Switching to parents family plan from individual plan

Hi everyone.

I'm looking at the possibility of going back on my parents' family plan once my contract is up at the end of September. I was also going to get a new phone at that time. My main question is can I keep my same phone number, or will I have to get a new phone number? Part of the reason I'm asking is because I have a $50 gift card that I can get at Best Buy if I get my new phone from them, but I'm not sure I can do that, since I'm ending my contract, and my parents are adding a line on theirs. If I have to get a new number, then that's fine. It's just cheaper in the long run if I go back on my parents' family plan.

I was on it awhile ago before I had my smartphone, but then once I got my smartphone, figured I would go on my own plan. This was before smartphone became as popular as they are now, so I'm not sure if my parents would have paid for my smartphone. Now since their more popular, I'm thinking about saving money and going back on their plan. Any input you have would be appreciated. Thank you!

You have great and quite important questions, I'm happy to help. Since your contract will hav ended when you move to your parents' account, you can certainly get a new phone and take your number with you. The process is called an Assumption of Liability (AOL); you'll find more information here http://vz.to/1ocmabw.

Thanks. This is very helpful. Do I have to do this at a Verizon Wireless store, or can I do this at Best Buy? The reason I ask, is because I reserved a $50 Best Buy gift card for when I do get a new phone with the same number.

Do it at a corporate Verizon Wireless store.

You can also do this on the phone. First make the "owner" of your parents account an account manager on your account, then have them call and do the AOL of your line on to their account. You can do this before your contract expires. I'd wait until after the AOL to get a new phone. The warranty(through Verizon) may be voided if you upgrade first, then do the AOL.

Thanks, lewisr13. Yes, my plan was to move to my parents' plan, on or after September 27, then get an upgrade on my phone, most likely the iPhone 6 (not the 6 plus), even though I'll most likely have to pre-order it.
