Problems with update March 2013

Since my phone updated with the newest Android version this afternoon I have had nothing but problems. Apps will freeze and the back and home button does not work. If that isn't happening, you open an app and it immediately closes. Example, Open Facebook, immediately closes. Open Text messages, they immediately close, open dialer to make a call, it immediately closes. Each time one of those apps close, little icons appear on the screen for every one of the successive apps that have been opened. Currently my phone is useless. I can't call, text, or browse. What the heck is going on and is there a fix. I have already restarted it twice. This update has destroyed my phone!

I am sorry to hear of your problems. The reason that I sought out this site was my own unhappiness with this update. I guess that I should be happy that my problem is minor compared to yours. I have lost my email notification of receipt of new emails as well as the ability to sync up 3 different email accounts. Fortunately, I am able to press the manual update button and have any new emails downloaded. Has anyone else experienced this problem on a Galaxy SIII?

It is obvious that there are a lot of problems that are surfacing with regards to bugs in this update. I wish that there was an option available to revert back to the state prior to the update. Shame on Verizon and Samsung for releasing such garbage.

I updated my phone this evening and lost everything due to the update not completing. Spent an hour with Tech support who eventually made me wipe out my phone. I lost over 1000 pictures because now it will not recognize my sd card. When I informed the tech support about it he said oh you need to call Motorola to figure that out. Thanks for nothing Verizon...you can be sure that I am gonna start looking for a new cell phone carrier. I cannot believe I pay almost $200 a month and all I got was a oh sorry.

Doing a factory reset should not have touched the SD card. Have you taken the card out and tried to read it on a computer? That is the 1st thing I would do.

I am also having email issues since the last update - same as you describe, in that my emails aren't functioning like they used to. I have three accounts synced to the Galaxy SIII, two of them now require manual updates to get new emails and the primary email account doesn't download at all now.

I am having numerous issues as well. I receive text messages today that were sent over the weekend and the ones I have sent haven't been received or are very late as well. My phone is super slow and it almost drags when i touch different apps or go online for anything. It is horrible....They really need to push out a bug fix SOON!!

I have a Droid Razr and the updated took place Friday evening. My issues are with wi-fi connections. My wi-fi connection at home is fine, but I can't connect at work (WPA2 security, which worked perfectly on Friday). I also cannot connect to local public wi-fi spots ( I have not been to a store or restaurant to try connecting there). Also I used to have 4g at home, now the 4g is non existent and my 3g signal at work (20 miles from my home) is hit or miss.

I have unchecked the box to "avoid poor signals". I have unplugged the work router and shut down my phone and then started both back up. The work wi-fi signal strength is full and it tries to connect but never secures the connection. My co-works both have iphones and their wi-fi connection is fine and mine worked Friday so I know it is from this recent update.

Yes my signal is totally hit and miss and it seems to be way worse at home with or without Wi-Fi

Im having the same problems. My phone now won't download my email, when I click email it tells me no message when I do have messages. It vibrates every time I get a message from facebook and I had that turned off, it is still turned off but still vibrates. How do I fix all of this. ?????

I lost all of my contacts and phone numbers due to this update that no one was told about ,,, they just did it! I have an LG that I use for business and I can't believe it just wiped out all of my contacts. I am STILL adding those contacts that I am missing. I wish we could go back to the version BEFORE this update. It is a piece of crap Verizon.

I've basically lost all my networks. Voice is hit or miss (usually missing), and I haven't connected to any mobile data since this update ran last night...only wifi. I have a Droid 4.

Verizon-- you should really test these things before you mess up everyone's phones. In case you haven't worked it out, for many of us our cells are our only phone, so your updates screwing with them is seriously not ok.

As an IT consultant for a company that almost exclusively uses Droid Razr phones, I can honestly say the update
has been a disaster. The update is causing numerous issues. Users so far have reported:

Phone calling people at random.

No email notifications after update

SIM card error (that was from my personal phone, luckily it only happened once and a reboot fixed it)

Lost all speed dial numbers except one.

And, while probably not a bug, unless the user is careful, the phone will automatically turn on wireless which of course is a battery killer.

