5G Roll-out Timeline: Initial 4 Cities (Houston, Indy, LA, Sacramento)

So, the 5G roll-out in the initial 4 cities started on 10/1/18. How extensive was it? How many customers in each city were included? Why is no roll-out timeline available for those of us who want the 5G service but cannot get it yet? Are we talking months? Years? Why can we not get at least a ballpark estimate?

I keep asking friends and colleagues in Houston who are Verizon customers if they have 5G. When they say not yet, I then ask if they know of anyone who does have 5G. Answer is no. How extensive is this roll-out anyway? How many Houston customers are using the 5G service?

In the 4 cities it's only is some of parts those cities it's not getting further deployed anywhere until 5G equipment that is actually standards based is available which will be in a few months. Like LTE it will take years for it to fully roll out across the country. As far as fixed wireless Verizon has stated 30 million homes pass is their goal. there are 125 million homes in the US so do the math.

I have to admit that I don't know much about it yet. I did hear that it will be allocated to a much higher frequency that 4G resulting in a shorter coverage range. It also won't penetrate structures as well either. There are still spotty areas where 4G doesn't exist so I'm not sure why anybody would be wanting to rush 5G. As you said, it will be several years before it is usable. Just my idea. Solid 4G is fine for me.

Fixed 5G uses a small antenna mounted outside your home. 5G cells are within 2000 feet of an area to be covered. As far as mobile 5G will be used mainly outdoors which help alleviate congestion outdoor and indoors too because the people outside will be using those mmwave frequencies leaving fewer people using the 4G frequencies.

Go to Verizon website and search 5G coverage maps. If Verizon still puts them up you’ll be surprised how small the areas are. It must require new hardware installed on existing cell towers. Worse yet, perhaps the 5G signal disrupts normal cell signal and 5G requires new, separate towers. If so, Verizon 5G is years away for the average consumer. To make things worse, if this is indeed the case, Verizon will die. Service related defections will skyrocket, especially as the competition offers a product that qualifies as 5G. I am personally planning on completing my current contractual obligations and switching away from Verizon!
