slow data after switching to unlimited

DONFOS90, as a mother of 3, I know that if those web pages are not loading my children would certainly be distraught. We are certainly glad to look into this experience. Do you notice that this happens at specific times of day or certain locations? Which unlimited plan did you select? What make and model phones are experiencing this?

Its an Iphone 7 purchased in dec (not a phone issue, a plan issue. We chose the cheaper unlimited plan but honestly we were only going over by a gig or so on the lg plan. If this a congestion thing, I don't want to have to pay double for the more expensive plan if I can go back to getting priority data on the 8GB lg plan..

You should price the cheaper unlimited plan appropriately if the 8GB lg plan is getting priority in times of congestion. or a least start the throttling at 8GBs.

I just switched and immediately the same thing has happened to ours.always 4g before.now it goes to 1x,3g,4g....within minutes of switching plans.this sucks

The iPhone 7 is an awesome phone and I agree DONFOS90, it's not a phone issue because the difference in plans can cause your speeds to be slower depending on which plan you choose. With the Go-Unlimited plan, in times of congestion, your data may be temporarily slower than other traffic. Here is a link with additional information https://vz.to/2wpJGOU

. With our Beyound Unlimited Data plan, you have better data speeds because each line is allowed 22 GB of data in the bill cycle before speeds are slower than other traffic in times of congestion. If you need a plan that doesn't slow down your data speeds during times of congestion or after 22gb per line being used, the tiered data plan would work best for you. You can also have your family use wifi as much as possible to help with excessive data usage on our Unlimited Data Plan.

You can choose to have your data start being throttled after 8GB if you so choose on your old plan. This is called safety mode. You can switch back to a tiered data plan and activate safety mode. Then you will have unthrottled data up until 8 GB and then throttled data for anything above that and you won't be charged for any overages.

I feel you. To say that unlimited speeds have slowed to a crawl would be a joke. Most of the time, even with full bars of service, my phone still has upload and download speeds slower that 1 Mbps. HOW IS THAT EVEN 4G?! I usually have to wait about ten minutes for any page or vidoe to load, just to have it freeze or load incorrectly! The only reason my household got the unlimited plan was to avoid having to spend so much on getting faster Wi-Fi, but so far that is the only thing that works. I would be extremely glad to switch to some other carrier if it means faster streaming or any loading at all. And NO, it's not different when I go outside, or at any different times of the day. It's always at the same crippling speed no matter how many apps I remove and features I disable on my phone. In all I'm just extremely upset with the way Verizon is acting like they are actually doing something to fix this problem. If nothing is actually done SOON, I'm switching my carrier. (My plan also is supposed to by UNLIMITED, UNTHROTTLED, 4G LTE)

I just recently upgraded to the go unlimited plan and it’s terrible! I don’t recommend it to anyone. I hope someone from Verizon reads this. Why even offer your customer a terrible service so that we can all talk about it. so mad right now I had to vent somewhere.

Sorry for the frustration everyone is reporting. Feel validated that this is a real issue, and it makes me angry that Verizon support pretends it's some surprise by asking for people's zipcodes and devices. After traveling for a month and relying on tethering and my 4G a lot more, I had some overages, so I switched to unlimited, and the bandwidth has been abysmal. I am only using 5-10GB/month. Download/upload speeds that were once 10gbps/3gbps are now <1/<1 consistently. And of course my bill is now $30/month more. Since the back-and-forth over forums and Twitter will be painstaking, I suppose I'll just go to a store to try to find answers.

Aside from that, the speeds can be slowed down during times of congestion after reaching a certain amount of data in a billing cycle. The Beyond plan https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/beyond-unlimited-faqs/ provides 15GB of a hotspot at 4G speeds and then speeds are reduced to 600 Kbps for the rest of the cycle. The Above plan https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/above-unlimited-faqs/ provides 20GB of 4G speeds before the speeds are reduced for the rest of the cycle. We would like to find out more since it was mentioned that you only used about 5-10GB per month. Did the speeds improve during certain times of the day? Did you notice faster speeds after moving to another location?

