NEXUS 5 or else

I am planning on leaving Verizon Wireless if we, the customers, do not see an available Nexus 5 that is "approved"/"compatible" with Verizon's network. I cannot possibly be the only Verizon subscriber who is upset by the rumors. I started this thread to get a sense of how many of us would leave Verizon should a Nexus 5 not be released for Verizon.

My requests:

-No 3rd party Bloatware

-Distribution through Google Play (play.google.com)

-Unlocked bootloader (I am not encouraging people to perform functions that void warranties)

-Timely updates (the GSM Nexus gets them, why didn't the Galaxy Nexus of old?)

If Verizon fails to meet these requests then I am tempted to jump ship to a more innovative carrier. Curious, who feels like I do?

The majority of Verizon's Android Enthusiast customers including those who still have the Galaxy Nexus like myself WILL be leaving their service if they don't carry the Google Nexus 5. This will happen because the growing consensus among Android enthusiasts is that they are tired of Verizon's death grip-like control (locked bootloaders, bloatware and delayed/non-existant Android OS updates) of their Android devices. If they don't believe this, they should take a look at their own community forums and those of the most popular Android tech blogs on the internet (simply do a Google search with the terms "leaving verizon" "nexus 5" and you'll see what I mean). For many of them, the detriment of loosing grandfathered unlimited data, like myself, will no longer compel them to stay on Verizon's service. Simply carrying the Google Nexus 5 won't be enough though. Unlike the Galaxy Nexus, It has to be UNTOUCHED by their usual Android device business practices, the way Google meant it to be. This post shouldn't come as a threat, but more of a heads-up, in case they haven't been paying attention/listening to what your customers want.

All good points, although if they offer a "pure" Nexus device, I won't care if the bootloader is locked or not.

Additionally, I have a feeling Verizon will pull the unlimited data rug out from under us at some point. (Just a feeling, not based on any facts or rumors)

I've started pricing alternative carriers, and I'm ready to move my family (we're all due for "upgrades" but Verizon doesn't carry a compelling device).

I agree that the days of grandfathered unlimited data are numbered. That should make jumping ship off of Verizon that much easier though. What they don't realize is that we, savvy Android enthusiasts, not only make or influence the cell phone purchasing decisions in most of our households, but the we also influence those purchasing decisions of our less-than technology savvy family, friends and even coworkers. Verizon won't take the discontent of our tech-savvy vocal minority seriously until it hurts their bottom line. So if we really want to affect change for the better within Verizon, we'll have to take as much business away from them as possible. Tell all your Android addict family, friends and coworkers. More and more people need to be educated on what the Nexus program is and how it benefits the security and longevity (in terms of OS updates) of their cell phone's usefulness.

Another excellent point. Now that I think of it, a lot of people at work come to me for tech advice. If they aren't dead set on an iPhone, I steer them toward the Nexus program and nothing else.

I am in agreement with you all on this.

Unfortunately I recently finished moving my family from Sprint for obvious reasons and the move, due to activation costs, definitely comes at a price. I'd love to say that I'm moving my family off of Verizon now but I'll need to wait until each of the 3 contracts expire.

When I came on with Verizon 11 months ago I purchased what was basically their premium phone, Razr Maxx HD, only to find shortly thereafter that 1 GB of ram memory just is insufficient for quick and smooth operation along with all the included bloatware. As I did NOT want to risk losing my warranty on the phone by rooting it I stuck with it until about a month ago when the phone operation just became unbearably slow. Now I find that although I've successfully rooted, the bootloader is locked and will likely remain so indefinitely.

So I then turned to the hope of purchasing a NEXUS 5 once it was released so that I could make use of the Verizon network with a phone with decent performance with having to take out a mortgage only to find out that the chances of Verizon carrying the phone is next to nil.

If we don't get the option of using a Nexus 5 on Verizon within the next year then I too will likely jump off the Verizon ship once I've fulfilled the 2 year contract agreement. Those no contract mobile phone agreements are starting to look better all the time.

