Trouble with extender

I was given a Wi-Fi extender to help with slow internet speeds and am having issues setting it up. The router I’m attempting to connect to doesn’t use Coax because there isn’t a cable in the room it was set up. My room is on the other side of the apartment and does have a Coax available. When I plugged the extender into the room with the router the light wouldn’t turn yellow so I couldn’t sync. When I plugged into my room and Coax it turned yellow but I still can’t get them to sync. How do I remedy this?