I have NOT used a significant amount of data in my billing cycle. As of

right now:

Total data used by [removed]

3.51 GB total data used

1.86 GB hotspot data used

After 20 GB, hotspot speeds are reduced to up to 600 kbps.

This has been ALL over Durham since I upgraded to unlimited, int he same

locations that, for the prior few months, I had no problems with tethering.

So these "periods of congestion" appear to be any time during the workday

now that I'm on unlimited, and this just isn't acceptable. I'm very

disappointed

If I don't notice a chance in the next couple of weeks, I'll be downgrading

back to my old data plan and using another network and device for hotspot.

Just be sure to take a look at the provider you choose, because they ALL have different tiers of unlimited with the lowest tier ALSO like Verizon's. If you are leaving Verizon simply because they have a low cost unlimited plan which does not meet your needs to switch to another provider which ALSO has a low cost unlimited plan with the same restrictions, kind of makes one scratch their head...

I have had the same terrible experience as everyone else. Using an iPhone X. I switched to Verizon from ATT about 10yrs ago because their coverage was better when I traveled around the middle of th me country for business. About 2 months ago I switched from the 8gb fixed data plan when I added my so onto our plan (now 3 lines) to the goUnlimited plan and it has been a horrible experience. I have experienced barley usable < 1mbs downlod speeds in Atalanta, Dallas, Nashville, OKC, Barcelona, Sicily, Istanbul. Those speeds are not enough to load basic web pages or send pics through email. Before switching to the goUnlimited plan I have never had an issue, other than normal rate infrequent congestion. And yes, I used my phone in similar cities in the US and abroad with no problem. I know the answer is upgrade to the higher tier Unlimited plan but that is a terrible

answer The goUnlimited plan says it will throttle you ”at times of congestion” but that shouldn’t be more than 50% of the time in cities all over the US or the world!! And when it throttles, do it to 2-5mbs downloads, not 0.5mbs!! The throttling should be to limit super users trying to watch HD video all day long, it should not make the phone so unusable that a normal user like me can’t read a basic new story with nothing but text on the page!!! Like I said, this has been a terrivle

experience and is causing a very long time user to look elsewhere even though I could give Verizon even more money to try out the beyondUlimited plan to see if that fixes the problem. Sorry, had to vent, I feel better now.

To be honest, I just switched from the 8gb plan to the goUnlimited plan less than 2 months ago so I am trying to give it a fair shake before deciding what to do. I am a fair person and I completely understand the complexity and variability of something like a wireless network with millions of users so I wanted to make sure the problems were not temporary or tied to a specific location or situation. I have used the plan enough now to know it is not just a few locations and I am getting throttled to < 1mbps more than 50% of the time I am off wifi while traveling (through airports, in ubers, around town, etc.) in several different cities. Once I realized that, I began to research online and found numerous threads (including this one) discussing this same problem so it is clear it is a real and not uncommon problem.

I realize I can switch to the more expensive unlimited tier and that MIGHT fix my problem, I really won't know until I switch. But my reasons for posting are several fold:

1. To vent my frustration - thanks, I feel better ;-)

2. To let others know that I am having the same problem that they may be having

3. To let Verizon know that I am having this problem and that I am unhappy with the service

4. Most important - to let Verizon know that it is unacceptable for someone paying nearly $200/mth for 3 phones and a watch to get regularly throttled to a speed that is nearly unusable to view basic web pages are receive email and texts.

Again, I understand the need to throttle. But throttle people streaming video or playing Fortnite, not people surfing basic websites and reading emails. Why not throttle to 2mbps instead of 0.5mbps? The problem for Verizon is that throttled speed is so low that it becomes unusable and that makes people like me upset (and I'm fairly reasonable) and that's when someone like me starts to shop around after being a happy and loyal customer for a decade. Even if ATT or TMobile is no better at the low level Unlimited plan, it makes a good customer unhappy and we might switch just to find out.

My wife and I have been with Verizon since 2001. We recently upgraded to an unlimited data plan and it is absolutely non-functional. My data speeds, based on the test link that Verizon provided, is 0.74 download and 0.80 upload. A far cry from the advertised 5-12 Mbps that we were promised. I’m about 1 month away from switching to AT&T. Most of my friends have AT&T and their speed is lightning fast. I think, as a loyal customer for over 17 years, Verizon owes an explanation.