I agree 100%. Verizon treats their customers like shit, has a poor selection of phones, and the phones they do get are crippled by their bloatware. The only thing they have going for them is their coverage. Luckily I've just moved to a city that is covered by everyone so if Verizon doesn't get the Nexus 5, I'm definitely switching.

Been using my GNex for the past 2 years.

Already looking at my options. Knowing how shitty Verizon is, I don't expect the Nexus 5 to be available for the loyal Android users. Its almost amazing how Verizon was all about Android and Google when the iPhone wasn't around but the minute the iPhone GRACES VZW's lineup they immediately turn their backs on the millions of people that stuck with them and basically made the company skyrocket past AT&T.

Keep worrying about your bottom line Verizon, you're going to lose 9 lines on my end the day the Nexus 5 launches.

I am looking into doing that as well. Even IF the Nexus 5 came to Verizon I'm pretty sure it will be loaded with...you guessed it...more crap we don't use that takes up space. I love my Note 2 but hate the Samsung bloat. Obviously a lot of people are tired of it all! All there is to do now is wait until the reviews come out!

I am going to either leave to get the NEXUS 5 or a Moto X via Moto maker. I am thinking about leaving no matter what because what is the point of have a nexus phone if Verizon won't update the software in a timely fashion?

No. I've never had a problem with the service Verizon has provided. I get better service than any other Sprint, T-Mobile and even AT&T owners that I know in my area, I don't live in the country, I live in a metropolitan area where I know all services get good coverage. I get service in buildings that are dead zones for the other three carriers. Within a few months there will be a new phone with better specs and will become the new craze, that's just how technology is. So I don't see whats the point of leaving to get a phone that will be outdone soon after its release. Bloatware is annoying yes, but you can hide it. Does take up alot of memory but that is remedied with phones equipped with expandable storage and wireless storage. And I don't really care about updates. I stopped updating my phone after my phone was pretty much useless after updating from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. It was fixed for the most part after the Jellybean update but the best experiance I had was with gingerbread. (I know people complain about slow Verizon updates, but to go from gingerbread, to ICS, to jellybean within a matter of 2 years kind of makes me wonder how many updates you really need) Just think the version the phone comes with is the best to keep.

Also I forgot to mention, Rivc55, hiding still takes up space on something I purchased and own. Yes I'm a month to month customer so I truly own my phone, no lousy subsidies.

What kind of customer am I? You seem to know alot about what I am... why dont you tell me? Verizon has the biggest network and the most customers. I doubt the people leaving to get a Nexus 5 will make a dent in their profits or change how they operate. You wanting to leave Verizon for a phone (which previous versions havent been all that great) is your perogative and I respect that decision. I was just answering your question "who feels like I do?'

Fair enough but I also think you should reconsider you opinion about updates, they bring many benefits such as improved security. Also to say the previous versions were not that great is somewhat surprising considering the demand for them.

Also, manufacturers have been trending away from not allowing expandable storage (moto x, DROID mini, ultra and Maxx to name just a few) so I must disagree with you on the expandable storage point. The industry wants to be cloud based and limiting memory on the device encourages this.

Also, yes, your lack of care for updates is quite telling of the type of customer you are. It says you just want your phone to work out of the box and might be inclined to ignore future benefits that could be added. You also mentioned the move from gingerbread to ICS, that was already quite some time ago and the hardware of the era wasn't what it is today. Android has improved quite a lot since then. It's not an insult, you just don't sound like a geek and that's the type of user the Nexus is geared towards. Don't be sore in the rear, it's OK, I just would like to see a phone that is on the bleeding edge. I value security updates and I value constant feature improvement. Verizon probably should too, the network is wonderful, however the phones they offer are the worst.

I am willing to agree, i just want a pure AOSP style device. We aren't allowed to talk about the bootloader in detail in these forums but for legitimate development. I can't go any farther without voiding house rules so... there's that.

As long as Verizon is in this 3G/4G LTE phase, there won't be timely updates for the Android phones even the Nexus ones. There are a lot of steps behind the scenes for CDMA, that do not exist for GSM, which is why the GSM Galaxy Nexus had such timely updates. Compared to other devices on Verizon, the Galaxy Nexus updates came quicker than any other device I had previously. First to have ICS on Verizon and first to have Jellybean on Verizon.

