About 15 months back I traded in my old phone for a "free" new phone. The requirement in the contract is: (copied) THIS DEVICE PAYMENT AGREEMENT REQUIRES THAT YOU MAINTAIN
SERVICE WITH VERIZON WIRELESS UNDER YOUR CUSTOMER AGREEMENT. Which is reasonable as they expect me to keep using Verizon for the next 3 years until it is paid off. Well, now we wanted to change the plan to a new slightly less expensive one. Once switched got a message from Verizon telling us that the trade in deal is off due to "because at least one of the eligibility criteria was not met".
In the original customer service communication and in the contract there was not a word about having to use the same package for the next 3 years, only had to stay with Verizon