We would never want you to feel dissatisfied with your service, Slucas8. The speeds you mentioned are definitely not what we want for you. Is this a constant speed you experience? What's the ZIP Code where you experience these speeds?

Same here. I just switched from an 8gb plan to GoUnlimited. We have two iPhone 6s's and the speed has dropped to an absolute crawl. I can't even check my Ring Doorbell unless I have WiFi now. Downloading Pandora from the App Store took 15 minutes. I've been with Verizon for many years, but I'm looking into other carriers now. One Verizon rep told me that going the next level up to BeyondUnlimited should take care of the problem, but that seems like a bait and switch to me, and my bill is already over $160.00. I'm displeased with Verizon for the first time ever, and that's saying a lot.

Same story here except I have Beyond Unlimited. After my data is used up, my speeds are non existent until after midnight till about 5am. Call it congestion all you want, it is utter bs. I live in a rural community. How congested can it be? If it truly is congested, maybe spend some of our money and uncongest things.... A 30mb file fails to download 9/10 times on Google drive. 30 measily mb takes half an hour to download at these speeds. It's about to make me gouge my eyes out. Decade+ customer, 3 lines, bill is nearly $300 a month and it doesn't work 75% of the time. As soon as the phone on my sister's plan is paid for I'm cancelling the whole thing and going elsewhere. Take your "up to" jargon and shove it. Since going unlimited I have never seen more than 30% of the claimed "up to 600mbps" after my data is up. I have filed a complaint with the FTC, everyone else should do the same via email here - antitrust@ftc.gov

You people don't even read our replies .you just copy paste some bs reply over and over. We're not here because we need better plans. We're here because after we are deprioritized our speeds are useless. Not just slow, absolutely unusable. I can't even open your speed test page because it takes so long. Over 5 minutes. That is why we are complaining. If we actually got the 600Kb, we probably wouldnt be here. But instead I get 180Kb at 2520 latency. It's far from useable. We understand that we have X amount of data and then get slowed down. We get it. What we don't get is why do we pay for a service that is utterly unusable after the data is up. Unlimited data is worthless if it doesn't even work. Get a clue!!!

Zip code is 37043. Speeds are that slow most of the time, all day long. They seem to be a little better late at night. There are times I cant even use the maps app on my phone as a GPS since it wont load a location. This happens on both my phone and my wife's phone. Very disappointing.

I read all five pages of posts in this topic. I have the same issue of being constantly throttled with my new Unlimited Go plan I was pitched by a customer service rep.

It's throttled I'd say 95% of the time, and not always in the same city. I just drove 90 miles and back today and it did it everywhere: San Luis Obispo, Buellton, Santa Barbara, CA. And my speed is WAY worse than what others have reported: .05 Mbps download!!! What's that, the old modem speed? Needless to say no web pages would come up on my phone. Nothing.

I guess I'll get my canned customer service reply now. Here's the info you'll request:

This only started happening after I upgraded to Unlimited Go from an 8GB plan. Sucks.

I understand where you're coming from with your thoughts about the data. The LTE network is a resource shared by all VZW customers, and each of our plans has different ways of managing the data. The Go Unlimited plan is designed for those who want the security of unlimited but mostly use Wi-Fi. You can experience reduced speeds when you're in an area with a lot of other VZW users. As you move out of that area connecting to a different tower or the number of users decreases, your speeds return to normal.

Based on what you've shared you're using your data more often than a typical Go Unlimited user. A better fit for you would be either our Beyond or Above Unlimited plans. On these plans, data is managed differently. With the Beyond Unlimited plan, you can use 22 GB of data on your line, before possibly encountering reduced speeds. On the Above Unlimited plan, you can use 75 GB before hitting that point.

You also don't need to pick one unlimited plan for everyone on your account. With Mix & Match unlimited plans, someone who is comfortable with Go Unlimited can use it, while your line using Beyond Unlimited (or Above). "Security" of Unlimited? It's the opposite. It makes a user VERY much NOT secure. Since one never really gets "reduced speed" but instead gets completely unresponsive internet connections, I can imagine needing an Uber late at night and not being able to get a ride, or be driving in an unfamiliar part of town and not being able to get Maps up and end up in a dangerous place. I would be afraid to let my wife go on a trip or go out at night without me for this reason.

