Message to change POP settings

I got a message from Verizon to change my POP settings on my Outlook and my phone. the email said to check the website in My Verizon for notification messages to check the validity of the email if I questioned it.
There are no notifications under the New Notifications section.
So can anyone tell me if this notification came from Verizon? Do I really need to change my incoming and outgoing mail servers and port settings? Or is this a scam to cause huge disruptions to our email?

And if it IS real, and from Verizon, why don't they post the notification after referring to it in an email?

Yes. I called Verizon tech support (twice) to verify that this email was truly valid. It is. I was able to change my Outlook email info on my PC but when trying to update my iPhone, the incoming server name (pop.verizon.net) could not be activated. Tech support said I would have to pay for premium service since this was an iPhone issue--imagine the gall!! Like Apple would take responsibility for verizon's upgrades! If anyone with an iPhone has been able to make this work, can you please let me know? (the smtp outgoing server is fine).

I had problems too. Found the answer in another thread. Turn off the iPhone, wait, then turn it back on. I did it and it worked.

I tried this several times yesterday and again today. My iPhone message is, "The mail server "pop.verizon.net" is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings." Doesn't work on my friend's iPhone either, so I know it's not just me.

I've spent almost an hour so far trying to verify that this "Action Required Now" message is valid.

I see no evidence that it is valid., based on the instructions received from Verizon. There is no announcement posted.

Could a person from Verizon with authority to speak for the company validate the message, please?

While you are waiting for a response from "a person from Verizon with authority" I would like to assure you that the messages that subscribers are receiving regarding changes in email server settings are indeed valid. If you do even a minor amount of searching on these forums you will eventually encounter an "official" notice from Verizon communications. For starters, take a look at this page and associated links:

I am clearly not a "person from Verizon with authority to speak for the company", but the email I received from Verizon has this paragraph near the bottom:

"If you want to verify the validity of this notification and the instructions contained herein, please sign into your MyVerizon.com account and click on “Check Verizon Announcements” under the “I Want to…” menu bar."

Have you done that? I did, the information that the email is valid is clearly right there. If you really don't believe us, then do what the email suggests.

I received this message in an email on 3/14/13. I checked the validity on the Verizon website.

As instructed I changed the POP settings to 465 and 995. My Verizon email did not work, couldn't

send or receive. I tested this using a work email. I got online with a chat tech who confirmed that

the 465 and 995 are correct. Then I used the default POP settings in Outlook Express and I was

able to send and receive. I got online with another chat tech who did not know anything about the

request to change POP settings. The tech asked permission to come online on my computer, to

reconfigure it. I did not give this permission.

Does anyone out there or at Verizon know about this?

Also, is there any way to get in touch with someone at Verizon by phone, not through chat techs?

If you give the specifics of your setup (in detail), perhap a volunteer here will be able to come up with some ideas. Browser, email client, operating system, settings in detail, hardware, changes recently made, etc. Just a start.

I also made these changes and it didn't work. This is all a big nuisance. Why does Verizon have to hassle us by making these stupid changes. Maybe I should dump verizon and go back to comcast.

If one is uncertain whether or not a technical request is valid, why would one consider clicking on a link provided to verify that it is valid? It would be like getting an email from your bank from an AOL address and then clicking on the link provided and giving them your bank account's pin number.

The email didn't suggest clicking on a link, it suggested that you manually go to the Verizon Announcements page.

Have changed the settings on my iPad and iPhone per the directions from Verizon and they are both working at this hour. Changed the settings on my iMac using Apple Mail, and I can receive email but I cannot send any email!! Very frustrating. Verizon, what gives?

Cycling power did not help. However I found under 'Advanced' / 'Authentication' if I select 'Password' my ipad verizon email now works.

I got that message about 2 months ago. I did find verification on the website. I changed the settings to the new ones. Then a few weeks later, I was unable to send or receive mail. I changed them back to the old settings and everything was fine.

Apparently, a lot of people had the same problem. I still have mine on the old settings and everything is fine. I never changed the one on my phone or tablet and don't have any problems there either.

Just remember that at some future date the settings you are using will suddenly stop working as the retire the old servers.