When we get to LTE only devices, there is a chance we'll have the freedom on Verizon that people have on AT&T - but not until then. Bloatware is going to happen. There are ways to limit it. I believe the Verizon Galaxy Nexus had at least 2 bloatware apps, but that is far better than anything recently.

I love the idea of the Nexus 5, but let's be honest the Nexus phones have been lacking in at least one aspect through each generation. Usually it is the camera.

I used to be a crazy Nexus enthusiast, but these days I rock a Note 3 with Nova Launcher. Nova Launcher will give me the stock feel while still leaving in the awesome features of the Note 3. It's the stupid Touchwiz animations that slow down the Galaxy phones anyway, and Nova gets rid of that.

When Kit-Kat launches, I'll just enjoy it on my Nexus 7 first. NBD.

I absolutely agree with the Nexus 5 "Or else".. Just expressing my contempt that Verizon won't carry the next Nexus that my wife and I are both planning to move to.

I'm actually OK with paying a bit more for Verizon service because of the awesome coverage in most places. One thing I can't stand however, is not being able to use the phone I want. If they aren't interested in ensuring the best phones come under their umbrella, then I have to leave their umbrella.

Since that's not the case, we're going to have to take our family plan and leave Verizon and go to a carrier who will carry the Nexus 5 for us.

I'm not so much worried about Nexus 5 as I am with Verizon other new phones. If i decide to buy say the new Droid Maxx will it get the latest versions of Android in a timely manner. Why does Verizon have to have so much bloatware on their devices as to interfere with Android updates and limit its customers, and why if I pay so much money for a new phone and services with this company why are we as consumers left out of Android updates..Verizon get it together, your service is second to none right now, your coverage is great & your customer service specialist are wonderful and polite. Your business model should be to keep as many customers as to make more money.

Lower your plan pricing, stop hindering Google Android services and give your customers the phones they want with the plans they need at an affordable rate. Get rid of the unnecessary apps that no one will use that take up space, bloatware is costing you. T-Mobil may not have great coverage but you could learn a thing or two about the plans they offer with the phones everyone loves and needs. If you make your customers happy you'll continue to make a profit, and this customer will be with you for life.

Called the sales department tonight - not only were the poor call centers not given an official response on how Verizon is not supporting/selling the - arguably - best phone on the market as of today, but they didn't even KNOW about it, or about 4.4 release.

This makes me feel like Verizon is going the way of RIM - they are out of touch with the consumer, and out of touch with the technology they claim to be experts within. Google Nexus has time and again been proven to be a great phone, at a great price, and unfortunately non-Verizon time and again. The Galaxy Nexus was a joke, the red headed step child of the family, and now 5 full releases have gone by with EVERY other 'big' carrier being on board. Even AT&T - who won't sell it - still are allowing it on their network.

Verizon however will not allow any device that they don't sell.

So let's take a step back and think for a minute. Yelling and complaining is certainly going to get attention, but what would make us happy that Verizon is likely to do?

For me, I'd like to see all/some of these from Verizon

Acknowledge that this was a bad choice for their business model of being the 'best' carrier
Allow non-Verizon branded hardware on their network
Release a non-bastardized Verizon branded Nexus 5
1. This means no bloatware / gets updates the same as other Nexus 5's
Issue special discounts to users who have to wait due to Verizon's inability to satisfy popular demand.

Furthermore, I expect a Verizon representative to answer the people who sign their checks why this even has to be discussed, and on their forum rather than in their call center. That means someone should at the MINIMUM respond to this thread, or post a Sticky on the Nexus 5 debacle. Really if they want to prove they're the best, they should be contacting each of us individually for not only apologizing, but offering some boon.

I'd also like them to respect their employees enough to not allow them to be blindsided by upset customers calling in - it's clear from my conversation tonight that their support centers knew nothing about this, and the girl - Ashley - went above and beyond in an attempt to find SOMETHING, including offering me information on when other Verizon phones might be getting KitKat (as this is a big reason many of us want a Nexus product)

Ironically, she said within 90 days - so no big deal HTC One owners, you'll get 4.4 some time in 2014. Because, that's about on par for Verizon's inability to release updates.

