New email settings don't work

I received an email instructing me to use the following settings for Outlook email accounts:

Incoming Server Port Numbers: 995
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): outgoing.verizon.net
Outgoing Server Port Numbers: 465
Make sure SSL encryption is enabled for the incoming and outgoing mail server.

I made the changes, and my email didn't work.

I restored the old settings (incoming port 110, outgoing 587, no encryption) and it works fine.

Does anyone have any idea why these new settings are supposedly required?

I'm not mad. It's Verizon, after all, so I'm not even surprised that it doesn't work.

My former email settings work, and that's good enough for me. It ain't broke, so I ain't going to "fix" it.

If it stops working, then we'll see about those new settings ...

Then you probably wont be surprsed that I had to CREATE A NEW LOGIN JUST TO REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE.

And don't get me started on FIOS they promised 4 years ago, and I still DON'T HAVE IT.

The settings did not work for me either, the first few times I tried. The first part of the email did not give enough detailed information to make all the settings necessary to make it work. If you scroll down and pick your particular software, you will get detailed information ton ALL the settings you need to make. I use Outlook 2007, and clicking on that link and following the step-by-step instructions was the only way I was able to make it work. Now if I could only get these changes to work on my iPhone.....anyone?

Got the new e-mail from Verizon to change settings but they don't work. Checking outgoing messages works but receiving mail has errors and doesn't work. Changed back and all is working. Mail has been slow sending/receiving for the past several weeks, not sure if this is related.

Did not work for me either. Had to revert back to the old settings which still work fine.

The new settings are working in Mozilla Thunderbird 9.0.1, but it has made retrieving mail painfully slow. A simple test message from one verizon.net e-mail address to my primary one took several minutes to transmit. Checking takes a minute or two alone while it simply sits here waiting to connect to incoming.verizon.net...

I have an iPhone4 and the settings don't work for incoming mail. I set the settings back to port 110 and no SSL and they seem to be okay.... for now.

What's the fix?

Just got e-mail from Verizon today (1/4/12) which said to make the changes noted in the initial message. E-mail stopped working as soon as I made the changes. Went back to default, all is okay again. I'm not changing again unless e-mail stops working.

First, I get an e-mail announcing changes concerning e-mail security. It contains a link that sends me to a page supposedly telling me how to change my settings. I dutifully copy all the settings. I then realize that the page lists all the different types of software one could use to access e-mail -- and mine, Windows Live Mail, isn't there. There is no such thing as Outlook Express anymore, except in legacy versions: Windows 7 uses Windows Live Mail. So I have no idea what steps to follow, and it's clear that the deeply stupid, incompetent, and clueless people who set up this notification process and made the changes are utterly uninformed about what actual software and actual e-mail hosts come with the Windows 7 OS that millions are downloading and using on their computers. Next, it's suggested I use an automatic set-up, so that the adjustments will be made for me. I click on the link. A l-o-o-o-ong time passes. Blank page. Fail. I return to the instruction page. There's a link for Contact Us. I go to that page. You can call, e-mail, etc. I click on e-mail -- it says that Verizon will respond in one business day. I get sent to a screen that asks for my ZIP code and is otherwise blank. I put in my ZIP code, click Go -- and get returned to the Contact Us page. I then click on Live Chat, "Chat with an agent!" I get sent to the ZIP code page again. Same response. Fail. I go to the forums page and -- after an overly complex sign-in process -- discover that no one, repeat NO ONE who followed instructions and changed settings could access e-mail. Can you say, "Verizon has the worst customer service in the known universe?" Who was the staggeringly stupid person who approved the sending of an e-mail that is filled with lies, useless information, and garbage from top to bottom, and that sends you to an Alice-in-Wonderland place where you read, "Verizon tech support ise here to help!" but all links return you to a useless page? The rage, frustration, and loathing I feel for people who actually earn a living behaving like this are impossible to put into words. Every person responsible for this fiasco should be profoundly ashamed. Needless to say, I will not change my settings, and if there is trouble with my e-mail, I will peel paint off walls with my telephone calls. Despicable.

I tried the new settings when I received the first notice last week, they didn't work.

I tried the new settings when I received the second notice today , they still don't work.