Look, I understand why there should be throttling at times. However, this is not throttling, it is the complete stoppage of the internet. And when it's out, it could be out for a while (longest I've waiting before giving up is about ten minutes). Verizon is FALSELY MARKETING this plan, in both its upfront marketing and also its FAQs.

So, in attempting to resolve this today I had my first horrible experience with Verizon Customer Service, which I've always in the past thought of highly. The whole thing took me about 90 minutes (only 10 minutes of that was initial wait time for my first rep). I'll tell the story...

I need to occasionally use internet while not in Wifi, so I had to get off of this Unlimited Go plan right away. I first used Verizon's chat. The rep was not very intelligent for one, but he also lied to me. He told me, no, none of our Unlimited plans throttle data. I then sent him the FAQ and a couple articles that show they do. He said, that's right, we reduce the speed at times. I told him that's what throttling is. What B.S. Anyway, eventually after going back and forth for some time (it took several minutes between his replies), he said it must be a technical issue on my end and wanted to send me over to tech support. I got off the chat at that point, as we all know this is not an issue for tech support.

Then I called on the phone to get a rep I could talk to. Got someone who, while nice enough, was particularly difficult to understand. But I stuck with it. I told her I wanted to go back to my 8 GB plan (which does not throttle), and she said she could do that and the change would take effect on Oct 22, 16 days away. I said that was unacceptable as my wife and I could be mostly without the internet when away from wifi until then. She said there was no way to do it earlier--apparently, you can upgrade immediately, not downgrade. It's obvious why Verizon has this distinction: downgrading causes Verizon to make less money, so they make you wait for the change; but if you want to upgrade and pay them more money, sure, they can do it in an instant.

She said I could buy a block of 5 GB of data to help me get through until the 22nd. Something like $35. I told here that as an appx 25 year customer that I should get than free, since I was talked into this plan by a Verizon rep who didn't tell me about the throttling issues, and also because I am unable to cancel this bait-and-switch plan for 16 days. After quite a long hold, she said she could not do that.

I asked for a supervisor. After another very long hold, she said there were none available. I said I'd hold however long it took.

Another long hold. Then she came back with a solution. She would upgrade me to Beyond Unlimited, set my account to go back to 8 GB plan on the 22nd, and issue me a credit for the extra I would pay for this this month. That was acceptable to me, given my options, and given I'd now already spent 90 minutes of my Saturday on this.

I'll be on a plane tp Portugal precisely when this plan changes on the 22nd -- there better not be any kind of weird surprise that I'll find when I land in Portugal. I don't like the idea of a plan change while flying on a plane internationally (If an administrator here has any pull, it would be greatly appreciated if they can assign someone to make this plan change NOW for me--might save me as a Verizon customer.)

You know, the reason I've been hesitant to switch providers is that I had naively thought my 25ish years of loyalty (what's that, about $50,000 we've paid to Verizon over that time?) would come in handy at times like this when I really needed something done for me. But no, it turns out I was treated exactly as I would if I were a brand new customer.

I'm sorely disappointed and am actively looking in to other providers. At least I now know that loyalty does not matter.

SLOBIZMAN, the first thing I want to share is I apologize it took some time to craft a solution to meet your needs for the month. To share why you couldn't move to a lower data plan for the month when you're on a higher data plan and want to move to a lower one (or go from an unlimited plan to a fixed one). Your usage during that time on the higher plan can exceed what is allowed on the lower plan. That would generate an overage charge which could be quite large. To prevent that situation, we begin the lower plan at the start of your new cycle.

I'm glad my colleague could craft a plan to increase your data for the remainder of the month, and get you on the 8 GB plan for your next cycle. The changing of the plan while you're traveling, won't affect your service or any international plan/coverage you added.

We appreciate the fact you've been with us for twenty-five years. It would be disheartening to see you leave the family after all this time. Outside of changing when you can move to the 8 GB plan, what can do to help you stay with VZW?

