do i need replacement router and is it free??? Verizon FIOS

HI i have Verizon FIOS and i was wondering if i get a replacement router is it free? I think i need a replacement because im getting slow speeds i get 5Mbps and lower when i should be getting atleast 12Mbps or higher my current internet plan is 15Mbps down 5 Mbps up and im not getting my 15Mbps im on wireless But i should get atlest 13Mbps what is wrong with my router or my internet im using both firefox and internet explorer. Do i need a replacement router or something if so is it free? Thank you for your help.

Skyliner, I'm not with Verizon so I can't answer the part about their policies for router replacement. I do have some suggestions to offer about the problems you're having.

You say that you've got a 15/5 plan currently, but are only getting 5 Mbps downloads over your WiFi connection.

The first thing I'd do is take a laptop computer and plug it into the router and run a speed test that way. Make sure that no other network devices are connected, either wired or wireless. This will tell you more accurately what sort of download speeds the router is getting. If you're still at 5 Mbps, then I suggest that you contact FiOS tech support; I've always had very good experiences with them, and I've had FiOS broadband just about from its start.

I suspect, however, that you'll find that the downloads are closer to your 15 Mbps contract speed. I think you may find that the bottleneck might be your wireless connection.

First, you may be using a device that only has 802.11b support. Even though your router may be faster, the connection is only as fast as the slowest device, and many 802.11b devices are limited to 5 Mbps throughput or less. Even if you have a faster 802.11g or 802.11n device, there are many reasons that the speed can be degraded. The most important one is distance; performance falls off with the signal strength, so the further you are from the router (or the more walls and other objects in the way) the slower the performance will be.

Note also that 802.11b/g/n devices all work with the 2.4 GHz radio spectrum. This is used by other devices, and interference from these can also reduce throughput. Some of the other devices include microwave ovens, cordless telephones, baby monitors, Bluetooth devices, and wireless keyboards and mice.

It's not that difficult to run Cat 5 Ethernet cable. Your local home center (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) likely has everything you need including spools of cable, end connectors, and crimping tools. Using a wired network connection will give you best performance, and deliver the bandwidth provided by your subscription.

I am using a wireless G wifi device to connect to my router I am on a desktop my other desktop is on the network directly hooked up. For my wifi i am using SUPER-G Compatible 108Mbps Speed. RangeMax Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter WPN111. i seem to be getting my 12Mbps now but at times it keeps going up and down

Sounds like wireless interference, I would change the wireless signal. you can do that in the router. open a browser, and go to http://192.168.1.1

user name is admin. and the password is most likely the serial number found on the service tag of your VZ router unless you changed it. Once you login succesfully, go to the top and hit wireless, then on the left basic security. then go to option 3 which is channel

1, 6 and 11 and are the only channels you should try.

So it will likely be set to auto, change it to 11 and put the check for keep settings even after reboot (Directly under the channel) and then hit apply.,

after you hit apply, test your connection out, if you notice a difference, leave it like that until the problem happens again, and if it happens again, go back into the router, and try channel 6, test it out. and then finally 1 if the first two don't work.

You should always perform speed tests from a wired connection first. As others have said, there are many more factors that influnce your wireless speed. Once you have confirmed that everything is working correctly on a wired connection, then proceed to testing your wireless connections.
Have you run the FIOS optimizer?

The Actiontec router supports only standard 802.11g. It won't recognize the proprietary 108Mbps speed.

Correct on the 108mb Super-G -- that's a propriatary extension and won't be recognized by the Verizon router.

As other have said, you MUST plug into your router via an ethernet cable and turn off wireless when doing any performance testing. There are numerous factors which impact wifi performance and it is not uncommon to get substantially less thruput on a wireless connection -- it's coventient, but with that convenience comes numerous other performance related factors which have nothing to do with the router or the service provided by Verizon.