The old settings still work perfectly.

my interpretation is that VERIZON assumes that we all have FIOS. I am on a slower speed due to cost factor and the settings didn't work for me as well. I am running Oulook 2003 so that may be a factor, but my hunch is that when i pulled up the Outlook 2003 link, it was headed with FIOS.

Maybe Verizon should have all combinations of users if they plan to update settings. If it ain't broke don't send me an update.

Using Thunderbird on Ubuntu I have options to change how the password is submitted but the destructions from VZ don't take that into account. It also tells me that I'm using an unsupported browser to access this page -- as if any rational web programmer is going to write browser-specific code any time in the last 4 years. I have the POP settings functioning for incoming.verizon.net but the SMTP settings for outgoing.verizon.net fail. I know it isn't T-bird that's the problem because I have access to 3 other SMTP servers which have been using security for several years without issue. So I guess the only thing to do is to wait until it stops working and then call the support line, waste 3 hours being forced to lie to them about what email client I'm using and eventually it will work. Thank Cow I have other SMTP servers available to use.

Same here, except my original settings for outgoing is 25 ---it works, but McAfee picks up Trojans every vew days.

He did get a supervisor to call and he explained that the email had gone out too early as the servers were not ready yet. While I was on the phone to the supervisor Raymundo decided that I was not responding so ended the chat session.

Sadly this is not the end of the nonsense. The supervisor could not grasp the idiocy of Raymundo agreeing to mark all future emails containing false information with "Please ignore" clearly at the top. When I asked for his supervisor I got cut off.

Here's some info that may help. I spent about an hour on the phone in order to speak to a Verizon supervisor (2nd level support) who consulted with their email techs.

The existing email server ports (587 for outbound, 110 for inbound, no SSL encryption) has been the standard email ports. Verizon is introducing encrypted, secure email links for customers using server ports 465 for outbound and 995 for inbound with SSL encryption turned on. The idea is to provide for more secure email. However, if a user is running some sort of anti-virus email scanning program (usually a plug-in for Outlook or Outlook Express), there can arise a software setting conflict between the encrypted link and the email scanner. In my case, I use Avast, and when the encryption is turned on in Outlook set-up, the anti-virus email scanner may develop problems, requiring the anti-virus configuration settings be changed. In my case, Avast indicated that it cannot scan email on the encrypted link, and the encryption should be turned off so that the email scanning function can operate. So, I simply reset the Outlook port settings back to 587 & 110, turned off SSL encryption, and everything is back to normal.

I advised Verizon that even if the encryption links work from their end, users may experience problems with their anti-virus email scanners. Since these programs are usually from 3rd parties (not Verizon software), this will put a burden on customers. I did manage to get Verizon to state that they are not planning to turn off Ports 587 and 110, which would force everyone to try to get the new ports working with their email. They are shutting down the older Port 25, however, which will require moving to another port for email (such as 587 & 110).

I guess Verizon didn't think this migration plan through to check out all of its ramifications. Seems like you need to be a retired IT network engineer (like me) in order to make some sense of all this.

My Outlook Express 6 worked after changing both POP3 and SMTP settings from 110 to 995 and 25 to 465, respectively, but receiving E-mail was much slower than it was. I have DSL with 1M down 384K up, suitable for my needs and cheap ($13.99/month).

The big problem was with Norton Internet Security 2012. Related to the Norton Antivirus part of the Internet Security package I am configured to protect both incoming and outgoing E-mail. I noticed that the Display Progress Indicator that shows that the outgoing message is being scanned was no longer working so I tried to configure ports 995 and 465 in the protected ports field. Norton does not allow them to be added because they are used for "other than supported e-mail protocols" nor will it allow me to replace ports 110 and/or 25 because "Norton Internet Security automatically protects the default SMTP port 25 and the default POP3 port 110. You cannot remove these default ports."

So to get my outgoing protection functionality back, I restored the SMTP port back to 25 and unchecked "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)." I left it checked for POP3 port 995. So now my incoming E-mail speed is back up for some reason, I can scan outgoing mail, and I can take advantage of whatever the new Verizon security is for incoming mail. I may change that back to POP3 port 110 because Norton apparently cannot protect it on that port. I may trust Norton more than Verizon for this because Norton protects incoming E-mail against viruses and other security threats and I'm thinking that maybe Verizon is only dealing with the spam issue.

