Incoming calls not ringing, going straight to voicemail

I have been trying to determine why some incoming calls do not ring on my phone, but go straight to voicemail.  I've read quite a few posts from others who have the same problem.  I haven't seen any "recent" posts on this subject, so I'll take a chance at getting a solution.

1.  Calls intermittently go directly to voicemail without ringing my phone,

2.  The problem is intermittent; For example, my wife will call me, and her call will go right to voicemail.  She will hang up and try again.  After a number of retries, my phone will ring, and I can answer and speak to her.  I am not on the phone when this happens.  Volume is turned up.  Do Not Disturb is off.  Call forwarding is off.  If any of these settings were a factor, I would think that she would not be successful in getting through to me after making a number of calls to me right in a row ?

3.  This happens when our phones are on the 4G or 5G network as well as when we have Wi-Fi calling enabled.  We've tried all 4 combinations.  I have read other explanations for this problem that refer to poor signal strength as a cause.  Why would we still experience the problem when both of our phones are on Wi-Fi?

4.  Sometimes when my wife calls, she reports that she hears no ringback tone and her call goes immediately to voicemail.  Other times she reports that she hears a number of ringback tones (as if I am on my phone and ignoring her incoming call) and then the call goes to my voicemail.

5.  This has been going on for months.

6.  Texting goes right through.

Please help.  We've been frustrated with this for months, but just now had an urgent situation and she couldn't reach me.  Please do not suggest that I check "do not disturb off", "call forwarding off", "volume turned up"--it is none of these settings.

Thanks.

If one or both of you are using WiFi Calling, check that your internet router is not using IPv6, as Verizon still uses IPv4 for WiFi Calling and without doing some technical tweaking on your internet equipment, data packets will be dropped on IPv6, causing calls not to work.  Otherwise, if calls only intermittently get dropped while on cellular service, it's usually an issue of poor signal strength with one or both of the callers.  Occasionally, extreme network congestion and being deprioritized on the network (if you are prepaid or using a discount carrier) can cause call quality issues.

@Sparkythomp , is your Verizon internet the 4G or 5G Home Internet with the cube shaped internet gateway (runs off the cell phone towers), or is it Fios (fiber optic internet)?  Those are different technologies and would help with troubleshooting why your phone calls are being dropped.