OS updates will change things on you, it is just something to get used to. Not that it should, but things have been changed in every OS update that I have done on my smartphones. You may have to check your email settings, notifications, etc to make sure they are correct.

I have the Droid Razr...I am having problems syncing my Facebook photo contacts in my favorite widget. The contacts show under individual contacts but not in the widget. I have uninstalled facebook and tried to sync them again with no luck. This upgrade was inadvertently distributed a few months ago and I had the same issue. I too was referred by Verizon to Motorola. Motorola was unable to fix the problem and replaced my phone. The replacement phone had to previous ICS system.

Any suggestions??? Something so simple should not be such a BIG problem!

I have checked all my email settings, everything is set right, still no email. I can send it, but not receive it. Facebook works fine. I can't turn off the vibration either and none of those are clicked on. It used to make one sound for mail and one for facebook. Now it only vibrates on facebook with no email. I won't upgrade any of my phones again. I love this phone, it has not given me any problems till this update. I will be looking for a new phone in June. Im going to take it to a Verizon store and see if they can fix the problem.

I have the same issue with wi-fi only its my home wi-fi that I can't connect to since the software update. I tried everything - rebooting my router, resetting my phone but nothing works. Took my phone to the local Verizon Wireless store and it connected to their wi-fi no problem but it will not connect to my home wi-fi. Worked just fine before the upgrade and my wife's phone (same Motorola Droid Razr as mine) connects to home wi-fi just fine. She has not applied the software update to her phone yet, and she will not apply it until we figure out how to fix my problem. Can anyone out there help?

If your router has settings for b/g/n, have you tried setting it to b/g only or g only?

Have you ensured that the router's firmware is up to date?

Have you tried clearing the system cache? I was having problems with an app closing with errors sometimes, and other times not giving an error. I cleared the system cache, and the app works flawless now. Clearing the system cache will not bother any settings on the phone, nor will it do a factory reset.

Please follow the steps right along, if you miss one, or don't choose the right option, you could wipe the phone.In step 5, I held the volume down key down for about a second or 2, and then pressed the volume up key along with the volume down key together for about 4-5 seconds. When I released them, the menu came up.

- Power the phone down.

- Hold the volume up and down and power key down all at the same time until you see the Boot Mode Selection Menu. This should happen within a couple of seconds.

- Press the volume down key until "Recovery" is highlighted. Press the volume up key to select.

- Wait until you see a triangle with an exclamation point in it.

- Press and hold the volume down key. While doing that, press and hold the volume up key then release them. This should put you into the Android system recovery.

- Press the volume down key until wipe cache partition is highlighted.

- Press the power button to select. You will be brought back to the Android system recovery utility when it is complete.

- Press the power button to select "reboot system now". Wait for the phone to boot.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was able to clear system cache, but I still can't connect to my wi-fi. I'll hang on to these instructions in case I need to clear cache in the future...Thanks again...

Is there a way to delete the update before you install it? It downloaded, but I keep telling it to wait until later to install. If I knew where it was, I would delete it.

Any help would be appreciated. I have the Droid Razr

Just got notified by my phone, (Maxx HD) that the update to 4.1.2 was available. Rebooted the phone and then told the update to go ahead and install.

It took a while because we have 4G here in Hawaii, but the valley where I live is still stuck on 3G. So I just let it take its time. It took about 10 minutes to download and then rebooted on its own. During the reboot it indicated that it was optimizing my 91 apps. After that in told me that the update installed correctly and so far everything appears to be working as before. I haven't tried everything yet but if I do come across any issues I will come back and post them here. But.... no news is good news!

I remain, patiently waiting for the release of my next phone in the summer of 2014.

I'm not sure about that, but I did find out why my phone can't connect to my home wi-fi. I have one of the older routers which is not supported by the updated software. Interestingly enough, my old router is a Verizon DSL router so Verizon is replacing the router with a newer model that is supported by the new software. The old modem/router is a Westell Versalink 327W and is one of 8 routers that are not supported. Here's the complete list I received from Verizon Wireless:

1.) Westell VersaLink 327W

3.) Netgear DG834GT

4.) Netgear DG934G (Sky Version)

5.) Linksys WRTP54G

I'm sorry to hear of the problems others are having with the new update.

