I've noticed when looking at the text message usage a lot of them just have a random 5 numbers instead of an actual phone number that it was sent from. Why?

Is there a way to see were the text came from?

A 5-6 digit number is often referred to as a Short Code. These numbers can be used by companies, contests, donations or other services. Verizon uses short codes for service and support messages, such as 899010.

https://www.textingworld.com/short-codes/usa  is a website that does Short Code lookups.  For some reason 899010 does not come up as being used.  It is filled with advertisements.
