My husband died a few months ago. Have transferred everything I need off the phone, but want to keep the number active for about a year in case we need to answer someone or a text verification number. The phone does have a balance on it for a monthly fee for purchase of a phone. Tried the store - waited only to be told you need to call Transfer of Services. Tried calling and no one could explain the procedure to me. The woman picked up that I wanted to have both phone lines on my one phone (was told that would cost about $20). The lady I was transferred to was clueless when I asked about putting the account into my name. She was intent on solving the 2 phone lines. Finally she understood and I created/ applied for a new account. Said I lost the discounts we were getting on the phone purchases and the new costs were higher. Costing me $25/month more. I was ready to have her transfer the phone when we suddenly "got disconnected". Called back and was told by the Next Representative her information was totally false. I could not have both lines on one phone because there is a monthly balance on the old phone . She also told me it would be the same cost as having a line, not a reduced cost. She told me it would not allow the number to be transferred with an existing phone. I am so confused, while grieving the loss of my spouse. I have no idea who is telling me anything of worth. I would have never put the phones in my name (costing me $25/month more). I would have let things be until ....

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. It's really too bad Verizon is making the situation so confusing for you, but I'm speculating what's going on is that you'd have to pay off the balance on the phone before the account can be transferred to your name. As for perks being lost, etc. that sounds like a terrible business practice. Even if you wanted to simply disconnect the line, you would still get billed for the remaining balance on the phone.
Sending you some nice thoughts and hope things do get worked out for you with the phones.
I'm not a Verizon employee, just another customer trying to help.
