Can I Use My Device In St Thomas And St John?

MIKJAN88

Some clarifications on using our Verizon phones on St Thomas and St John. Do we need to do anything to our phones before we go, add an international plan or change any settings? It looks like voice call are billed at $1.79 per minute. Am I correct that there is no additional charge for texting or data, it will just come off the messaging and data allotment we have on our plans? (We are traveling there by air so no cruise ship)

US Virgin Islands is domestic. Text, Data, and Calls are all on your current US plan.

From Verizon travel planner:

St John

Your device is good to go, just pick a plan.

You can use your domestic talk, text and data in the selected destination(s) at no additional charge.

Does my current plan include calls and texts between US Mainland and USVI?

Hello, The United States Virgin Islands (USVI), including Saint John and Saint Thomas, do not require an international plan. Usage in these US territories would be considered domestic usage: https://www.verizon.com/support/international-services-pricing/#virginislandsus

However, please note that usage during a cruise is not covered, and will require a Cruise Daily Pass: https://www.verizon.com/plans/international/international-travel/cruise-and-inflight/

Finally, with USVI and the British Virgin Island (BVI) being in close proximity to each other, there’s one more factor to consider. Cell phone usage in BVI would fall under international usage, and an international plan is recommended to keep you covered. You can use our International Trip Planner here for plan options for the BVI: https://www.verizon.com/plans/international/international-travel/trip-planner-tool/

For additional peace of mind, Verizon will send a free Welcome text message any time a device registers on a network while traveling outside the U.S. The message will include the rates for the country, or the included domestic allowance, and a way to contact us, if needed. Customers in the Do Not Solicit/Do Not Call list will not receive these Welcome messages. We can change this preference upon request.

UNLESS you have a travel plan because you travel all the time. Then it grabs another tower from the BVI and sure you are warned but you aren't UNwarned.  Then when you speak with a rep they tell you that USVI is international and they will "Take it to their team" Completely predatory and criminal

We apologize if you have had issues while traveling. We have a technical staff to help in these times. Were you able to report this to our technical support teams? This experience doesn't sound like one our customers have to endure often. I am sure we can get this resolved. BobbyN_VZW

We have friends that live in the USVI, both St Thomas and St John... so we visit frequently. Our phone barely have service and we always have charges after the trip. Friends that live there say there is no Verizon tower, that’s why you get charged because your phone ends up using a BVI tower if you are able to connect...

Looking for some clarification on this statement. Is there a way to use your Verizon phone and no have extra charges? All of our friends that live there use AT&T.

AT&T is selling all Caribbean to Liberty.  Puerto Rico and virgin island.  So that's going to close as an option

HJJones, it sounds like you are able to take advantage of some amazing trips. We do want to ensure that you have all of the information needed for your travels. You mentioned that the phones barely have service, are you able to place calls, send text, or use data? When you experience charges, which service are the charges for? Are you in St. John when this happens, as this is closer to the British Virgin Islands? What make and model phones do you have?  LorenB_VZW

That sounds like a fantastic trip, MIKJAN88. It’s definitely important to know what to expect before you head out and I can answer your concerns. I highly recommend logging into www.vzw.com/tripplanner so that you can double check your account specifically before any trip or in case you have a layover in your flight, but St. Thomas and St. John are both considered as domestic for talk, text and data at no additional charge. This means that calls and text and data used while you’re at those specific locations would count towards your allowance as if you where still here in the United States.

I was just in St. Thomas on a cruise ship on Feb 6th.  I had NO coverage either on the ship on or land.

Do you know if you had the correct settings in your phone turned on to make sure your device was able to connect to the international towers?

Going to St Thomas next month. What settings are needed to make my phone work? Trip planner says that my plan is good to go, but I'm not sure if I have to do anything specific with the device?

We certainly want you to be able to use your phone on your trip. We are here to help.

You would just need to ensure your phone has Roaming Settings turned ON while traveling out of the USA. Here is a link to help give you more information https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/troubleshooting-international-travel-video/

Hello EAEMNCT,

Being able to use your service while travelling out of the country is always important. What specific settings were you looking to change?

Current smart phones have a setting that does not allow your phone to use data roaming. You will have to make sure that your phone has not connected to a foreign tower by looking at the notification bar before you used to talk or text.

Unless you are at the far east end and very close to the British virgin islands there is very little chance you will connect to a non-US tower
