cannot connect safely to server

My Samsung Galaxy Avant is not loading new emails; "cannot connect safely to server" is shown after any attempts to change settings. Emails are coming in at AOL and MacMail on home computer but not on the phone.  Outgoing mail is working however.  Using the Android email that comes with the phone. Never had a problem until this week.

Any suggestions?

Same here.  My Samsung S5 email stopped fetching emails two days ago.  It can send emails but it cannot connect to the POP server.  My windows PC Thunderbird client works fine with the same settings.  I get the "cannot connect safely..." message when I try to configure the pop server with SSL.  When I change it to "SSL (accept all certificates)"  it spins for 5 minutes and times out with an error.

I am also having this issue.  I've tried removing/adding, clearing out space, checked all the settings.  Just spent over an hour on chat with Verizon support and they didn't have an answer.  I'm hoping someone figures this out.  Also started on 2/22.  They must have done something!

I'm not sure Verizon did anything other than buy AOL, shift Verizon email under AOL management and washed their hands of the problem.

AOL is now tidying up and some folks have lost the ability to use their email clients.

As I remember it, many years ago Japan decided their were too many alphabets and dialects.  They defined that henceforth the alphabet would be thus and so  ---  and some folks wound up unable to spell their names

I have exactly the same problem.  Nothing I've tried seems to help.  My desktop, running Linux Mint Thunderbird, works fine, and outgoing email on the S5 works fine, but nothing comes into the phone.

I gave up on Samsung's email application and used Gmail app and set up my Verizon mail accounts . Work fine. I called Samsung and they said to do that and check aol settings .I have given up on aol and verizon

JohnZ has described my situation pretty closely.

I saw elsewhere that some people had success by using a manual configuration option to set both the pop (incoming) and smtp (outgoing) settings to use an aol.com server name, but my GMail client on my Android phone does not offer that option.  If you put your email address as MyUserName@verizon.net, it automatically sets the server name to something.verizon.net.

Same here! My Galaxy S6 just stopped receiving mail. I ended up deleting the account to try to set it up new, but keep getting this same message, Cannot Connect Safely to Server. What the ____, Verizon?

My Samsung Galaxy S6 just stopped receiving incoming mail for no apparent reason. I tried over and over again to set up the incoming POP3 server mail settings and kept getting a message "cannot safely connect to server." I finally solved the problem when I used AOL's settings for POP3 email via third party email apps, i.e., incoming POP3 server = pop.aol.com; SSL required, port = 995. AND VERY IMPORTANTLY: user name sent to incoming POP3 server must be your full verizon.net email address---your phone will NOT log in to aol.com incoming server unless using your name@verizon.net full user name, this is the same as if you were logging into aol.com email on their website. And I found the ONLY way I could change the user name shown on the incoming server settings page (it was grayed out) was to delete my email account on my phone and start anew, and use MANUAL setup. But after setting it up (including using AOL's outgoing mail server = smtp.aol.com; SSL required, port = 465), my good ol' email icon on my phone works again! I had downloaded the AOL mobile phone app, resigned to getting email through their app, but now don't have to, uninstalled that, and can keep using my familiar email application. Hope this helps someone.

Thank you!  Deleting the entire account before changing the settings did the trick.  That was frustrating!!

Thanks for this.  These instructions worked for me. I had to set up manually and change the outgoing port as well.

You are 100% on the money!  I did not realize I was not getting email to my phone for the past 5 days!   THANK YOU for posting the information.

I would have spent 60+ minutes waiting for a tech rep who may or may not have been able to help me.

Thanks for this advice. I plan to try this this evening. Question: I can still send email from my phone so I assume you didn't bother to change the outgoing pop servers to the aol.com settings. Yes?  Never mind about the question. I believe you said you did change the outgoing settings also which would make sense for the user name, etc. to match. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for posting this!  I had the exact same problem starting on 22 February.  It's incredible that AOL would make this change without notifying its customers.

These exact instructions worked perfectly.  I had to go back and enter my Verizon email address twice. Once was the user name.
