Having trouble setting up my own router

Hey everyone,

I found a forum on how to set up my own router and decided to go with releasing the DHCP Lease instead of unplugging my router overnight. So I logged in to my router and followed the steps to releasing the DHCP Lease. When I got to the releasing the lease step, I would click on Release and nothing would happen. I didn’t see the Apply button on the bottom page light up/clickable except for below the DHCP release button, there was an “expire” timer of 120 minutes. I waited an hour and it crapped itself and reset the timer back to 120. I clicked Release again and nothing happened so i decided to unplug the Ethernet and hook it up to my new router which isn’t giving me my full 980Mbps/980Mbps up/down speeds. Does anyone have any idea what I did wrong when I tried releasing the DHCP Lease? Or at least what was with the “expire” timer that didn’t even wanna hit 0? Sorry for the confusing explanation with no pictures but I can’t seem to load up my gateway page right now. I’ll try and upload a picture of what I’m talking about when I get the chance unless someone knows what I’m dealing with.

Thanks for taking the time reading!

You don't need to release leases anymore.  Simply unplug the Verizon router and plugin your desired router.  Verizon's system will figure it out.

A DHCP release used to be required, but Verizon got rid of that process many years ago.  The old articles keep getting re-posted by click bait sites.  Use forms like this to get accurate information.

As for speeds, try measuring using Verizon's speed test 1st.  It isn't impacted by external issues.  If it looks good, try fast.com, Netflix speed testing site.  It is well connected and provides accurate tests.  Be sure to do all your tests with Ethernet connected devices to eliminate WiFi issues.

Thank you so much for the reply! I did test out the speed with Ethernet and had 900+Mbps download with 800+Mbps upload. I had tested Wi-Fi speed too but had much lower speeds and thought I set it up wrong. The Wi-Fi connection does reach the  whole house now with the new router so I’m pretty happy with that! Now as for the router Verizon provided, I wanted to drop it off at the nearest store but I think I’ll just store it inside my closet for the time being. Or should I just return it since I’ll no longer be using it?

Again, I’d like to thank you gs0b! This helped as I kinda stressed about setting it up wrong.

Should I need assistance again, I’ll be sure to come back to the forums for any help. Take care and have a great weekend! 🙂