I just updated my Razr HD and though it did take a while to download and update, everything seems to be working flawlessly.

From what I can tell, several of the updates should be generally transparent -- Google Security patches, a data roaming fix, etc.

My phone seems to be working great and I haven't encountered any difficulties yet. One thing that does puzzle me, though, is this supposed fix, which I can't verify:

"Wallpaper options are shown when home screen icons are selected"

Huh? When I select a home screen icon, it launches the associated software as always. When I press and hold an unoccupied area of a screen, it does show wallpaper options, but it has always done that. Maybe I am confusing "select" with "tap"?

This update has been nothing short of a disaster on my RAZR Maxx. Aside from apps disappearing and other nuisances, my signal strength is virtually nil. I've lived in the same place for years and always had great 3G and 4G reception. Since the update, virtually every call gets dropped at some point in the conversation. Incoming calls often go right to voicemail because there is no network signal. Two other family members with same device, living in major cities with (formerly) excellent connectivity are experiencing the same issue of erratic or no network signal and dropped calls. I'm using the stock ROM. I also use LTE On/Off to allow toggling between 3G and 4G, but the erratic connectivity is on both networks. Has anyone experienced this or can shed some light on the issue? Verizon doesn't seem to have an answer.

Have you tried turning off the phone, removing the SIM card, waiting a few minutes, then replacing the SIM card and turning the phone back on? Maybe having the SIM reconnect with the network will help with the signal (maybe not, but it's worth a try).

Thanks for the suggestion and the quick response. Unfortunately, I've tried removing/replacing the SIM card, rebooting, airplane on/off, etc. I hate having to preface every conversation with, "Just to let you know, I'm going to lose my connection, so be prepared". Since this is my only phone line and I depend on it, these latest issues are very troublesome. I've never had an issue with Verizon until now.

I have the Droid Razr. Since this last update (Jelly Bean), I cannot get 3G or 4G service without being at home, with the phone connected to my home's wi-fi. Any place else, I have no service. Just a gray bar. I also get the error message saying something about "Data roaming. You've lost data connectivity because you.... (I can't read the rest of the message). I also cannot run any of my apps. I can't run Facebook, or even Weather Bug. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

I am having connection issue when I am usin WIFI and other problems. Including that my phone will randomly not have service at all and it will randomly shut off. Please figure something out this is ridiculous VERIZON!!!!!!!!!

i have a droid 4 and got an update this morning and it dont even power on now,,it is dead,,plug the charger in and get the first boot up screen and it just sits there,, if i plug it into the usb charger on the computer i get just the green light constantly on,,nothing i have tried has had any success. when the update started to install it had the droid on the screen and said it would be done in about 20 minutes,,yeah i dont think so,,

I've read many of the posts, but can't follow any of the fixes--all of which start with powering down.

My screen has been solid with the message "Downloading . . . Do not turn off Target" for 4 or five hours.

I can't do anything even to clear the screen or power down.

i will be going to the nearest verizon store here sometime today,, my

girlfreinds phone updated and did ok,,it was a software upgrade,,hers

started this am,,but i have no idea why mine did what it did,,i got the lil

droid robot doing his thing and said it would be about 20 minutes,,the

screen went black and hasnt been on since,,so idk whats up with it,,i get

back from verizon i will resend the results

Good luck with that. I've had my phone just a couple of months. Got an android update and it locked my phone altogether. Nothing has worked that both Verizon and Motorola support offered. Verizon is sending me a factory LIKE NEW phone. I'm pissed.

Still no email and it still vibates even though that is turned off. My son is going to look at it tonight and see if he can get my email back and stop the vibration. I also lost my weather app. And now can't find that one. If he can't fix I will take it to verizon next week.

The weather app was removed in the Jelly Bean update; there are several free ones in Google Play.