I've been a user of Verizon for some time. At one time, they were POP. THEN they went back to SMTP. Now, they again want to switch BACK to POP. During this time, I went from being able to NOT use the wireless system at my university (I'm an instructor) using POP to being able to use it (using SMTP). In switching BACK to POP, I will again NOT be able to use the wireless system for emails. My point?? DO NOT switch to POP until it is no longer viable. Don't believe that will ever happen as they've wanted us to switch back to POP for at LEAST 2 months. It's problematic and solves NOTHING! Bottom line ... they say you NEED to switch ... but it'll never happen! 🙂

No offense, dominik12, but your post did not make sense. The only reason I'm correcting you is because what you said could confuse someone that doesn't have a technical background. POP (POP3) and SMTP are the exact same email system - POP3 is the incoming server and SMTP is the outgoing server. What Verizon has done is enabled additional encryption - something that was missing before and I, for one, have switched my Outlook settings on all of my Verizon accounts to these newer settings and highly suggest anyone else using any type of email application do the same thing...it's a good thing. I've tested these settings on Outlook 2007, 2010 and 2013 and they work flawlessly. Be sure you're following ALL of the directions.or it won't work.

These are from Outlook 2013 but the settings will be the same regardless of the email application you're using.

Suffice it to say I believe Verizon will eventually switch over completely to this newer, more secure method of handling emails and if you've not switched your settings your email will cease to send/receive to/from your email application. You'll still be able to access via webmail but not download to your computer.

Hi, I use Applemail and just made all the changes required to prevent my email world (and hence, possibly, my entire world) from going to hell in September. After fiddling a bit I can now send and receive Email.

Here's what I did:

Go to Preferences under the Mail dropdown menu

Click "Accounts"

Change the incoming mail server to pop.verizon.net

Click Advanced

Change Port to 995 and click "Use SSL". My authentication default was already Password but if yours is not you might need to create one (I used my email address WITHOUT the @verizon.net)

Go back to Accounts

Click the dropdown for Outgoing Mail Servers and select Edit SMTP Server List

Click the + sign to create a new server and put in smtp.verizon.net

Click Advanced

Select Use Custom Port and enter 465 and select "Use SSL"

Still in Advanced, under Authentication create a Password (again, I used myemailaddress WITHOUT @verizon.net).

Exit fully out of Mail and go back in and see if it worked.

Worked for me - hope it works for you.

Hi - I changed these settings 2 months ago when first notified. i changed them in Windows Live Mail. I basically use Thunderbird for email and did not change the settings in that account. Today, I received notice that some of my "devices"? had not been changed. I went in and tried to change TBird acct and it did not work. I might just dump VZ email address and just use web email. Thanks for any thoughts on the Tbird issue.

Hi:

Months ago I ran into email problems. Support advised me to change the incoming and outgoing server names and the port numbers, which I did. Everything worked. Later, I ran into other issues and went to the support page and checked on the email settings posted on the web site. It listed the "Incoming" and "outgoing" server names and the Outlook default port numbers so I changed the settings back. Everything worked. Today I got an email "second notice" (I had never received an email "first notice") advising to change the email settings to "Pop" and "SMTP" and change the port numbers.

I believe the email is real as this haywire confusion is so typical of Verizon's approach to customer service. Nothing is consistent, nothing really works as promised, we get gee hawed around for awhile, and eventually everything works well enough that moving to Comcast is just too much overhead (and they are no better at this stuff).

Thought I saw where when accessing via webmail/OWA you didn't need to make the changes on that device. Wouldn't that mean changes needed only on home PC?

As I was attempting to change my settings this evening, I mentioned to my husband that I think we had these settings in the beginning - so now we're changing it again. I'm glad I didn't change anything on the pc - I just tried the phone and hoping that I got everything written down the way it was beforehand. And as luck would have it...I changed it, saved it, shut down and when it came back on, no mail and only two folders.

Changed everything back to the way it was and hopefully everything is as it was. Glad I wasn't in a hurry to do this when the email first came out and after reading all of the notes, I see that I'm not alone.

We will see what happens in another month!
