If you sign up for Verizon Your Domain and link it to the address before you cancel it should remain active as long as you pay for VYD ($19.95/year).

I'm in a similar situation. We currently have FiOS and are moving to an area without Verizon coverage. We want to keep our verizon.net email addresses.  The Verizon Your Domain page says (under Membership Details):

-Available to High Speed Internet and FiOS customers only.
-Email linking unavailable for Verizon Yahoo and Verizon with Windows Live customers.

Obviously if we aren't Verizon customers, we won't have FiOS or High Speed Internet service.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks

You have to have the service to sign up for VYD (there has to be an initial account to link it to), but not to keep it. Note the line at the top that specifically says: Keep your email address, even if you switch providers.

The domain thing does work . . . sorta.  We went on sabbatical to Princeton from CA last year.  It took multiple calls to Verizon to figure out a solution for me to keep my email name for the year we were going to be gone.  After a half dozen people told me it could not be done, we got someone who could do it.  The thing a rep finally came up with was to get a domain.  So I paid the $20 and got the domain and it worked.  I got to keep my email name. The problem came when I went back to CA and re-established my Verizon internet.  Verizon refused to let me associate my email name back to my internet service and told me I would have to keep paying the $20 a year for the domain.  So stupid.  I spent literally dozens of hours with multiple reps in a ton of departments.  Talked to people all over the globe.  Everyone told me it was impossible to do. I was on hold and transferred so many times.   I got so frustrated I got heart palpitations and had to go into a yoga pose to calm down.  After a couple weeks of trying I thought of a way to get help.  I used the internet to look up names of Verizon VPs and searched for a private Verizon email for them.  I finally  got the email of a Verizon VP.  Sent him a quick email pretending I knew him (used his first name) and asked him to forward my problem to a person who could figure it out.  Suddenly I had a competent live person call me and it worked out. I did not even get put on hold.  The person said she would figure it out and call me back in a day, and she did.   So use the domain thing, but caution in thinking you can easily re-associate your email name if you reestablish Verizon internet service.

Here's a risky solution.  Cancel your old domain and immediately pick it up under your new service.  I'm guessing they put a hold on it for some period of time or something which may not allow this method to work.  I did this in the past with another online email account that expired due to me not checking it.  I was able to sign up again with the old name but all the old email were gone (new accct).  So back up all your emails, cancel, and then pick it back up  (hopefully) before someone else gets it.

For others with the same question, the website verizon created for this question specifically is www.keepmyemail.com

It does not seem we should have to make days of calls to get the emails we have saved in categories and addresses we can not duplicate from places we once lived while having had many years of verizon E mail. I would love to buy a domain but no one told me about that before my email became suspended. It is not mentioned on any verizon page for services and yet it had=s a deadline. I did not know that you could lose all things saved. The last thing you need when moving is to loose your only consistnt means of contact with many people for personal or business reasons. Further when you are moving you can not easily print the address book or specific emails.Movers packed the printer somewhere in the truck. Email is so important now it has become acceptable in court as evidence of satte of mind at the given moment. This is lost to people who actually own the messages, verizon customers.

If you rely on your ISP to store your personal information, and later decide to drop that ISP, you must answer for the consequences.  You will probably lose your "stuff."

Much better is to use one of the many good (and free) email domains online and never have to worry about xxx@comcast, , xxx@verizon,  or xxx@anything_else.

Even better, do what most experienced users do.  Use a stand-alone email client (there are many free versions) so that your mail resides where it should:  on your own computer.

Don't waste your time and money trying to keep the @verizon.net email address.  Why? Because, that email domain belongs to Verizon and if you cancel or move, that's the end of it unless you move to an area that also has Verizon service. Many folks get used to their ISP email address then, find out how much hassel it is to move or change ISP's etc.

The best practice is to put all your eggs in a public (free email service) email basket and then you will be free to move, cancel, go with cable, cancel, go with some other ISP, cancel or move again and so forth.  Your email remains the same because you are using an email service that is not dependant upon the ISP or internet service you subscribe to.

I used to think the ISP email was the only way to go because of security and the support that I got with the ISP I was a customer of.  Lately, this kind of thinking isn't the best because as time moves on, the ISP's, such as Verizon in this case, have reduced the capacity, support features and not kept that service in line with the faster speeds such as Fios. Actually, in the recent past when calling support, I was told that verizon.net email is bundled with your internet service but it isn't supported the same. I asked, are you sure? and was told yes, our email is a free service so it isn't supported, just the internet connection is.  Of course I knew that wasn't really true but you'd be suprised how many tech support people over there with Verizon actually make that statement. They even go so far as to suggest using a "free" service such as Gmail. My response to that was, "why would I do that if Verizon.net email is free and not supported?"

I'd just go with a Gmail email account/email service and set up your phones, computers etc. to either use thier webbased service or configure Outlook or Windows Live Mail to read and send them.  Those software's are refered to as "clients" and tend to work much better than a browser.

My two cents

For one thing, search the forums.  This topic has been covered in great detail many times.

Set up a Gmail account and simply have all your VZ mail forwarded to Gmail.  That will certainly take care of your issues until you get settled in your new situation.  This works because even though you may cancel your VZ services, your email account remains active for some time afterward.  BTW, consider using Gmail as your main address, and you will never have to worry in the future.

As long as you can stand the US government prying into your private affairs, that is.
