A Jetpack firmware update is 8 to 20 MB. A firmware update will use your data and it is not a free download.

Thanks for that info. However don't feel we should then pay for updating it
as we paid for this device and its function is to allow passage and
measurement of data usage. Surely if it requires updating then that must
have become necessary due to changes made by Verizon, so why should we have
to pay for its updating by using our data.
The reason I was prompted to ask this question is this device inexplicably
uses more data compared to using our phone hotspot plan through another
network. We changed to that from initially using Verizon fulltime and
encountering this issue constantly to the point we were tearing our hair
out with Verizon claiming we were using the data despite usage occurring on
days that we never used any data for sure.
While we use the phone hotspot with a 3 gig monthly allowance we never go
over it and mostly have significant carryover. We are travelling and only
now recharge the Jetpack with data when we are without service with the
other network.
This was necessary a week ago and Lo and behold within 1 day of a 5 gig
recharge 2gig have been inexplicably used.

Jetpacks can be updated Over The Air from the Jetpacks Admin page or can be downloaded externally from the Jetpacks support website. We should assume the OTA updates will be counted against you like any other network data you consume but maybe VZW has that traffic isolated and excluded from the billing process. Perhaps a VZW rep could chime in here and confirm. But the firmware updates from the VZW website can be downloaded and transferred from anywhere to your Jetpack. You can do this at a WiFi hotspot or a friends or neighbors house.
Confirm your Jetpack model number and we can shoot you a link to the driver download page and instructions.