This whole thing is a pain and it's strange that both the old and the new settings are working. So, what is the effective date? When will the old settings no longer work? Why did Verizon change the ports to ones used for "other than supported e-mail protocols" according to Norton?

I changed the settings in Outlook 7 and they actually worked! But only for two days then nothing but errors! Changed back and they all work fine now!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it comes to mind!!

I just ended a conversation about this with a FIOS rep -- after trying everything he suggested, I became convinced that the problem was on his side, non on mine. But then he told me that NO ONE ELSE other than myself is having these problems -- check in here and I see that this is not true at all.

My settings were fine up until this evening, when they apparently changed, and I no longer could access the in coming e-mail (outgoing was fine). I tried tinkering with my settings and finally found something that worked -- I turned OFF SSL for the incoming e-mail, and 'magically' everything started to work again.

Does Verizon actually read these messages or do I need to contact them directly to tell them they screwed up?

FYI: Followed up with tech support again -- they realize that they rolled back changes so that SSL is no longer used on incoming e-mail, but that will change in a couple of days -- so heads up because you'll have to change your settings again.

Amen to that! As soon as I changed my setting to the new SSL setting, everthing ground to a HALT & now on the email software for both home & work do not retrieve my email. I can't even get to the point of entering a password without a error box saying "Failed to read a valid greeting from POP mail server verizon.net".

I restored back to the original settings and things worked again. Add me to the list of people for whom the new settings worked for a few days, now stopped working. Also using Avast, but turned it off and that didn't change anything. I didn't bother calling Verizon as I figure I probably know more than whoever I'd reach on the phone from India...

I made all the changes, including checking the suggestions for Office 2010. Works if I go into my accounts and carefully "check" each one, without making any changes. Then I get my email for the rest of the day. Next day it stops again. I'm going to try going back and see if that does work.

Why can't they stop "improving" their product and start making it work. Personally, I believe they want us to use the webmail, which I find very cumbersome.

Yes, I got email on January 5. Now, on January 6, it isn't coming through.

i've been a Apple Mail user for years. tried the new settings and so far only the outgoing worked. like many others here changed the incoming port back to 110 and disabled SSL. now back to receiving mail. hope verizon can look into this.

I had the same problem after following Verizon's instructions. I turned off the SSL on the advanced tab and was then able to receive email. I don't know if this will cause future problems, but it's working now.

plus one. It didn't work initially, then worked till about 2.40pm est. I'm really peed off.

1) i've missed important business emails

2) I changed 6 accounts on four devices; now I have to reverse them all.

Would verizon like to compensate me for lost business and my time?

When will they understand that email access is a serious issue and if they can't provide it reliably, they should just not?

Did as everyone suggested and went back to 110 and 587. Now am getting my email. So what do I do the next time I receive an email from Verizon telling me I need to change my settings? WAIT!! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Maybe they will get to the point where I have to change, but no longer do I react immediately.

Shame on you, Verizon. Who needs this kind of hassle. I am very tech saavy and I cannot do this on all my devices. And I, too, am baffled as to why I got a message saying I needed to do this and no one else on our business account did. What about those typical users who have no idea how to navigate through this. There are probably thousands of those. I think you are going to have lots of calls so gear up.

I changed my PC quickly. Changed my iPhone yesterday and it was working fine, until today. No email with the pop3 settings.

And no one on Technical support can tell me why it is impossible to change my email settings on my iPad. We went around and around with this and your support to no avail. Thank goodness the old setting work but for how long.

My husband decided to wait to get letter before changing his phone and PC, Never got the letter but now neither of those devices allow him to get email. We used the same settings for his PC as mine to no avail.

Ok, call tech support and are told they are not aware of any changes to email settings. Now come on!

So after hours he is still without email.

I am very, very suprised that a large company such as Verizon has jumped into something like this without better directions, better assistance and better forethought.

Again, shame on you Verizon.

Some of my email devices work; some do not; neither of my husband's work and he was told Verizon has no known problems with email setting. They suggest he contact Microsoft.

Whew! What a mess.
