email trouble - can't delete messages and won't go away after download

I hope someone can help me. Since yesterday, I have been receiving multiple copies of messages. Now I think I know the source of the problem, but do not know to fix it.

For background, I download my messages to my computer using Thunderbird. Up until recently, no problems with that - when I download, the messages are deleted from the server.

Well, today, it seems that the messages are not being deleted once I download them. To make matters worse, I am unable to delete the messages in the webmail interface! It gives me an error message "Warning We were unable to perform your request. Please try again." I have treid again, and again, and again, all to no avial. This is becoming a real problem as the messages are building up in the server - I get a lot of email.

#1 Tell your e-mail client not to save messages on the server.

#2 And make sure that no once has access to your e-mail client, so that they can change the setting.

Hi.. If your messages are not deleting off the webmail server try this. Delete a small number at a time. Trying to delete in large groups may hang the system up. One of my accounts on a Verizon server does this. I use one email for online shopping, forms etc. and it is my junk catch all which gets a lot of spam. I can only delete around 20 at a time or it errors on me as well.

If this doesn't resolve your problem you should call into tech support at 888-553-1555 option 2 and a ticket can be sent to the department that handles the email server so it can be investigated.

I also am getting duplicate messages even after I have deleted.I use Thunderbird and do not save on server after downloading. I went to my Verizon enail page and tried to delete the 2 messages I had on there and VZ says they do not exist yet I can view them.The messages pop up in Thunderbird at random and in multiples.

HI... it sounds like the email server is having issues. I would call tech support to have them create a ticket for it to be investigated.

I also have this problem. Using Thunderbird. No change to Thunderbird. Problem started 10/15 or 16. Only change is MS updates to XP for security. Suspect Verizon problem, but may have to do with MS updates. Every time my email goes to the server (every 5 minutes) I get a new copy of the emails until I remove them from the inbox. I have option set to not leave messages on server, and have set the Thunderbird option to not download duplicates. Hope we get a fix soon, this is getting to be a pain.

Ok, everyone - I called tech support, and they told me it is system wide problem, and my experience that it is getting worse is indicative of that. I am no longer able to see messages in my inbox via the webmail interface. Just logging in give me the error message that it is unable to do as I requested.

They are aware of the problem and are working on it.

Microsoft recently sent out an update that incorrectly set the system date/time to 2008. Check to make sure your system date and time are correct, as this may be the cause of the issue. (Your client checks for new mail, and is seeing everything since 2008 as new.)

HELP!!! Been having the same issue & its driving me nutz! The same emails keep coming in in droves! I have my account set to check for new messages every minute (I have since suspended my Veizon.net account) and the same set of 5 new messages keep coming in.

Currently using OE6 of which I thought that was the problem. Downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird and have the same issue (will be using that program as my default now when this gets fixed...much nicer than OE6) so it must be Verizons fault. Started yesterday.

Anyone have any fixes for it yet???

FIXED!!! Verizon did a remote desktop help & uninstalled my email account from OE6 & reinstalled it....problem solved (for me at least)

No more duplicate emails!

I am having the same problem here. We have two computers, one XP with Outlook (main acct. holder) that does not experience the problem. The second PC is Vista using windows mail which is experiencing the problem. This acct. is a secondary acct. I will have to call tech support to see why this is an issue.

I am having the same problem with my iphone access to my verizon mail. The same mail items have been repeatedly coming up. I even deleted the account on the iphone and reentered everything and rebooted it and the problem still persists. I have the option set to delete the mail on the server when I delete it from the inbox. The problem must be at the server end as all the parameters are correctly set and it was working correctly before Friday.

The date is displaying correctly, so this is not the problem. The fellow at Verizon Tech Support said it was a problem on their end whne I spoke to him last night. It persists today, but I am now able to delete the messages from the server by using the webmail interface. Last night I could not even do that. Here's hoping for it to be completely resolved soon!

my buddy in tech support just sent me a message saying that the duplicate email problem is a system wide problem.

Verizon is working on correcting it. It affects all 3rd party email programs.

He says they have a temp solution. go into your settings and set it to "leave a copy on server" and this is supposed to temporarily fix this issue. At least until Verizon resolves the problem on their end.

What is the definition of a "3rd party email program"? I just used Outlook Express to send an email from one of my Verizon accounts to another, then went into the webmail application and could see the email just fine, then went back to OE and downloaded the email (set to not leave a copy on the server), went back to webmail and the email is gone. So Verizon email is working exactly as it should for me. It does not appear to be a "system wide" problem, and if it was I think there would be way more posts here than there are.

Verizon has multiple email servers, my guess is only some of them are messed up, maybe only one. I know a couple of years ago I had a problem where my email account was known on some of Verizon's email servers but not others, people sending emails to me would sometimes get a bounce message, resend and it might go through, might not, very unpredictable. The solution for that was for Verizon to delete my email account and redefine it, all problems went away.

Anyway, I don't see any email problems, and haven't for months.

I set Thunderbird to leave on server, and it works intermittently. Sometimes it does not download the old messages, sometimes it does. And, unfortunately, I am back to where I was last night, and am no longer able to delete messages using the webmail interface. Sigh. At least I was able to delete 100 messages during the time it was working...

Again, I think it is just some Verizon email servers with problems, I just sent myself another test message and deleted it just fine using webmail. I think (but don't know) that it is pot luck which email server you talk to, maybe based on workload or something, which could explain why sometimes things work and other times they don't.

Verizon is saying this issue is resolved. Can anyone confirm?

After leaving our email up for a few hours today and over 1000 emails it finally removed the files from the server and back to normal for now.
