About auto pay: can I simply pay Verizon by transferring funds from my bank instead of giving Verizon access to my bank account?

Sounds like you want to manually pay your bill by transferring funds which isn't auto pay.
JIMHAT64, in order to receive the autopay discount, you will need to go into your My Verizon and set it up using the following: checking account, debit card, or Verizon Credit Card. This link will go over this further: https://www.verizon.com/support/auto-pay-faqs/
