Travel pass activated- no data/text/call

My mom have her line under my account, she visited foreign country for a month.

she already have active foreign cell plan, and she swapped cell usage, primary call number, and turn off data usage of Verizon. She disabled “cellular data switching” option on iPhone long time ago because she visit this country pretty occasionally. But we kept turned on the line, same as this time and many time before.

She never had issue using her Verizon # to send iMessage/Facetime before, because it’s not using cell line, and she used foreign cell service data network to send message, but I just got message Travelpass got triggered.

For now, to prevent additional charges I told her to turn off her line on iPhone.

1. she turned off her line while she was in foreign country, will travelpass keep getting charged even though she disabled the service?

2. Why it got triggered?

The iMessage and FaceTime apps are linked to the Verizon number, so if your mom was using those apps, then it went through Verizon, hence triggering a Travel Pass charge.  The only surefire way to prevent the Verizon number from being used for something when there is a foreign SIM is to remove the Verizon SIM or otherwise delete the Verizon eSIM if it is an eSIM so there is only the foreign SIM to use.  Apps would have to be reconfigured under a new Apple ID and whatever the foreign phone number is methinks, otherwise they will be running through the Verizon number.

Hello, WKK_. Help is here. Wishing her safe travels! What is the make/model of your mother's phone? Is she using a Dual SIM Card?

She using dual sim card, one with visiting country's coverage, the other one is Verizon.

She disabled "cellular data switching" option in iPhone which makes iPhone automatically switch cell service depending on coverage. She set primary cell/data option to international SIM card.  Which means she sent iMessage w/ international SIM card's data network, not verizon.

She's using iPhone 14.

Thanks for the details. A 24-hour TravelPass session starts automatically when you use your device in a TravelPass country (e.g., make or answer a phone call, send a text or use data).
