Removing OAN and AWE is a mistake for Verizon

Are we really back to removing what we don't agree with? As an adult in life we learn to avoid things we don't like or agree with. It's like telling the child that has an issue with sharing a toy that they should just smash it as a way to solve their issues with sharing! In my opinion it would be a huge mistake for Verizon to remove OAN. When I see that you're thinking of removing AWE (also owned by Herring networks) i have to believe it's an attack on Larry Herring and that is just wrong!

I cancelled My subscription with Spectrum after 30 years and joined Verizon after Me and many other subscribers wanted OANN added to their packages but They refused. The ratings on OANN is outstanding not so on CNN & MSNBC. those cable companies ratings are very low that's probably one reason CNN is bringing in New Leadership and firing some of the Staff.

You need to re-read the STB message more carefully. Verizon wants to charge for OAN and AWE and offer it as a premium channel. It is OAN's parent company that is balking at this. Blame OAN's owners, not Verizon for any possible removal. It's a business decision, plain and simple.

I think those on OAN's side just doesn't want to pay for these channels.

Please disregard My recent email. I spoke to Verizon and was told the message I got was a mistake and They are Re-negotiating There Contract with OANN. The message that was sent to Me was in My opinion deliberate stating the reason for the cancellation was because OANN reports Fake News without Fact Checking. The Verizon Rep. I spoke to said that wasn't true because They have no input as to whether News is Fake or not. when I called Verizon the T.V message in My message box had mysteriously disappeared but I assured The Verizon Rep. I was truthful and that Verizon should check Their Logs to find out who sent the Bogus Message.

Agree. OAN does investigative journalism. In my opinion, the "corporate media"- in general- reads press releases of those with whom they agree and interviews in small sound bites. OAN does independent reporting and long and substantive interviews. If you do not like OAN, do not watch/block it, if you like.

One America News (OAN) does a great job of presenting the facts on both sides of an issue and providing a more balanced view for the viewers. I prefer watching their news instead of the mass media stations (which tend to be biased) and often present a one-sided perspective in an attempt to brainwash the American public to their way of thinking. Please do not remove OAN from Verizon Fios.

There are many customers who want to hear both perspectives in order to find the truth which is usually in the middle. Removing one side of a story only serves to increase ignorance and audience manipulation. The good news is that most folks already know this and will just move to other venues to get a full perspective. If Verizon is not willing to fill that need, then opportunity will be knocking and someone will answer.

As a long time customer of Verizon Fios, I’m very disappointed that OAN and AWE are scheduled to be removed.

These outlets provide valuable entertainment that I will sorely miss. The cost I now pay Verizon is very high and will now likely cause me to cancel my service.

I dropped Comcast to subscribe to Fios for the very reason that Verizon carried OANN, Newsmax and FOX so that I could get a balanced view on social/news issues.

I am a news junkie. Meaning, I watch more news than is healthy for any one person to watch. I enjoy getting my news from all sources, then deciding what to think for myself. So when I saw that Verizon is thinking of making one of my regular news sources a premium channel, it’s making me rethink just how much I really need to keep paying for my junk-channel packed package. After all, I am currently paying for the Extreme package plus the non-voluntary added sports fees, plus 3 streaming services. So I decided to look through my channel line-up to see what I actually watch. I was VERY surprised with my findings.

Including SD and HD channels separately, we get just shy of 400 channels total. Of these, we watch approximately ¼ of them regularly, and 2/3 of them NEVER. So how about instead of cutting my news sources, I trade you most of my sports channels, kid’s channels, music channels, shopping channels, women’s channels, cooking channels, and Spanish-language channels, and I keep all of the news channels?

Yes, I know that for $20 less per month, Verizon can pick my channel line-up for me. But back when “Your Fios TV” was known as “a la carte” that meant picking from 7 channel packages that always excluded channels we really like, or pay more than I’m paying now to keep them. Since now they won’t even tell you which channels are included till you go to checkout, I’d wager things haven’t changed.

Everyone has a right to watch or not watch. That's how this should work - Fewer viewers means Verizon drops the channel period. - Free speech hurts feelings and gets folks mad at times but our individual goal should not be to try and punish the other side because their opinion is different from ours. Rather exercise our rights by not watching.

Take a more silent approach, lower your blood pressure, and let's hope that Charma does not turn your negative thoughts back onto you for trying to punish others for what you do not like. It reflects poorly on your ability to manage you're out of control behavior and it may just save your life.

I called Verizon, not even a week ago, and the rep. I spoke with had no idea about the removal of OAN. She put me on hold to look into my claim. When she came back she told me she saw nothing about removing OAN from the line up. Now today it is confirmed they don't want far right news. If they can carry CNN and MSNBC, who are minions of the left and their ratings are low and dropping, why can't they carry a conservative REAL news station. Verizon subscribers aren't just the leftists. It is censorship! We are not paying to be censored. This is not a free social media site with the thought police silencing conservative thought. We are paying Verizon to watch what we want not what they want for us. Fox and Newsmax are not comparable to the real news on OAN.

