Unable to use Hauppauge HVR-1600 in PC to record TV shows

I'm not sure who this will go to, hopefully someone at Verizon who can shed some light on this.

I ordered the FIOS equipment (HS set-top boxes, etc.) and scheduled an installation for Thursday the 10th of March. Everything went well until we got to the signal to be fed to my Hauppauge HVR card in the PC. Between me and the installer we couldn't get the signal from the STB to work with Windows (7) Media Center. In the setup procedure it seemed to work fine up until it got to the part where it asks me to change the channel with the remote. When I checked the box that said Yes, the channel changed correctly, it then showed anothe clickbox window that says "Enter another channel', or something very similar. So I get locked in this loop and never get to finish the setup. I can't find anything that will step me through the setup and I'm not even sure I should be trying to get a STB to work in this application. I'm an EE but I don't work with this kind of equipment so I might as well be a DD, I've tried to outsmart the HVR but I really don't know if the signal from the STB is digital or analog and I can't find anything that will tell me.

So am I headed in the right direction or should I reverse engines?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have this PC tuner card. The only input useable from the STB is the component SD video signal. The card can tune to CLEAR QAM channels that are on the FiOS coax (mostly locals in SD and HD). Most "national" channels are encrypted and since this card does not have a cable-card capability, it will not decrypt them.

I used the WinTV program that came with the Hauppauge card to set it up (to scan for the clear QAM channels). I then successfully set up the clear QAM channels in Windows Media Center.
