Switching device on prepaid plan

I read somewhere in the forums that prepaid customers must go to a Verizon store in order to get a new phone activated. Is this true, that the "Switch Device" feature in My Verizon doesn't work for prepaid accounts? I am not sure if my phone is acting up and it's time to get a new one, and am worried I might not be able to activate a replacement phone on my own...
