Verizon installed a backup battery unit in my basement in case my landline phone dies, but I haven't had a landline phone for over five years. I've been told by Verizon agents that I really don't need the backup battery, but about a year ago, it started beeping every fifteen minutes. One agent told me to remove the battery. When that didn't work, another agent told me to reinstall the battery and push the alarm silence button. When that didn't work, another agent told me to unplug the battery and it would never beep again. When that didn't work, another agent told me the battery was dead and I would have to pay $30 to replace it, even though I don't need it. She said it was the same as changing the battery in a portable radio, but I explained I own the radio but not the Verizon equipment. When I asked if she would pay for something she didn't need, she said no but that that's the way it is.