Have you tried doing a system cache clear? That helps a lot of the 'quirkiness' in system updates; it shouldn't remove any of your data. Droid Usrr outlined the steps a few posts above.

This was not just a change, this was and still is a problem with getting my email to load. I just cleaned the cash, still nothing. I don't now what else to do. Will have done look at it tonight and helpfull he can fix it for me.

I have a Droid Razr Maxx, installed latest update this morning and now am experiencing terrible wi-fi reception, sounds like I'm not alone! I have no control over wi-fi routers at work, so changing configuration there is impossible. I'm not convinced that this is a router problem anyway, my laptop did, and still does receive a strong signal. Before update wi-fi, and the phone in general worked great, now I can literally stand a few feet from the router and signal is dropped every few minutes. Hope someone can come up with a fix soon!

My Droid4 was messed up from the last O.S. update,contacts search would come up with no contact choices till you had almost spell the name,it was minor.this update messed up my alarms,also no alarm icon anymore all I have are six lame alarms now and one is the Rooster.Also it seems laggy now.Going to take it to a seance and see if I can find out whose ghost is possessing my Droid.Hopefully it wont be "The Hammer" from the movie 'Thirteen Ghosts".

I'm probably going to have get a new phone from the VZ store. I couldn't even power down, the battery ran out, and now I can't recharge or even get a response--and this is after popping the battery in and out a few times.

My daughter and I both have a Droid 4 and ever since we did the OS update, we're having all kinds of problems. My daughter's phone is worse than mine. The camera will not work, opening e-mail closes app, apps freeze, gallery photos will not display, phone will not power off, phone will not check for updates, battery life has been shortened tremendously, and many more problems. My phone reboots on its own (so far 6 times today) and I do not get notifications for e-mails, facebook, etc. My favorites contact bar lost photos that identify the contact and some of the data is scrambled since the update. PLEASE SOMEONE TELL US WHAT CAN BE DONE AND HOW SOON IT WILL BE FIXED. WHAT A FREAKIN' NIGHTMARE!

What is verizon doing to fix the Droid 4 jelly bean update -- it has totally messed up my phone Verizon needs to make this good -- replace my phone w/ the orginal version -- i cant use my phone -- no group text - no browser - battery life is only 2 hrs if lucky. can't connect to links. I can't believe a company would send out an update that is not tested and destroying many users and yet Verizon still wants that monthly payment. I use my phone for biz and biz contact now I am stuck. What are you doing Verizon? Sorry but I am very ticked at this uselss update.

they told me to call tech support 611 opt3 on your phone but don't call from your phone bc they may have to walk you thru something. it is a pain and it ticks me off bc we still have to keep paying for a phone that is NOT delivering the service it was promised on the contract. WHAT ARE YOU DOING VERIZON TO FIX THIS

My daughter took her phone in to Verizon yesterday. They said that it was a Motorola problem and they were the ones required to correct the problems caused by the update. I had backed up her contacts and pictures and they removed the SIM card and reset to factory settings. She lost all downloaded apps and her camera is still not working. Verizon was reluctant to do that but she insisted especially since she goes back to school next week and relies heavily on her cell phone. We were not happy with the attitude of the Verizon guy and I am going to contact Motorola today to see WHO REALLY IS TO BLAME. You would think that Verizon would help us push Motorola in pushing an update that corrects all these problems caused by their last update...especially since they market Motorola's product...

I am very upset they took away the Alarm and Timer and replaced it with Clock (which is Google clock) I complained to Motorola https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/chat/chat_launch/p/30,6720,8302 during a live chat session. I have a hard time waking up in the morning so I loved that I could pick a song from my mp3's that I knew would work. If a song is too abrupt I turn off the alarm without actually waking up and a song that is too soft doesn't even phase me. I always had a hard time using the bedside alarm radio's because I would turn them off not knowing it. The old alarm and timer was the best alarm clock I've ever had. Who in their right mind wants to wake up to a rooster ??? If I wanted to do that I would live on a farm. I know it sounds crazy that I would complain about an alarm clock but when you've had the problems I've had with waking up and getting to work on time you would understand. You have to stick with what works.

