So I got the messages on my Verizon Home page that I needed to exchange / updatge my STBs, two of them. It took numerous hours (about 6) to get through to the correct department and today I finally did the exchange.
DO NOT DO THIS !! The new boxes do not show current channel and I do miss the clock. BUT the biggest issue is surely the unreadability of the Guide.
I see from reading older messages that Verizon has allegedly been working on this for about 3 years now. Well, if I did my job that poorly....would I still have a job? NO !
So perhaps we should all ditch this disappointing company. I'm looking. Charter looks better and better.

It sounds like you've been upgraded to the 7XXX STBs. Are you using SD or HD TVs? With the 7XXX STBs, if properly set when using an HD TV, you should be seeing an HD version of the guide (versus the 6XXX STBs which display the guide in SD only even on HD TVs) which will be clearer than an SD version on an HD TV. You might check your STB settings for TV type, size and resolution. (The fonts are actually the same size since the same version of the guide sofware deployed in late 2011, within 1 pixel, and the HD version of the guide is a full 16x9 width on an HD TV, so it should look better.)
FYI you could have done the exchange via the STB itself. There is a menu item under the support area that takes about a minute to do. Others have been successful using this process. It's a shame Verizon didn't tell you about this easy way to do the upgrade.
As a last comment, my neighbors have Charter, and when we were at their house for an Oscar's viewing party it was painful to watch due to the poor HD quality. They have top of the line equipement and the HD picture was so bad I checked all of their settings because i thought they were wrong -- and they were correct.
