YES Network SCAM!

I woke up yesterday morning - started crusing through the sports channels .... MUCH MUCH MUCH to my surprise I find the YES network.

OMG - Is someone screwing with me ? Or could this really be ? YES YES YES (literally) - its here. I am watching the Joe Girardi show, how awesome is this ? (this is starting off to be a great day!)

All day, I am so psyched, telling all my co-workers how they really have to switch over from COM-CRAP to fios, they have the YES Network now....., the internet is faster and more reliable, the service is cheaper and much better technology in general, why wouldnt you switch over.

I get home, all set to watch the Yanks vs the A's.... - what what what the hell ? I cant find the game ... Whats going on ? (ok maybe its on ESPN or Nationally Broadcast... NO)

What the hell ? Frantically searching the internet/google FIOS and YES and yup - I found what I was dreading - a F'ing press release from YES talking about nationally broadcasting YES to FIOS Customers - EXCEPT FOR THE GAMES!

The day turned out to be one of the worst... I know some of you out there like the additional programming that comes on the YES network, but for me, I feel like someone just took the jelly out of my donut.

Sorry all - I cant afford the $200 bucks for MLB EI, and plus most of the games are in Extra Low Def (thats what SD programming looks like on my HDTV)

FIOS / YES - please please please - work out a deal to get the Yankees games on the YES Network! I need some good news.

While I guess I am not quite as disappointed as you, yep, I was glad to find I had the YES network, quickly added it to my Favorites. Then I found out that apparently they do not show any games on the channel outside the NY/NJ area. So just as quickly I removed that channel from my Favorites, and I doubt I will watch it again. Unless.......

I too hope that sometime in the near future Verizon and the YES network can get together to show the Yankee games here in Texas, if only because I would love to be able to watch them lose Smiley Very Happy

To all - whatever reason you would like to watch the games, because you love, because you hate, because you just love baseball, or because you think its total crap the YES network is available without actual games....

call your local fios rep

write your local verizon office

call your congress-person

let them know, - YES Network needs the actual games!

If anything, contact MLB. They have the contract's setup with the channel providers.

Charles is correct MLB would not let one team give out their games free when all other out of town fans have to pay for the extra innings package. Direc TV has sports channels from all over the country that show games for their local teams but get blacked out because MLB will not allow them to be shown without paying for the package.

Then what was the point of adding the channel? When they don't have games on, it's all just filler or ESPNews simulcast. Great so I get ESPNews on it's regular channel, and on Masn and YES. 3 at once. Adding YES was a complete waste outside of the NY/NJ area.

I personally tend to agree with the last post... - the channel is pretty useless to me if the games are not on. I know some people enjoy getting the Joe Girardi show, and being able to watch batting practice, but I have seen pretty much all of the Yankeeography and the rest of the filler. Batting practice might be ok to see A-Rod back in action - its cool, but again - I feel like I just go duped.

I dont think I will be watching the channel at all - another / different sports channel would have probably been the better way to go.

My guess is that this is the first step of the Yankees working with MLB to come up with their own package - since the YES network is now being broacast nationally, it wouldnt take that much for them to be able to turn on the games / turn it into a paid package.

Although I am sure MLB, IN-Demand, and all of the other players who have rights to other specific time slots (like the Saturday afternoon, and Sunday evening games will have a fit it that what the Yankees try to do)

I could not agree with JAMIEVA more!!!!!!!!! If the Yankee games are blacked out then adding the YES network is pointless and a waste of an HD channel slot. Smiley Mad

this is a pretty dumb move by verizon, just take off the channel if you are not showing the games, the whole point in having it would be to see the games!

I have to agree with the rest of the forum - this is a waste of a channel slot. Who could possibly care about such a ridiculous channel? Can't they find something better than this? Say NO to YES !!!!

I registered for these forums just to reply to this thread. I had the same EXACT reaction as the OP. IF MLB Extra Innings was HD I would gladly pay the $200 for the package but WHO watches sports in STANDARD definition anymore. It's not even watchable! Even the garbage MLB Premium has a better picture! They REALLY need to get their acts together on this as the anger in this thread exemplifies. YES network without the actual games is beyond moronic. It's OFFENSIVE! Man Mad

Yes no YES would make me happy. Without the Yankees games what is the point? I say put the NASA channel in this slot. Then again I am from the DC area.

1) Once I heard the VZ signed with inDemand for their sports packages, I chose not to subscribe to Center Ice. I knew, from my days with TWC, that inDemand only provided ONE channel for HD games. Hockey may be worse than baeball when watching in SD. I wish VZ could offer the HD sports that D* does. Set up the equipment, and then sign contracts directly with the leagues. I would pay an extra $100 to watch ALL of the NHL games in HD.

2) Verizon has no say in whether or not the games are on Yes HD nationwide. That is MLB, and their golrious policies to protect the local broadcasters and revenues. However, VZ's decision to carry Yes HD natiowide is puzzling. Was there a large request for pre/post game and Mike Francesa outside of the northeast?

