I agree with you 1000 !!!
HD is great, but the SD is still dull and out of focus. My mother has Time Warner and a similar non-HD 36" Sony TV. Her SD picture quality blows mine away, even using the RF input rather than the s-video I that have her connected to the TW box.
I thought the 1.6.2 upgrade would fix this. I am very disappointed. This is FiOS, this is supposed to be BIG and BETTER!
It has been reported that the problems with the 7216 STB have been fixed with this latest update. The 7216 has always had superior SDPQ to that of the 6416 series.
I would suggest that if you are using a 6416 STB that you request a 7216 STB. The SD PQ on the 7216 is the best i have seen on an HDTV from any provider!
If you have a 7216 i suggest you go to your buddies house that has a HDTV and a different provider then FiOS and check out the SDPQ on their TV. I think you will agree that FiOS is better!
Then what am I supposed to do with all the recordings on my 6416 box including the HD ones?
One of the biggest issues with ALL cable systems is the lack of ability to transfer your recordings when a DVR box gets swapped out.
Good luck with that. My 6216 started freezing on Sunday night. Powercycled three times and it continued to freeze. Call Fios tech support, he tried to send a signal to reset the box, but the box would not respond. He said the box was probably going bad and asked how long I had it. I informed him I only had the box since July 2008, but it was obviously refurbished as the front display plate was on upside down. He said they would drop ship me a new one. Sounded good to me.
Got the "new" box yesterday. Excited thinking they might have sent me a new 7000 series, I find a standard def non-dvr 2500 model. Called support again thinking I could just drop it in the mail and get the right box. NOPE, they have to send a tech due to their error. I told them I'd have to get back with them on it. At that point I was going to pay the cancellation fees and go back to DirecTV. Realized my wife was going to be home the next day anyway, so figured I would just get their tech out to fix their mistake. Called tech support again and the agent told me they could just drop ship the correct box. Now I'm irritated that Verizon can't even get their support team on the same page. Whatever-I asked him if he could send me the "7000" series box. I'm told "I can't do that, that's a billing issue, you will get the same 6216 you have." How is this a billing issue? Does the 7216 cost more each month than what I pay? So I guess I'm getting another refurbished 6216. Sorry this was a long drawn out explanation about how I couldn't simply ask to be upgraded to the new box. If anyone else has more success please post as to how you were able to do it.

ok here's the deal...When we dropship a box it will be equal to what you have had. Now I have seen it where customers get a 6416 in place of a 7216. Its also 10000000000% not a billing issue as billing can't write an order for you to get a 7200 or 7216 box it just doesn't work that way. If we send you out the wrong box its always best we send someone out to correct that error rather than put the burdon on the customer to return the boxes.
I hope this helps clear that up for you BigP

