Important Changes to Email POP/SMTP

Just got two e-mails saying POP and SMTP settings need to be changed to pop.verizon.net and smtp.verizon.net.

I'm paranoid so I looked under "Check Verizon Announcements" in My Verizon and there's nothing there about this.

Scam or legit?

Thanks!

I made this update on my iPod, and now when I go to check my e-mail, I get the following message: "Cannot Get Mail The mail server "pop.verizon.net" is not responding.  Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings."

I was able to check my mail earlier today with no problem (before making the change).  The only settings I changed were "pop.verizon.net" in place of "incoming.verizon.net" and "smtp.verizon.net" in place of "outgoing.verizon.net"

Please advise.  Thank you.

Obviously there are a lot of people confused, upset or hesitant about impementing this change; and, for a lot of people it isn't working. For this kind of change, Verizon should send out an email announcing a change and direct its customers to log into their MyVerizon account to view the details. That would eliminate the fear that it might be a malicious email. Also, with a lot of people having trouble with the change, Verizon should do more testing (assuming they did any testing) and delay the change if necessary.

I do not have an iPod (or any i.... anything Smiley Very Happy ) so I cannot give you any specifics, but there are three changes needed on all devices using an email client, as described in the email and the notice on the webiste:

1) Change the server names

2) Change the ports

3) Change the SSL settings

It will not work if you do not do all three.

I too received the email to change the email settings.  Good Doo-bee that I am,  I did so.  And the changes need to be done on ALL email programs including Apple.  Eventually if the settings are not changed, your program will not work.

Now the Apple email program no longer can send emails out.  After 2 hours of trying, I phoned Verizon.  The agent was very nice, did everything he could, looked up all he could, outsourced to another.  Still cannot send emails.  Conclusion: it's a problem with Apple software.  Contact Apple.  I explained that I don't buy that excuse since it only happened after I made the changes.  Still the agent insist, it's a software problem with Apple.  The end.  So now, in order to send email, I must go on line to the web-based email.  And we all know what a joy - NOT - that program is to work with.

I have an iPhone with AT&T phone service but my email service is my home verizon.net.....service.  I got the notice yesterday to change the server incoming and outgoing name and ports and SSL to ON... "on select mobile devices"..   This is maybe my problem. I made the changes and now have zero email on my iPhone.  My settings were already changed on my home email account which I have forgotten that I even did that and when..     The iPhone may not be one of the select mobile devices... anyone know the answer to that?

Hi All-

I'm sorry for all your frustrations!  I can assure you that the email notification is legit. The emails started to be sent out on 1/29 (same date as the announcement Justin linked to), and they continue to be sent out in the near future.

I've reached out to the email team about some of the concerns raised here. They stated that in many cases, you'll need to completely shut down and restart your device for the changes to take effect.  Please let me know if that still doesn't work and I'll get in touch with the proper team.

Thanks,

Heather

It worked for me on my PC, iPhone, iPad, and iMac. Make sure you have ALL the settings, SSL, authentication, etc.

Heather -

I would like to request your involvement in getting through to the Support organization on this subject.  I have successfully used the new settings for some time with most of my mail applications but those supported by .NET fail on the SMTP side.  I think it is fairly well known that .NET does not support Implicit SSL (only Explicit SSL).

I'm looking for a response from Support as to how they intend to provide connectivity for the .NET (System.Net. Mail) applications.

Any help in getting their attention will be appreciated.

I received the infamous email Thursday, March 21st.  I successfully updated the settings for several of my verizon.net email addresses in Microsoft Outlook on my PC.

The email stated ...or via hand held devices.  I therefore attempted to update the settings on my Droid RAZR MAXX mobile phone.  The new Incoming settings were accepted.  However, the Outgoing settings were not.  I spent about 45 minutes with Verizon Wireless Level 2 Tech Support trying to resolve the issue.

The original Outgoing settings were SMTP server outgoing.verizon.net, Security type None, Port 587.

I attempted to change those settings to SMTP server smtp.verizon.net, Security type SSL, Port 465.  I received the message Couldn't finish.  Authentication not supported.

I then changed the Security type to None.  That automatically changed the Port to 587.  I received the message Couldn't finish. Can't connect to server.

I then changed the SMTP server back to outgoing.verizon.net, Security type to SSL and the Port to 465.

That was accepted.  I sent and received emails with those settings even though they were contrary to the Verizon email instructions.

Level 2 Tech support suggested that I leave the settings that way until or unless I no longer am able to send or receive emails on my cellphone.

Verizon had better get their act together, since the the landline and wireless divisions don't seem to be communicating with each other.

Like everybody else, I got the notice.

I changed my Mac Mail program settings and found the following:

1) With Mac Mail diagnostics, it says I can connect and authenticate to both pop and smtp using ssl.

2) I can send emails out through smtp.

3) Even though I can connect, pop never gives me any messages - even when I know there are some to get.  I switch back to incoming, and the messages come down fine.

From this thread, it still doesn't sound like a good idea to change, as things aren't really working yet.

Greetings, all,

I just got the e-mail today, and my first attempt at making the indicated changes also resulted in a no go when receiving incoming mail and sending outgoing mail. (I'm using Postbox as my mail app, which is a Thunderbird clone.) I finally figured out how to make it work.

For those using Thunderbird or one of its clones, you might want to try what I ended up doing:

1)  Even though I changed the servers to pop.verizon.net and smtp.verizon.net within the program's account settings interface, I couldn't receive or send mail until I also manually edited settings in the prefs.js and mailsessionstore.js files (in the program's profile folder) to change all occurrences of "incoming.verizon.net" to "pop.verizon.net" (there were several such entries) and "outgoing.verizon.net" to "smtp.verizon.net".  After doing this, the program requested my password for both of the new servers, and retained those between sessions.  I then went into the program's "saved passwords" setting, and there were 4 entries, two for the old servers and two for the new ones.  I simply deleted the passwords for the old servers, and everything has worked since.

2)  Even with these changes, I was not able to connect to the servers unless both servers' authentication settings are set to "password" rather than "encrypted password" (the "connection security" settings found there must be set to "SSL/TLS").  These are found in the account settings.

Even though it's working now after this unnecessarily complicated process, it's a shame that this has turned into this confusing mess.  I hope my experience will help those of you who use a Thunderbird-based mail client, and for others at least points you in a direction that ultimately gets you fixed up.

Good luck and best wishes!
