Terrible Data and Call Reliability in Montgomery County, Maryland

I live in Montgomery County, Maryland - a large and populated suburban county just outside of Washington D.C.

For some reason, Verizon's service is awful nearly everywhere in the central and northern parts of the county, such as Gaithersburg, Germantown, etc. You can be at a large population center full of shopping, restaurants, and people, and if you have Verizon, your phone is basically non-functional. This is also true on I-95 between DC and Baltimore. Couldn't maintain a video call over Facetime. Heck, I couldn't even keep a reliable voice call going today.

I thought this was just me (and my girlfriend on a totally separate plan), but I asked on the local subreddit, and it seems to be a common experience, with dozens of people reporting the same issues.

Here are two sample locations where I've had repeated problems with non-useable data despite a strong signal:

  • Kentlands Market Square, 316 Kentlands Blvd, Gaithersburg, MD 20878
  • Clarksburg Village Center, 11911 Little Seneca Pkwy, Clarksburg, MD 20871

How is this acceptable, Verizon? And what, if anything, do you plan to do about this? As it stands, I'm switching to T-Mobile or AT&T in a month when I will no longer have to repay the gift card promo I received when I switched.