My wife and I have been with Verizon since 2001 and we are about to change to AT&T or T-Mobile. We 'upgraded' to the unlimited plan and are paying more money for it now than we did before when we had a certain amount of data. When we ran out of data on our old plan, we would go into 'safe mode' where it would be slower but still functional (3G speeds). Now, with unlimited high speed data, we are throttled approximately 75% of the time. When we are throttled, I cannot even use the GPS on my phone since it is too slow to even find locations to navigate to. It slows us down to nothing at all. Not functional for 75% of my day.

Every time I contact Verizon, they tell me the same things. They cut and paste a form letter into the response and tell me about other plans that I could upgrade to for more money.

Not what I signed up for. Not loyal to me and my family as we have been loyal to them for almost 18 years.

Actually, "safe mode" is capped at 2G speeds and not 3G speeds.

If you are saying your "safe mode" data was "slower but still functional" you should be just fine at the above posted speeds. "Safe mode" has a speed of up to 0.128 Mbps which is a fraction of what you have listed above. I would guess you simply forgot how bad the data speed was when you were in "safe mode".

Not only that, but "safe mode" is an actual throttling of your speed where re-prioritization is completely different. When you are being re-prioritized, you data is not "slowed" to a certain speed, it is simply placed behind others whose data has not been re-prioritized. This can give the feeling of being throttled but once the data ahead of yours had gone thru, your data speed could possibly go back to normal which is not the case with "safe mode".

I too have experienced Safe Mode, and while slow it is definitely usable. It is certainly WAY better than having my connection essentially halted by re-prioritization for 5-10 minutes. It may be longer than 5-10 minutes, because I really don't know how long beyond that because I give up at that point.

Like in my post yesterday about the same thing I had speeds everywhere I travel that were in the 40Mbps then all of the sudden 3 days ago I can't even get beyond like 25kbs,in all the same areas, and my data is being throttled or de-prioritized even at 3AM. Verizon wireless customer support your problem is you guys DONT LIKE BEING CALLED OUT on your stuff.

Verizon just needs to make the data usable at all times, not throttle or de-prioitize ones data to where it is totally unusable, and when someone checks email, facebook, or tries to look something up on safari and the app times out, and tells them they are not connected to the internet because it so slow (because verizon has throttled them), and that's with 3 bars of LTE, but data is unusable, and follows people no matter where they go, no matter the time of day, whether its across town or to different town because you are throttling their data.

Unlimited data is not unlimited if it doesn't load the data and times out while trying to load said data, Its also not unlimited if it times out and apps like email, safari, facebook tells you you are not connected to the internet. We all get unlimited data does not mean unlimited speeds and that there is de-prioritized or throttling that is going to happen AT TIMES of CONGESTION or when they go over their allotment (plan depending) but when that congestion follows people from place to place and is unusable and won't load that is not unlimited data.

We understand your concern regarding your data speeds. As a frequent data user I can understand your concerns regarding the data speeds. With regard to what was stated previously you can be de-prioritized if you are over your plans set data amount. We do have other unlimited plans that provide a higher base amount like our Beyond unlimited plan with 22GB of 4G speeds and our Above unlimited plan with 75GB of data to use at 4G speeds. If you have our go unlimited plan you may experience de-prioritization more based on the network activity in that area. This is amazingly ridiculous. Same issue. In addition the customer service rep assured me this would not be the case as he claimed any congestion is rare. My phone is noticeably slower every day. So misrepresentation on top of slowness. We should have stayed in our plan an paid the overage for the few months we went over.

I switched to the unlimited because I was going over, but I will switch back because the service has deteriorated after switching (It wasn’t good before).

Without transparency, Verizon can do whatever they want and the user would not know.

Unlimited is a very bad deal.

Rafaelramireztuesta, it's important your existing Unlimited Plan meets your usage needs and that you're on the right Unlimited Plan. It's not our intention to do whatever we want and not provide you with the service you're paying for.

Just to make sure, what's the exact name of the Unlimited Plan you switched to? Is your data connection slow anywhere you might be?

Know this Verizon this business model will only lead to failure just because you're the big kid on the block doesn't mean you can't be knocked off. I myself plan to change providers as soon as I paid off my phone.