I went thru this 2 years ago when I had comcast. Got the MLB package to watch the Yanks. All in SD. What a waste. When I saw Verizon was adding YES, I figured the games would not be on, I live in lower Bucks CO, PA 8 miles from the border of New Jersey ( Mercer County ) where they get both YES and the Yanks and the phillies. I only get the phillies ( no thanks) want to watch a real major league baseball team.

The Yankee games are not allowed to be shown on YES network outside the MLB set team borders. The only network that has the ablility to bypass this rule is WGN with the Cubs and White Sox coverage because they had the national rights prior to the set up MLB extra inns package. TBS lost its national rights to show Braves' games when it moved the games to Turner South (Now Peachtree network). This is how MLB set up the show. No Telco/Cable/Sat can show the YES coverage of Yankee games outside the Geographical area.

I don't care about licensing and who's allowed to show games and whatever. All that matters is that Verizon customers wanted YES network for the Yanks games and Verizon slapped their customers in the face by getting YES without games. I feel like they think I'm an idiot. Did they really think this would satisfy me? I'm not satisfied. (And off topic-I have Verizon wireless as well and this isn't the first time they've done this sort of thing). Verizon, get it together. Start providing the customers with what they want. Stop treating people like morons.

... wow ... Honestly, if you don't want the YES channel because they don't show the games, then don't watch it. If you like the programming other than the games and want to watch it, then enjoy. Either way, someone will be disspointed.

There are some who just want games, and some who like the programming. Either way, VZW will upset people by either adding the channel, or removing the channel.

It's an extra channel, VZW has nothing to do with the fact that there are no games broadcast on the channel. It's an MLB contract. If you live outside the NY/NJ area, you have to pay to watch the games. That goes for everyone, not just FiOS customers.

My recomendation, get some friends, neighbors that all love or hate the Yankees, find the guy with the best TV, and all of you chip in for the games, have game parties at their house, and enjoy.

Other than that, there really isn't anything that can be done. But either way, VZW will upset people no matter what they do.

So this became relevant again since YES network is showing the games online, but for Cablevision subscribers in market. My question is this, why is it Verizon's fault? Everyone should be **bleep** at the MLB. They are the most controlling sport out there of the major 3. They basically make it impossible to see a game without paying for their package if you are out of market. And their package isn't all in HD like the NFL's is. Not everyone with YES is a Yankee fan. In fact, Yankee fans would be a minority there. So while YOUR personal reasons for wanting the channel might not make it worthwhile for YOU, that doesn't change it for the majority.

If you expected to see games on the channel out of market, you haven't been paying attention to how the MLB operates. No free rides without jumping through hoops. Get their online package with a bunch of friends, or even 3 or 4 would be my suggestion. It still allows multiple simultaneous logins.

Nope, because I have WGN, but don't see Cubs games other than when they are national on Fox or ESPN, or playing a local team. (Phillies, Orioles or Nationals) It's the same as any other network. Games are blacked unless you are in the local market.

No that's not accurate either. There is a select number of Cubs games broadcast on WGN America which is the version of WGN that those outside Chicago get. It is drastically lower then what they used to show. WGN used to show all 162 games except for the national games on ESPN or Fox.

But WGN is not a regional sports network, they are not bound to blackout restrictions like YES is.

Like you, I joined forums just to respond to this thread and try to get a clear picture of what's going on. (I could not get a straight answer when I called to sign up for FIOS service.) I'm a long-time customer of a competitive service (which, interestingly, is also offered by Verizon...), but am seriously considering switching to FIOS for a few reasons, mostly financial. I am a lifelong baseball fan from NY who hasn't lived in the area for 25 years. So, the ability to get Yankee games (now in high-def) is a key factor for me -- it's the main reason I signed up for satellite over cable in the first place. Under my current package (I pay for MLB EI), I get every Yankee game on YES in HD, unless: 1) the game is on during one of the Fox or ESPN exclusive slots; 2) the Yankees are playing one of the local teams (O's or Nationals); or 3) the game is on My 9 -- in which case I can still see it in HD on one of the many channels dedicated to MLB games in HD.

From this thread, it seems pretty clear that my access to Yankee games will be much more limited, even if I sign up for Extra Innings (again). Even worse, I won't be able to see the games on YES and many (if not most) of those games will not be in HD unless they are on ESPN or Fox... Is that correct??? If so, how can that be??? Why is there only one channel dedicated to HD games on FIOS??? (What's the point of that???) I understand that MLB controls content on out-of-market channels, but why am I able to get so many Yankee games in high def under my current subscription with the competition -- and for less money than Verizon charges for Extra Innings???

Unless this situation changes -- and soon -- I am seriously going to consider cancelling my scheduled installation and sticking with the competition...

FIOS obtains MLB EI from In Demand - and they only provide one HD channel at this time. You will only see 1 or 2 HD games per day with FIOS TV.

DirecTV can offer more HD games with their setup. All they do is re-map existing channels to the MLB EI tier when needed. FIOS TV (or Comcast, TW, Cablevision, etc.) does not have this capability.

A follow-up question I would have (to anyone reading) is whether there has been any discussion of changes in this situation following the 2009 season -- either for the number of in Demand's HD channels or in Verizon's choice of partner for MLB EI?