For me, this goes beyond the usual complaints people have on Verizon. Yeah, they're more expensive, yeah their support can have issues (all the networks can), and yeah sometimes their firmware upgrades for Android they take an extra 10 months to release because of their 'extensive' testing might still cause your phone to reboot randomly (Any other Thunderbolt rebooters here?) - but all that is mostly normal. Not supporting the flagship phone of Google when all their competitors do? That's just bad business, and in my opinion an inexcusable one.

Bottom line, Verizon can expect to lose another two lines over this, and my own has been on their books since 2002.

Verizon... That's what it is. Its a humiliation. I love the service coverage, but I describe my experience as being a necessary evil. I consume a lot of data, so it makes sense to stay. I won't leave until I must. You get my money for now.

So, this humiliation... This hoping you will relent and do whatever you must to correct the nexus debacle from two years ago.. only for you to not. I believed it would work out, I really did. Now, I'm disappointed, dissatisfied, and disgruntled. What's worse is in justified. Google says they're working with you? Who cares.

Let me spell this out: we are friends with benefits.

I have no feelings for you. I wanted an iPhone, you took forever. I got a droid. Then I wanted a nexus, you took forever. I waited. I wanted this nexus, I waited. You failed. In between, you took my unlimited future, which I fully understand. You also kept me from using my device as intended, which does not make sense. No Google wallet... Yes bloatware... Yes. You don't get me or any of us. Your plan with iPhone going well?

We are your hope, your loyalists. You treat us like plebs. You're in the States and nowhere else to mention. You've got nothing to keep you at the top BUT us. Most reliable what? Make up your mind, please.

Like many, you will take away my data, thus ending this mess for me. You would be doing me a favor since I don't really like your business practices. The problem for you is not the money you lose from me, but everyone I take with me. My parents,my friends, my family of course, and my praise. Market studies show that leaving with a bad taste almost guarantees you'll not see me again for a while... Like try 10G LTE.

T-Mobile doesn't have great service, but they'll get better as sprint will. Maybe a new provider will show? Who knows.Your place is challenged. You got into it with Apple before losing the iPhone. You're prepared to lose all of us because no one will ever find a new way to move data... Yeah, okay.

As I've said in previous post, this was the last straw for me. They've already lost 4 lines from my family members and now there about lose a 5th one and hopefully more. It is so unbelievably stupid of the verizon asshats to not want this phone. But whatever, atleast I won't have to worry about locked bootloaders, horrible bloatware, scared to take an ota and dealing with verizon. The nexus life is a good life.

This is very disappointing, I can not tell you how annoyed I am that the new NEXUS5 I just killed myself to go purchase wont work on Verizon, the supposed largest phone companies lines. I am leaving Verizon. FUCK YOU VERIZON

Just got off the phone with Verizon for a second day, hoping for an update.

I was given a very polite answer that yet again, they have been given no information on it.

This time though, I was given this address:

I plan on writing a letter expressing my views in as diplomatic way as possible to the reasons why - unless I hear of a very, very good reason why I should not - I will be purchasing this device when it starts to ship (roughly 2 weeks away) and not look back.

Some key points I will be bringing up (and encourage others to do as well in their departure from Verizon) will include:

Verizon's inability to provide succinct information to concerned customers to their lack of true 'leading edge' phones
- *Note - phones that are not rife with bugs, glitches, or Verizon software or UI's that destroy the Android OS
The unprofessional way they have armed (Or, not armed) their support staff to deal with concerned customers who want an answer
Why Verizon continues to refuse to support a phone that offers no requirement for a contact, or that costs a high retail cost
Verizon supports the Apple iOS in a fashion that it will not support Android, that being a 'pure' OS with no excessive UI or "Bloat Ware" that the Nexus represents
Verizon - without fail - is always behind the curve on updates to it's devices (android).
- Even the most current phones have to wait between 90-120, even 150 days for the next 'update' due to supposed stringent testing and certifications
  - Despite this, frequently the updates still cause issues, making the extra wait seemingly pointless
    - An example of this is HTC's Thunderbolt random reboot bug, and the Rezound's random bugs
  - It seems that more often than not, it is to ensure that their bloatware is compatible and also updated
- Apple devices are of course excluded from this, as they always get the updates Apple approves
Verizon has substantially higher costs than other carriers with no real benefit to consumers.
- It would seem that rather than investing in better phones, this money often goes to either share holders in a bottom line, or to pay the likely large salary of support for applications such as "VZ Navigator" which is installed on phones with a much better 'free' application from Google, or applications that in turn get Verizon more money, and are forced down peoples throats by forcing them to be installed.
  - IF we wanted them, we'd buy them off the Play store like we do all our other applications we buy. But we really wouldn't, as they offer no real benefit over other available applications
- While Verizon does seem to invest heavily into it's network hardware, it is quickly being shadowed by their competitors.
Their support model is good most of the time, but there are plenty of stories of users having issues and it taking weeks to get resolutions
- I am a case in point, having spent literally over 40 hours on the phone with Verizon last summer, and going through four replacement devices which all had issue after issue (refurbished phones)
- When a user has an issue beyond that which a normal support or customer service employee can resolve, they are either forced to work day after day up their chain of support to get to someone who can do something about it, or are forced to write a letter via snail-mail complaining to someone who may, or may not respond in time to keep a customer.

So... I feel a bit better now that I've put this all down. Anyone have further thoughts beyond those I listed on why - from a polite and business perspective - Verizon is failing?

I left the coveted unlimited data on verizon for the nexus 5. Ive got it running on a temp number from T-mobile right now just waiting out my last month with verizon to avoid ETF. T-mobile unlimited everything $70 a month no contract + nexus 5 = NO BRAINER! Good bye verizon.

The only reason Apple is a clean OS on Verizon's Network is because Apple refused to allow Verizon to add the Bloatware to the phone. In Apples contract they have it specified that if bloatware is added they will call the contract null and void and they will NOT ship any iPhones to Verizon. Apple also does NOT allow Verizon to push their updates as they retain sole authority on the OS being pushed so if there is an issue on the phone Apple can fix the issue, push an update to all apples and it is done. Going the Verizon way it would take 4 months for that software push to hit any phones.

yea I've been loving my galaxy nexus. there is no way I'd go to an iphone or a bloatware android. the OS on the nexus is so clean and beautiful. my contract is up january 1st and without a nexus 5 or GPE HTC One on verizon I'm out. The service might be great, but att or t mobile are good enough in my area to warrant not getting angry every time I wake my phone and see that verizon crap on my phone. The only other option is to stay on verizon and void out a warranty on a brand new HTC one and convert it to a google play phone. Ditch a warranty to use a phone that they should support? no thank you.

Yes, I still regret not being able to purchase and use the Nexus 5 on my Verizon account and yes I still think it was a bad move for Verizon to make this decision. Since I recently completed a staged move of my family from another provider to Verizon it just was not going to be an option for us to leave for yet another carrier.

I guess out of desperation I visited my local Verizon store and calmly expressed my displeasure with all of this and was surprised that I was presented with a great deal on a new phone. I was still a year away from my upgrade and yet I came away with a new LG G2 for less money (and yes a new 2 year contract) than if I had purchased an N5.

Now, BEFORE I get lambasted here, I FULLY realize that instead of a clean, pure Google Kit Kat OS, I instead am saddled with Android 4.2.2 and the THICK LG skin which definitely bogs down the device to an extent and detracts from the pure "Google Experience". Still, I now have the phone from which the Nexus 5 was created, is fast by any standard, leaves my old Razr Maxx HD in the dust, has a 13 MP camera and vastly superior battery life to the N5. Slow phone issue resolved.

If you are willing and able to move to a new carrier so that you can get that Nexus 5 then do so. That is the best way to communicate to Verizon the error of their ways and convince them to change. Hopefully in time they will change and start showing a little more love to the Android enthusiast community and decide to carry the N5. But until then I'm satisfied enough with how I was treated at the local store, the option I was given and to still be on arguably the nation's best wireless network.