Third time writing this??

I received an email today from Verizon stating they are dropping these two channels as of 7/31/22. I spoke with a Verizon agent today and he said that Verizon and OANN’s parent company are still negotiating. The email stated that the parent company of OANN isn’t willing to work out a deal with Verizon. OANN on the other hand, stated that they are even willing to reduce their fee to Verizon so the channels can remain on Verizon’s lineup. So who’s telling the truth? Why would Verizon want to drop these two channels after they have been on Verizon’s lineup for over 10 years? Over the past year, Verizon dropped channels from my lineup (AHC, Science just to name two) and yet my bill continues to increase. There’s been more channels removed and now we are probably going to lose two more. Dropping OAN and AWE would be a big mistake. I just hope that what the agent told me on the phone today is still true, that they are still negotiating.

I agree! If I can't watch a channel I like, and I find CNN and MSNBC offensive for their fake news reporting, cancel them also. Sound crazy? Bring back OAN and AWE and people can just not watch channels they don't like. I am also thinking about getting rid of Verizon now and going elsewhere when my contract is up. My bill keeps going higher and I am losing channels I watch all the time. Either bring them back, give me a reasonable discount every month or let me pick two channels I want that I don't have!

I agree. Cutting out OAN just makes my tv line up even more overpriced. $200/month for the 6(now 5) channels I watch would go along way toward purchasing streaming services. I do NOT want my news curated. I watch CNN, MSNBC, FOX, OAN, etc. I want the freedon to make up my own mind and not have news censored. Every side deserves to be heard in a democracy. What, exactly, was it that you couldn’t accept that resulted in you being “unable to reach an agreement to continue carrying One America News (OAN) and A Wealth of Entertainment (AWE) owned by Herring Networks after our current agreement expires on July 30, 2022. Effective July 31, 2022, we will no longer have the rights to provide this programming, and it will be removed from the Fios TV lineup.”

OAN's Pearson Sharp says that Verizon is capitulating to the FCC's Congressional Oversight Committee [DNC controlled] who want the cable carriers to ban ALL conservative news outlets. FCC's charter says it should assure that there's a full spectrum of views on TV but, with the current regime, the FCC's funding is in jeopardy unless they look the other way [just like the DOJ/FBI].

On the other hand, Robert Herring [OANN CEO] may be using this contract deadline [7/30/22] as an opportunity to move to the "pay-per-view" arena [like Paramount+, Disney+, HuLu, etc.] since OANN can now be streamed live for a $5/mo. subscription.

I don't think we'll ever get a straight answer from either party.

I have been a Verizon customer since 1979. My Fios bill is over $200.00 with hundreds of cable channels to watch. But, I normally just watch news channels including OAN and MSNBC. Verizon needs to step up and make a deal with OAN. Do you (Verizon) treat MSNBC the same as OAN?

We should never be afraid to hear another person's opinion because we prize the freedom of everyone. Verizon has been bullied to get rid of OAN (just as AT&T was bullied to drop it from Dish a few months ago) and they have capitulated. It's sad. I called Verizon yesterday after I got the email about OAN and two separate people acted like they had no idea what happened. I felt they were being dishonest, which made me even more disappointed in Verizon. I never believed something like this would happen in the USA and it's scary. My only hope is that this culture of bullying and cancelling will soon fizzle out because people are truly getting sick of it. I haven't seen much of that on OAN, but certainly have on other channels that are not being canceled. But I would never ask for those channels to be canceled. I know there are people that are commenting on why OAN and newsmax are both removed from the Fios network line up.

It is gotten to a point here in the USA that there is almost no choice anymore.

I consider myself a well-rounded educated individual.

I've always tried to look at both sides of an issue and draw a conclusion regardless of which political affiliation I consider myself.

From what I've discovered Verizon did not want to make the deal to continue carrying OAN even knowing they had an offer of one fifth of what they were being charged.

But yet we are still allowed to see what some folks consider left wing such as MSN, ABC, CBS, NBC and at times this also includes Fox News.

Some of the folks that had made posts about this or replied to comments has said that OAN had help perpetuate telling people to pick up arms which they did not, and that they help to create what was considered an insurrection and the list goes on and on.

They need to let news media, social media, printed media, digital media continue in if individuals do not like what they are printing / broadcasting then they should change the station cancel the subscription or whatever the case may be.

There are falsehoods on both sides of whichever political affiliation that somebody would consider themselves why not let the individual make up their own mind with what they read or see.

Everyday I try to look at both sides and different angles on discussion / arguments. There are TV shows that I would consider so far left that it's not even funny One of them is the view. But you don't see nobody complaining about them.

Too many people look through what I would consider a peephole instead of opening their eyes and doing their own investigation their own research and come to their own conclusion.

