Verizon CR1000A router autopopulating device password???

Just got the CR1000A router from Verizon and I've been setting it up. I'd already changed the IoT network password and started adding those devices, and I was going to do for the regular network. As I was loading that page in the router settings, I went to my iPhone's wifi settings ands selected that network.

To my surprise, the password field was already populated with the default password--even though I'd never connected to it with my iPhone.

What's going on here? Is this something really clever, or does the router broadcast its default password to any device that wants to connect?

I changed the password, and that I had enter manually in order to connect.

Do you have the WPS activated?

Or, do you have the Verizon app on the phone?

I never pressed the WPS button on the router. I don't have the Verizon app--I'd used the old version, but when they sunsetted it for the new one, the new app wrecked voicemail retrieval (and Verizon never figured out how to fix it) so I deleted it as useless for me.
