no internet when using extension cord on box outside

I have a yellow box outside, 12v battery backup inside it and red/green lights etc. It is usually plugged into my wall, it also has a black large plug it plugs into first with a green and red light. When plugged into the wall the internet works fine. But when I plug the assembly into a powerstrip via a 1 foot extension cord, properly grounded, the internet stops working. Only local network. the green light on the plug is lit, everything seems normal, but it isn't. This is scary because now I know, during a power outage, verizon fios will be useless, no wifi, no internet, nothing. Can someone please help me understand, how a plug can tell the difference between being in the wall and being in an extension cord. The cord is properly rated for any load that box can give. The green light on the black plug is lit...so why not internet???
