Upgrading to Unlimited Ultimate from Ultimate Plus removes device discount?

I am traveling overseas and was planning to upgrade to Unlimited Ultimate to take advantage of the inbuilt international rates in the latter. However, when trying to do this on the website or the app, I am told I will lose my device discounts if I upgrade my plan. Is this real?
Also, has anybody had problems doing this and then downgrading after returning from an international trip? Or is that playing with a VZW customer service disaster scenario?

You must've gotten a device on some type of contract where you are receiving a monthly credit until the cost of the device is entirely paid off? If so, the service plan you have is tied to the contract and can't be altered; otherwise it is considered breaking the contract (even if you are upgrading to a more expensive service plan) and your credits will stop. And you might get hit with a bill for the remaining cost of the device after the fact.
I have heard of the switching around between plans so as to use Unlimited Ultimate for what's essentially built in Travel Pass service and then going back to something else when you get home, but it's either people using a bring your own device (BYOD) or else they are financing their device independent of Verizon.
I'm not a Verizon employee, just another customer trying to help.

Thanks. I guess I will play it safe and just buy the international roaming.

Hi branonx! You have a valid concern and don't blame you for being cautious. Promos can definately provide great discounts and don't want to lose. I wanted to offer assistance where we can also check out a plan change to confirm yes or no impact to promotions. We can provide a quote to make sure you have the services, both domestic and internationally at the best value to meet needs. Please reply to the following private message if you would like a review.

Customer Service spent an hour with me on the phone following the message above, ensuring that I would not lose the device promotion if I upgraded to Ultimate Ulitmate. Unfortunately, today (Feb 19th) , I received a new bill with my promotion removed because I was no longer on the original plan. I am having serious doubts about the competence of Verizon Customer Service.

How did this work out? Iโve found the reps will tell you almost anything and cannot be trusted. I was going to do this but itโs too risky. It could take months to straighten it out if they mess it up.

What plan weโre going to upgrade from? My understanding (and will confirm before upgrading for a month of travel) is that you can upgrade from another ultimate plan (unlimited plus, in my case) and lose the device discounts

We just recently upgraded my wife's plan to Ultimate Unlimited. We did the upgrade primarily for the international data service feature. We just got back from a three-week international trip to four countries. The service worked quite well in most places. We even hotspotted her phone so I could connect (with my cellular data turned off). Even with both of us using her data allotment we didn't hit the low data threshold.
I've found the key to working with Verizon is getting a knowledgeable representative, which is about one in four. If the one I'm chatting with or talking to isn't knowledgeable then I politely end our conversation and then connect with another.