While that sounds normal enough, and you reiterate a lot of the points we all have raised against Verizon, with more and more companies paying people to post to their forums/products reviews, I'll say the jury's still out on whether I believe a guy that says, bro I just went to their store and signed a new contract and it wasn't so bad.

I wish I was being paid by Verizon to post here but that is not the case.

The argument could be made that I was bribed with a shiny new phone at a great price but it did cost me a new 2 year contract which will end only a couple months after the contract for my son's phone expires.

I too was surprised by the in-store experience. It was the first time I purchased a phone in a brick and mortar store in some time and it was a surprisingly good and painless experience.

Again, we're all free to choose who we do business with. Exercise your right to choose another provider if you wish to do so.

The sad thing is that I have an unlimited data plan and I was willing to give that up for a Droid Maxx, but Verizon sales reps would not cut me a deal and I would end up paying more for 5 GB of data than I would for unlimited Data. What the heck Verizon!? Are you trying to keep people on unlimited data plans or lose customers??? Where's the incentive!??!? So now I'm stuck with my 2 year old Galaxy Nexus unless I pay for the droid full price or switch to another carrier in which I am all for the Nexus 5!!! You really have to wonder though if anyone from Verizon actually reads these comments because with so many angry customers it's boggling why they don't fix all of there poor practices.

I have been due for an upgrade since 8.13. But I waited for the Nexus 5. Now they don't carry it. They are more than happy to sell iphones with no bloatware but for some reason Android gets the second class treatment from them. Verizon! We don't want your crappy bloatware. We want an OS from people who know how to create software.

I went to a Verizon store today about to cave and get a MotoX. 50 minute wait to have someone "help" me. I already know what I want. I don't need your help. How about you hire appropriate staff to deal with the volume of customers. So I called the next closest Verizon store. Sorry we only have the 16 mb MotoX not the 32.

The fact is there is no phone I want right now other than the Nexus 5. I will stick with my Razer Max until my wife's contract is over then I will buy two unlocked Nexus 5's and pick another carrier.

Its time for a revolution on how we get cell service. I'm tired of bloatware, locked phones and contracts and then I can't even get what I want!

I just wanted to let it be known that I have acquired my Nexus 5 and said goodbye to Verizon wireless. I paid the ETF(s) and took my service to AT&T. At this point this is a carrier that has refused to seek out open devices even though they are on a 700 Mhz Block C network that we would all assume foster that option. They have dragged their feet activating Nexus 7's, another example of their unwillingness to cooperate.

"Licensees offering service on spectrum subject to this section shall not deny, limit, or restrict the ability of their customers to use the devices and applications of their choice on the licensee's C Block network..."

I realize there is no incentive financially for Verizon to do this. I think that working with the wireless industry to support open devices everywhere is an ideal that will prevail if we make it so. The benefits are a consumer win, we can take a phone that is supported by multiple carriers and be free to choose who to give our business to. The Nexus 5 is one of the few devices that come close to supporting all US carriers and also being a more open device.

I can understand technical limitations, however a Nexus 5 on Verizon Wireless was/is possible. The phone is essentially a LG G2 internally and does have CDMA support for Sprint. It couldn't be much harder to build a Nexus 5 with Verizon Wireless support.

For though who are curious, you can sign up with AT&T and bring lines in from different regional area codes. I was also able to get service without a contract. AT&T LTE service, while not as pervasive, is quite good in the Richmond, VA area and surrounding counties. I can also say I had good LTE service in the Charlotte, NC and Winston Salem, NC areas. My plan was a GoPhone $60 plan with unlimited voice/text and 2 GB of data. You can buy an addition GB of data for $10.

I can say that I do prefer Verizon Wireless service and haven't had any issues with them from a customer support perspective. I have to stick with my convictions here. If you are going to say you are an open network, be an open network. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2277399,00.asp

i am currently using Verizon and very loyal to Google phones. I had a Nexus one with T-Mobile, then a Galaxy-Nexus with Verizon. I wan not happy with the phone's ability to switch from WiFi to phone signal.

