My daughter and several of her friends, all have husbands deployed with the USMC. Their husbands have had to call family members to have them notify their spouses that the phones on the ships are UNABLE to call "some" Verizon phones. My daughter has spent HOURS with your customer support to no avail. One of your "specialist" suggested writing letters! This is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE! These boys/men are deployed for 7 months and for them to be unable to talk to their wives is deplorable!
Please do not contact me suggesting silly remedies. OBVIOUSLY, there is something in place that is preventing these men from dialing ship to shore to Verizon phones. Unless you have a solution to this HUGE PROBLEM, I will not expect to hear from you.

I'm sorry to hear about that, however, just out of curiosity, did they say that the problem was with Verizon? Is it possible that it's an issue with whatever system/service that the USMC is using to call out?

Of course they are blaming it on the ship to shore capabilities. HOWEVER, there are wifes that have Verizon that are able to receive calls from the ships. At one time, I thought it was just Blackberry's, however, there are ones that cannot receive calls and do not have Blackberry's. I am just very, very upset that Verizon isn't doing more to resolve this situation as phone calls are their LIFELINE to their families. Know what I mean?

It could be related to quite a few things, possibly even due to a problem in one of the switches. I do not agree that writing a letter would work, just because not many people really use that anymore, at least, not compared to e-mail. Have you tried contacting the USMC to see where the issue lies/what steps are being taken to fix it?

No, we haven't contacted the USMC. Honey, there are approx. 2200 Marines per ship in addition to everyone else. I think the MC have more important issues at hand. I believe my daughter is going to AT&T to get a new phone. After dealing with Verizon the past few days, I believe she has just given up and going to do whatever it takes to be available for a phone call from her Marine.

Just as a cheaper alternative, why not just get a prepaid phone (provider doesn't matter, but I can see why you wouldn't want to get a Verizon prepaid phone), put some minutes on it, and just have him call that number? That way she could get the phone calls from him for a lot cheaper than opening up a new account with another carrier.
Another option, though, is to use the internet. VoIP, or an IM program all would work. You could always try to call Verizon back, though, since different customer service agents will tell you different things. Just keep calling them until you get someone that has a solution for you, or can tell you what is going on, why, when it will be fixed, etc. Keep in mind, though, that with ship to shore calling, there are a huge number of other variables added to the equation that are not present with phone to phone calling.

Not every phone on Verizon is capable of being used overseas, hence why some people can use them and some people cannot. It also depends on the plan that they have and if its been arranged for overseas use, there's a lot of variables in it.