I wholeheartedly agree with you! I don’t want to wake up to some annoying alarm sound, I also want to be able to pick a song. And I also used the timer all the time on that app, now I have to use a different timer app. Why would you take functionality away? I don’t get it.

Sorry I haven't checked back. I spent almost 2 hours on phone with a very nice guy from Verizon tech support. After going through several steps, including a complete reset of phone, it was still doing all the things I complained about. Verizon sent me a new phone. (Droid RAZR). This one updated about 2 days after I got it and it is working fine... so far.

Verizon was totally aware of the slow problems with the new update. What they had me try to do for that was go to my apps in the system settings and select every app individually and clear the cache for each app. They said this seemed to be helping the slow problems.

glad you got something -- they told me to check w/ my insurance and i stated how would my insurance be responsible when it was verizons update -- calling android support and seeing if they can transfer me to corporate -- i asked for a new battery and they dont have one -- that seems an little wild -- carrys cell phone and they have no batteries and then i am to contact my insurance .. and yes GROUP Texting has been removed and all you Clock timer lovers -- no longer - been replaced. But my Battery life is the biggest issue since this upgraded jelly bean. Think no one really checked out this upgrade. Maybe an Iphone will be my next. $200 a month for a battery that last 3 hrs -- might as well go w/ a wall phone.

Telefiend, I'm sorry to hear that you've been having problems on your device since the software update. Let's get your device to perform properly and make you happy again! The software update may be conflicting with the software of applications that you have already downloaded to your device. I recommend that you delete any unwanted applications, text messaging threads, and call history. Once you have done this, power cycle your phone off/on. I trust that this will improve the performance of your phone. Keep us posted. We're here for you.

shipping but i guess the person at verison hq got the address wrong and

here it is a week later and still dont have a working phone,,i know the

person at the verizon store told them the right address and they also wrote

Hey JD1424. Software updates are put in place to keep the phone up to date and make sure the phone is running smoothly, but I am sorry to hear that this is causing you so many problems.

Sometimes some applications don't exactly agree with the software update, so if you are having issues with your phone after the software update, please try a hard reset, http://vz.to/tQ0nkT.

After you do that please update us on how the phone reacts.

I have an android 4 and after the update, which I continued to delay every 12 hours because I don't have time to wait for the thing to update in between being mom and work, has completely messed my phone up! I cannot get it to boot up past the "dual core technology" screen. This is really frustrating to say the least. I am happy I get to take time out of my day to drive to a store for "help". I have powered it down by holding the on/off button and the volume "down" button simultaneously, still not working. It would be lovely if I had a removable battery maybe I could of given that a shot. Nope the battery is "non-removable" and the phone doesn't even turn on.

Yes nikkeewikki -- I agree as if we have so much time to stand in line at a store and then there is no answer. I pay a monthly fee for a phone that was promised atleast 10 hrs of battery life -- since the upgrade 3 hours if I am lucky --

I am looking for an outlet everywhere I go - I might as well just have a landline phone cheaper. I asked for a new battery and VERIZON said they didn't have any extra -- Like really -- you sale Cell Phones W/ batteries. Then taking away Group text and have to download a new program for group text bc of my business - and that app uses battery life. Come on Verizon--- I think it is time to visit the Better Business Bureau webpage-- no A+ will be given

Any problems with the jelly bean update is a Motorola issue as they own the OS.

Apparently during the update, the SIM card went bad. After I went through all of the troubleshooting steps with Motorola, everything indicated a problem with the SIM card.

They told me to try to reformat the SIM card but it was not an option. I took it to a Verizon store to get them to reformat it and it could not be done.

They put a brand new SIM card in the phone and everything is working perfectly.

Note: personal ringtones, sounds, notifications, and pictures (camera & gallery) are stored on the SIM card. If the card is bad, you can’t take pictures, look at the gallery, set individual notifications for e-mail, calls, voice mail, messaging, etc.

I haven't heard of that happening. There are free software recovery packages that might could restore those photos. It's been a while since I've used one, so can't recommend any ... you might try a search on Google or this forum for specific software names.