In case the LTE does not work I am also investigating alternative carriers. Does anyone recommend T-Mobile? Years ago, the coverage in the suburban Philadelphia area was spotty, but thing may have changed. Does anyone have experience with carriers in the Philadelphia area?

Today, I read some articles saying that the N5 will work on the Verizon network using LTE. Has anyone actually tried thi in the Philadelphia area? I read that Verizon uses two LTE bands 13, and 4 and that the Nexus 5 does work using Band 4 LTE. I have no idea which band is being used locally, and went to the Verizon store, but they simply siad the N5 will not work on their network. Has anyone actually tried this?

I just purchased a Nexus 5 through google, it will take several weeks to arrive. Verizon is my current carrier an I have a Galaxy-Nexus. I am a loyal Google customer, starting with the Nexus one.

I read that although Verizon does not support the Nexus 5 it is possible to use it on Verizon LTE network if using band 4. Apparently Verizon uses LTE band 13, and band 4 in different markets. Does anyone know which band is being used in the Philadelphia market? I went to the Verizon store and they did not know.

Has anyone in Philadelphia tried to use a Nexus 5 via Verizon? If so, does it work at all?

I anticipate that I will need to switch carriers, and lost about $150 to get out of my Verizon contract. I really don't want to, but if Verizon does not support this does anyone know whether T-Mobile or AT&T is a better choice in the Philadelphia metropolitan area?

The Nexus 5 will not work with Verizon as it does not support the CDMA bands that Verizon uses. CDMA is currently required to activate phones on their network as they do not currently use LTE for voice. When you make a call on VZW, phones drop down to CDMA for voice. This is similar to AT&T dropping down to HSPA when making calls. Hopefully we will see some VoLTE implementation in 2014 for US carriers.

I would also like the join in the hate that Verizon doesn't support the Nexus 5. I was really looking forward to the phone because it's a good phone and most importantly because it would let me switch phones without having to give up my unlimited data. Kind of getting fed up with verizon trying to squeeze every penny out of us. Although I'm not in need of a phone right now so I won't switch yet, if for whatever reason they decide to get rid of our unlimited data then I would definitely switch. I see no reason why a smaller company like sprint can afford to keep its unlimited and Verizon can't.

I think it says a lot about Sprint that they have unlimited data and are cheaper, way cheaper for a single line - and they still don't have the number of users of AT&T or Verizon. The Sprint network is terrible. Hopefully after the LTE rollout, it gets better - its been a joke for so long though.

They don't have an expansive network to maintain. They also don't have the customer base like Verizon does so less saturation. They have also consistently lost customers this year. They were also sold to Softbank this year.

Their network capacity isn't that large and from what I have read from Sprint forums they don't offer more than 3mbps is majority of the US.

T-Mobile is on the same boat. They almost sold to AT&T, and Sprint tried to buy them to increase their network capacity and size for a steal of a price. They took a different approach and drop subsidization and upgrades yet offer unlimited data(Doesn't Verizon do this now? Aside from still offering unlimited data to new customers).

This doesn't include MAJORITY of the world doesn't offer unlimited data on their 4G networks and rarely on their 3G networks long before US carriers started dropping theirs.

Unlimited data will come back but it won't be anytime soon. VoLTE+ has to happen, and carriers have to drop their legacy networks to even have a chance.

Ok idk if this will help or if this has been previously posted but here is the up to date knowledge i have on this situation. As we all know the phone is more than capable of working on verizon with the internal specs it came with. I have spoken to reps and have gotten a general consensus that people may be able to go to stores and have the phones manually activated, it may or may not work as there is still no set protocol(of course because this phone is not officially supported) THAT being said, i was told that things are currently being worked out, and should see some sort of statement/solution(hopefully) from verizon soon. This probably has something to do with what google has said that they are planning something with verizon(another speculation but has to be some form of a nexus 5 compromise(where the phone gets its updates handled through google, but will have the software verizon puts on it) again speculation). In any case one thing i do know for sure and has been re iterated many times is that once verizon abandons cdma and goes VoLTE, there is really no way to keep phones of all types from being activated on their network