What stinks is if the 7000 series box gives a good SD picture and the 6416 like I have now does not. It will not be fixed with 1.6.2, why should I not be entitled to the box that fixes what the software doesn't?
I am sure that is the whole question. I want the newer box if mine will not give me the best posible picture that I am paying for. Not to be negative but asking what everyone will want to know.
If a person is lucky enough to walk into a Verizon FIOS store, will they not be able to get the newer box?
1.6.0 has been working great for me. If 1.6.2 is not going to do anything for the 6416 then don't screw with something that works for me. I wonder what is going to break on the 31st.
I am still at 1.6.0 in VHO4. This post is VERY disappointing. I was looking forward to the 1.6.2 update just to get a decent PQ on the SD channels. Based on the razor sharp ads from a year ago, I thought Verizon would be capable of providing decent video on an SD channel with the HD STB they gave me. Comcast could. Verizon seems to be incapable of doing so. About a year ago I got FIOS. I had several service calls. One was on 4/21/2008, ticket number MDDQ020BB8. The tech acknowledged there was an issue and there would “probably” be a firmware update “sometime soon” to improve the SD PQ. I even brought the SD 2500 STB up from the clubroom and showed him how much better the PQ was on SD channels. He said it was obvious. I showed him the difference on both live SD channels and SD VOD. For almost a year I’ve put up with this.
I am so angry. I pay over $200 monthly. I would think FIOS was the greatest if I could enjoy BBCA, Comedy Central, Weather Scan, and other SD channels as I did with Comcast on my Panasonic Plasma. I especially miss good quality SD VOD (e.g. HBO VOD is not available in HD). FIOS, you do a great job with HD. If you watch any SD content however, forget about it.
I feel your pain J-Scott.
FiOS's HD can't be beat, but as much as I hate Cablevision, they at least supplied a half decent SD picture.
matcart, it DIDN'T work for me.
HI JUST TALKED TO TECH SUPPORT LAST NIGHT AFTER RECEIVING 1.6.2 UPDATEE WITH NO IMPROVEMENT ON STD CHANNELS . THEY HINTED IT COULD BE PROBLEM WITH MY SONY BRAVIA NO WAY>I HAVE IT CONFIGURED TO SETTINGS RECOMENDED BY SONY SUPPORT HD IS GREAT SD SUCKS BOTTOM LINE IS VERIZON IS COMING THIS WEEKEND TO SWAP MY 6416 FOR 7216 ALSO THEY SAID SD COULD BE BETTER USING COMPOSITE WIRE INSTEAD OF HDMI ANYBODY HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON USING COMPOSITE WIRE INSTEAD OF HDMI ?
Jetpeak,
I just got my update also. Pretty much no improvement in SD quality as you and many others have observed. I am using an HDMI hookup, but I'd be surprised if using component helps. The reason I say that is that when I had comcast, I used both HDMI and component and PQ was the same (excellent). I may experiment, but bottom line is that I now don't have a spare component hookup on my TV and it shouldn't make a difference anyway. I can't believe Verizon couldn't get this right. My question to you: what did you say to Verizon that made them willing to come and switch boxes for you? My impression from other comments in this forum was that unless your box was broken, they wouldn't replace it. Maybe we can just define "broken" as lousy SD PQ.
Hi Larry when i talked to tech support this week i told them i had this problem sinse last october after upgrade to hd 6416 stb
i reported it then and it was suggested to wait for 1.6.1 fix which never happened as i said in last post i did receive 1.6.2 which has no fix the tech had me changing wires to try different hookups tried running coax directly from wall to tv no go
then he did a diagnostic through box he said that box seemed ok .thats when i mentioned fios forumns telling him that this issue is a nation wide problem and if it doesnt get resolved i will be switching back to cox cable he then said well try a 7216 box which im scheduled to get this saturday. he also said some tv,s have had issue with handshake protocol. which i dont accept at least not with my sony bravia sony tech support reaffirmed that my tv was not the problem. it all comes down to how good a signal tv is receiving from verizon so thats where im at now ill find out this sat. and will report to forumn how i make out .
thanks jetpeak
I live in Staten Island, NY and I just wanted to report that I am very happy with the 1.6.2 fix. I was concerned that the "HUB" error would never be resolved. After watching many shows in my bedroom I can say that the problem no longer exsists. Just resolving that problem is a huge upgrade in my eyes. Another thing I did notice on my HD set in my main room was that the SD ch's have improved a great deal. The SD ch's always were pretty good on my garbage sets, but on my HD tv they were very blurry. Now I noticed a sharper detail to all the Sd ch's. I still don't watch them....HD is all I am worried about. Thanks Verizon.
NOW PLEASE WORK ON THE GUIDE!!

We got the update at 2:30am this morning. When it was done it left me with audio and no video on two STB's. Now if only I can get a discount since I am only receiving the audio.
Hello, everyone! I often check out this forum as a resource, but this is my first post here...
We got the 1.6.2 update here in the LA area this morning. Most of our TV's (including HD ones) are working well with the update.... except for the one that counts most: The Family Room.
It gives an error message of "HDMI audio unavailable" - and of course, now has NO sound. I checked the HDMI connections, shut off power to everything for 30 seconds & turned back on, and still.... no sound since updating to 1.6.2.
It's an HP 50-inch 720p/1080i plasma, by the way. The STP is a Fios HD/DVR 6416-2. Any ideas?
WheninRome... no idea.
I have a 6416-2 DVR hooked up to a Sony 55" rear-projection LCD HDTV via HDMI. No issues with audio with latest 1.6.2 firmware.
I wish we would get a warning when an new build was coming. Just got mine (build 08.58) and I thought my recievers were fried for 30 minutes. First an error code that looked like E609. Then a DL or D1 with a running cursor. Finally an FP appeared. I reset the router twice and eventually reset.
Even now, there is no timestamp in the System Information to validate the build was actually the issue.
