FIOS DVR frequently fails to record for unknown reasons

I'm really not a dumb person, but you wouldn't know it based on the consistent dumb problems I keep having with our FIOS DVR. We're away most Sundays, so I program it to record football games. About half the time, it doesn't record. We get home, turn on the TV, search for recorded programs and...nothing is there. I'm stumped.

At least once when this happened, we called Verizon's tech support and they said something like, "Oh yeah, we had to reset your box. I guess that deleted everything in your queue." (Alert readers may note the omission of the phrase, "we're sorry" from that sentence.) Generally, though, we just can't tell what happened -- the games simply aren't there.

Tonight I decided to doublecheck that the games I already set to record this coming Sunday are still in the queue. Two of them were, but one of them -- the one we really, really want to see -- had a little yellow "!" icon next to it. I have no idea what that means, but when I selected the game, I got the option to "re-record." Um, well, yeah, DUH -- of course I want to record it, that's why it was in the queue to begin with.

I don't trust that we'll get home on Sunday night and find the games there...we're getting very frustrated that the money we're spending for this system seems to be going to waste. Does anybody have any thoughts on what might be going wrong?

That little yellow triangle icon means that the DVR detected a conflict in your scheduled recordings or a recording was "bumped due to deletion".

In the first case either there was an overlap with the other 2 recordings or something was causing the DVR to think that it should try to record 3 things (or more) at once - maximum of 2 simultaneous recordings allowed.

In the second case, it is possible the guide data changed and the program is no longer listed - remember that the DVR is a program based system, not time slot, and Verizon's guide tends to be wrong a lot.

One way to assure your recordings is to set them up as recurring manual recordings as opposed to a specific show.

I was having the same exact problem and it seemed to be very random. My stb was not full or any where close, there was no conflicts that I could find. I called numerous times and they only did the "hard reset" I finally got someone on the third or fourth call and he did a different reset where he re-initialized my card in the stb this so far has resolved the problem at least the shows I had set last night recorded. I will know tomorrow if it is working. I have checked my schedule and so far no yellow triangle ! symbols.

It looks like I'm not the only one having these problems with Verizon's DVRs. If you're out there reading this trying to decide whether to order or not don't do it unless you like missing your favorite tv shows and sporting events.
