Wireless connection issues

My laptop (Vista) seems to have trouble communicating with the Verizon FIOS wireless router. It connects to the internet, but often drops the connection randomly, and then reconnects. Sometimes it stays connected for 10 minutes at a time, sometimes it drops every 20 seconds.

When I plug directly into the router, the internet connection is fine. The laptop connects to other wireless networks without an issue. There are no wireless connection problems for any other computers in the house (Mac).

Does anyone have any possible suggestions for how to resolve this? Thanks so much!

How is the strength of the signal? Mine was dropping off sometimes, and I moved the wireless router to a more open space, and the signal was stronger. Are you going through floors of a house...might me distance and strength.

Hi, thanks for your response. The signal strength is always "excellent" or "good".

I experience this issue even when in the same room as the router (unless I plug in!). If I'm booted, it either automatically reconnects, or I click to reconnect. It always does connect again. The problem is that I'm having to reconnect constantly! There does not seem to be any interference from other equipment (phones, etc).

There is nothing wrong with your computer or Windows Vista. Its a FIOS/Actiontech Router issue that is still not resolved by Verizon for which they refuse to acknowledge the problem.

I'm having the same issue. I had FIOS installed on Saturday and my Mac worked fine while he was there. When I tried to log back on later in the day I received the message that I was not connected to the internet. I can connect to the internet only if I hook the cable to the router and my laptop. No success with wireless. I talked with Verizon tech support and was told that because I use Safari there would be problems and I needed to use internet explorer. When I called Mac support I was told that's not true and many Mac users were also Verizon internet customers. Any advice? Thanks.

It's known that mac's will sometimes "lose" the wep key for the network in the keychain. I'm not a mac user but I know of the issue happening from time to time. It has nothing to do with Safari or anything (sorry about that). You should only need to retype in the network key and you should be golden.

Thanks - but when I talked with tech support we ran through everything without success. Verizon shows a full connection with no problems but I still cannot achieve a wireless connection. Is there anything else I need to add to my airport? Thanks.

First, the vista/fios thing isn't a wireless issue, it's because vista has a program in it that automatically sets something in the computer that can be tweaked in xp. If you are having a problem keeping a connection, is your router near cordless phones/other wireless devices? How far away is the router from the laptop? longer distances work better if the wireless channel is set in the higher numbers, closer distances work better in the lower numbers. As far as the mac is concerned, when you go into your airport and click the network you want, click advanced. This should allow you to re-enter the wep key and it will ask if you want to save it to your keychain. say yes. Hope this helps.
