Having three nephews/nieces, I'm sure when the time comes for them to get phones, my brother/sister will be asking about the best options for monitoing and keeping the kiddos safe online. Happy to do the same with you, and give you some info on VZ Smart Family.
You cannot view the content of text messages nor access third party messaging apps. I'm going to share FAQ for Smart Family which will go over everything you can do via the 'Activity and Limits' section: https://www.verizon.com/support/verizon-smart-family-faqs/
In that section it confirms all the controls, settings, and items you can do via Smart Family. Additionally there's info about the service in general and the features of the Smart Family Companion app which can also be added to your kid's smartphone.
