voice mail is asking for a mailbox number

I have switched from the iphone 4s to the iphone 6. on my iphone 4s my voicemail was setup and working just fine. now when i press the voicemail button it directly calls *86. it says "welcome to the message management system. enter the number of the person whom you wish to leave a message. if you want to access your own mailbox press pound." when i press pound it says "please enter your mailbox number". the mailbox number is not my phone number nor is it the password to access my voicemail. i have already had my password changed by the verizon support people by calling *611, and still i am unable to access my voicemail. how do i get my mailbox number or if i am unable to do that how can i delete my voicemail and re-setup my voicemail from scratch?

I want to make sure your voicemail is working correctly. Can you test to see if you still have the account by dialing your phone number from a different line? Do not answer the call, but press '#' when the call stops ringing. You will then be prompted to enter your voicemail password. Let me know if this works for you

The voicemail is routed as such: Just like a bank check, there is an account number and an routing number. The reason for the routing number is to send it to the correct bank. The same goes for your voicemail. The voicemail box is your 10 digit phone number (555-666-7777) and then with a routing number in front of it that directs it to YOUR voicemail and not someone else's. If you punch in your phone number, and it states it does not exist, then you will need to contact VZW CS to re-provision your voicemail and ensure the routing is correct.