Everybody's entitled to free speech free, assembly and every other constitutional right that as a citizen we have in this country and too much is already been given up already. People need to start helping one another and investing in one another and stop giving in to the small percentage of people that are trying to destroy everything that everyday individuals have grown to know and love.

It's unfortunate too much is driven by the Almighty dollar, dividends and for the shareholders.

Right now today there is not one single 100% factual News Network in the world they all twist they all put in their own opinions or maybe their own viewpoints. Just as I was brought up you take everything with a grain of salt.

I even made the same points in my own post, it is getting very scary and yes they are being bullied OAN isn't the issue.

I also made comments about how people pile on saying that those news networks are passing misinformation disinformation in any other ism that they can think of.

This is either coming from pressure from the CEO, possibly the investors.

Two networks that do put a little bit of their own opinion in but not too much cuz it's kind of hard for an anchor to not put in an opinion in. But I have watched OAN and newsmax and when they make a news article and I go and check and verify the information that they're broadcasting to everyone and it is factual.

I can't say the same thing about a lot of the other news networks.

People have to be open-minded they have to also do their own research and don't rely on just a review or one write up at one website and take it as truth.

Verizon is longer carrying OAN and AWE for the same reason that they had dropped The Weather Channel a few years ago. They can't come to a commercial agreement.
No one claimed liberal bias when TWC was removed.
In the end, we don't know what the contract costs are. So we can't say if Verizon was willing to pay too little or Herring wanted to charge too much.

According to the Verizon message I just received, Verizon is dropping OAN because they couldn't come to a new contract agreement. According to OAN, Verizon failed to negotiate in good faith and walked out on the negotiations after OAN offered to PAY Verizon to stay on the air. Once again, big media is silencing free speech by cancelling OAN. So if I pay for OAN streaming service is Verizon going to block there streaming service also? And since Verizon is taking off all AWE stations, do we get a discount? NEVER!!

OAN is not a news station. It is an extreme right wing advertising channel. One of the few channels that I regularly tune into is being discontinued. I hope they reach an agreement to continue. It's good content for me and a welcome relief to all the dross on so many of the channels.

I would have to disagree completely.

Way back before I started watching OAN and other news stations. I tried watching it and before I condemned/ disagree with what they were casting and guess what after I did my own research, and not just snippet etc.

I checked many other news right up's and this also included are own fed gov web sites or different agencies are they were 100% on the money. I used to only watch the standard ABC, CBS etc and found out how much they left out or never bothered to cover at all.

Unfortunately all news anchor do put there own opinion etc in and I think that is hard not too.

You would be amazed how much and how 1 sided almost the rest of the news outlets lie on, missing facts and use just a snip on a clip etc.

Would I be willing to pay a reasonable premium price to keep OAN on Verizon? Only if Verizon does not get to keep a single penny of it. They are already taking too much of my money. Bad behavior should not be rewarded.

Would I move to a DVR capable competitor if they carried OAN and religious channel 3ABN? Yup.

Verizon knows their competitors aren’t carrying OAN. So they can put the screws to Herring, knowing that their customers can’t just jump over to a competitor.

While I would gladly pay the price for OAN Live, LIVE is not how I watch TV. I watch EVERYTHING through DVR and On Demand streaming. I leave my DVR tuned to the news channels I watch. Then I can back up the hour, and skim through to watch just the stories I want to learn more about. Or I record them to watch later.

OAN is just now gearing up to do On Demand. But as far as I know, they will not have the ability to host the last hour of coverage online to be watched/skimmed at will. Or the ability to record and keep particular stories to show others later, before new news drops and that story gets lost from the lineup. This is where DVR is superior.

So the real question remains: Is Verizon playing hardball and really trying to get the best bang for the buck for their customers, or has Verizon already done the math and figured the number of customers that will actually dump them is an acceptable loss?

The one thing we can all be sure of is that the timing of this issue has absolutely nothing to do with the way One America would be covering the elections this fall.

What if OAN proves to be right about Trump, vaccines, and trans-gender issues, not to mention CRT. A backlash is coming, and where will Verizon be but on the wrong side of history and with many irate customers. Verizon should look to the future remembering that millions of Americans voted for Mr. Trump. This Fall semester, I will confront my university students with the subject of censorship in the media. The press and cable providers will be the semester’s focus. But regarding OANN, this statement was released by Verizon. “… These negotiations were focused on economics, as they always are, but OAN failed to agree to fair terms," Verizon said in a statement provided to Ars last night.“

If Robert Herring offered both OANN and AWE for free, where is the lack of “fair terms”? It appears that Robert Herring was very generous, and Verizon was going to drop them no matter what. Verizon could clarify this if they wanted to, rather than putting out a canned statement.

Long time verizon customer. Fed up with Verizon removing channels I watch, adding low quality content channels and keeping channels I don't watch. I want choice of channels. Will be dropping Fios TV.

I agree, if they cancel OAN but not low performing stations like CNN, its done for political reasons (censorship).

Maybe we ought to leave Fios behind too.
