cannot connect safely to server

My Samsung Galaxy Avant is not loading new emails; "cannot connect safely to server" is shown after any attempts to change settings. Emails are coming in at AOL and MacMail on home computer but not on the phone.  Outgoing mail is working however.  Using the Android email that comes with the phone. Never had a problem until this week.

Any suggestions?

So apparently this problem is not affecting Outlook as well. I have received mail on my Outlook on my PC but I now have 4 emails hanging out in my outbox showing some type of encription error. I'll try this change on my Outlook settings as well. This is so darn frustrating. I may seek out TMobile's help but I think the solution has already been given and I'll just have to deal.

Editing my post below to say this problem is NOW affecting my Outlook on my PC. It seems I am getting email but all my attempts at sending from my PC are getting caught in outbox due to some error.

Thank you so much for posting that!  I was having the same issue on my T-Mobile smart phone and your solution worked. 🙂

Thank you all! Both my droid phone & wife's droid tablet stopped receiving Verizon/AOL Feb 22.  No problems on her PC or my OSX/IOS devices.  Almost ready to remove/re-install on Androids following advice above.  Question (I'm bit of protocol novice) is will the re-installion using POP instead of POP3 affect the stored server data (i.e. will we have to forward all this stuff to something like g-mail to still have access to old e-mails)?  Thanks for any advice.  Agree this was a stupid thing for Verizon/AOL to do with no notification to users, there must be millions of people with this problem.

POP really means pop3 (early versions of POP  predate most people use of eMail).

You shouldn't have to uninstall and reinstall.  If you do, you will not lose anything that is still on the server, but you will lose anything that you donwloaded to your android device.

@no idea why you started having trouble(I have had no trouble with mine), but the usual instructions apply.   Make sure you try adding @verizon.net to your email name.  Use SSL, pop.verizon.net port 995 for POP, and smtp.verizon.net Port 465 for SMTP.  Clear text password (SSL will protect it from being seen by snoopers).

You're lucky. Mine is still not working. Can't get anywhere. Nothing works. This stinks. Verizon stinks. They don't care.

Thanks for this fix! I have been screwing around with this problem for weeks & this was finally the answer. Too bad between AOL & Verizon they can't help out their customers who pay their salaries. Great job!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks that  worked for me as well on my galaxy note 4 phone. However on my galaxy tab 4 adding pop settings manually in the samsung account email app will not bring the entire verizon login name from where you enter to the incoming pop info page. The login name there drops everything  from the @ on.

I too lost access to my verizon.net email around the same time as everyone else posting on this thread.  I spent way too many hours than I care to talk about trying to get my AOL/verizon.net email account working again on my Samsung Note 8.0 tablet, and had given up for the last couple of months.  Found your post today and it worked perfectly.  Thank  you so much for posting the solution!!!

The obvious question...Why couldn't AOL have posted a solution with settings that work???

Same issue here -- as of Feb. 22 I cannot sync my Email on a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with my AOL account, although test emails sent from it do appear in my online account. Testing the configuration settings generated the "cannot connect safely to server" message. First time I've ever had any problems with this account.

Freaken ditto

Cannot safely connect to server

Just got off the phone with Verizon agent - They at this time have no idea what's going on

I have Samsung Galaxy S6 with Verizon / Now AOL email - aol sucks

Had NO problems until Verizon went over to aol. Problems like frequently having to re-sign my password.

AOL is also looking for a fee to increase email security.  I have a hunch they're behind this.  My wife has an imac and they charged her $5 a Month for months without her agreement they explain something to do with a security ad on

Anyway feel bad for anyone going through this cannot connect issue that I've spent practically the whole day on with no resolve

If anyone has the answer I'd sure appreciate they share it.

This is so unacceptable. Verizon owns AOL. They dump our e-mail onto AOL and AOL acts as if we are illegal aliens. The reason everyone is having trouble is that these they changed the certification chain for the POP server. It used to start at DigitCert and end in Verizon in Irving Texas and pop.verizon.net. When these problems started a few days ago the chain changed to go from Digicert to Yahoo in Sunnyvale California and pop.aol.com which leads to a name conflict.

I have no issue with the change but why do they not notify the users to change their port settings to AOL? They just left us in the dark to muddle through on our own.

I am havig the same problem.... until last night I was able to get incomig ...no outgoing service... same notice.... server problem... After a veryyyyy long conversaton earlier with aol.. tech... with no solution.... (told to call verizon..... call t mobile.... ect... ) I now see that the aol website is down... and all email service seems to be out too.... My gmail account is fine.... so it is definately an AOL problem... so annoying...

Thanks so much for your post.  I was on the verge of migrating my phones and internet to another provider.

Does anyone from Verizon really care about their customers? If this many people have had the same problem since Feb 22 (that's about the time my problem started too, though it took me a couple of days to notice it), then it's obviously something they have done and not their customers. It's about time (March 5) to fix it. DO YOU CARE VERIZON? Or are you just too big for us to matter? A sign of the times....
