verizon smtp no longer allowing custom domains

So, I run a small home based business. Have had my own domain for 25 years. Use fios as IP and mac mail running through smtp.verizon.net. There is no other way to set this up. Today they have block all mail that is not from a verizon.net email account. No work around, no support, with 2 weeks notice a total cut off. This has to affect a lot of people. Am I missing something? I have lost the ability to send email unless it comes from a generic @verizon.net address. Is there a way to spoof the addrss so it still looks like my domain? I have 30 something email addresses on my domain. Do they all now have to be rebuilt on verizons servers?

I just ran into this and it is totally UNACCEPTABLE, Verizon.

I also run my own business and I have avoided broadcasting my verizon email address for years. Although the other poster mentioned a 20 day notice, I did not receive any notice at all. I did not know this was coming and am now dead in the water with my business email address.

Well we do have cell phones coming off their plans and maybe it is time to ditch Verizon if this is the way they treat their loyal customers.

I mean, come on now, we have been routing through Verizon to send. Why can't we use our business names???

I never received any notification either. Last night at 12:30am I was able to send mail and this morning at 7:30am, I was no longer able to. Really frustrating and I agree - totally UNACCEPTABLE.

Turns out, Verizon *does* still let you use your custom domain. You just can use the SMTP of the ISP where you are hosting the domain.

Now, previously, Verizon made you send using Verizon's smtp, and we were jumping through hoops to use a relay personality of Verizon and send using Verizon's smtp.

Well, apparently now you can go back to using your other smtp. It is working for me.

I checked my messages and do not appear to have received any message about this.

So no, not setting up a custom smtp here today. Whew!

To add insult to injury, they are blocking the ability for me to reply to other subscribers who are responding to the original post. This is a very bad customer service move. It took me 20 minutes on the phone to get me to someone who actually understood the issue and pretty much said that this is the new policy and there is nothing that we (the customer) can do about it. I was an early FIOS customer and have all of my home and phone services with Verizon. I will be shopping for a new provider today. Bad Move, Verizon!!!!!

I am submitting another post about this issue because it is a major degredation of FiOS service and it needs urgent attention by Verizon.

I host my own domain and email server over my FiOS internet line, and I never check my verizon.net account because I don't want it. All I want is basic SMTP service that I can connect to and send messages from my own server. Suddenly, SMTP stopped working. This is not acceptable because I spent weeks setting up and configuring my email server, and I have a ton of email stored on it. Now I am left without a way to respond to incoming email. All I got was an email notification in my verizon.net accout which I never use or check:

"Maintaining the security and integrity of your information is important to us. Effective November 15, 2016, for enhanced security and phishing protection, we are eliminating the ability to use non-local “from” addresses in conjunction with your verizon.net email account. "

I don't believe a word of what is said in that email. I've never had any security issues with email, and I do not want Veriszon's "enhanced security". All I want is for Verizon to allow this 40-year old technology called email to continue to work properly.

I want to host my email on my own internet line, not anywehre else because that does not ensure the security and privacy standards that I enforce, which appear to be much higher than Verizon's. This is exactly why this stuff needs to be regulated by the FCC. If this issue is not resolved promptly I'm going to have to look at other options for internet.

This is a bad move by Verizon. When I spoke to a customer service rep, she said that I was the third call regarding this. I can't believe that this isn't a major issue for many customers. They keep locking the threads, so we have to keep opening new ones. Good luck.

Suddenly my custom domain-based email account cannot be used to send emails. I can receive emails to that custom domain-based email address through Verizon Fios but cnanot send. I have an Exchange account at work and can send fine using that Exchange server. If Verizin recnetly (like today) changed the use of custom domain email addresses, that means I have to use my clunky verizon email. Bogus!

I also am furious about suddenly being denied outgoing email service, starting just today, because apparently Verizon no longer supports custom domain based non-Verizon email addresses. I have been using a custom domain based email to better brand my business instead of using stupid verizon1234@verizon.net. To suddenly not be able to is criminal. I have been running the same configuration for 10 years and as far as I can see I got 0 days of notification about this change, no email and no postal mail. And worse, I spent a hour online with tech support before they finally asked someone what was going on. I started using a custom domain for email when I changed from Charter to Verizon, so that if I had to change providers again my email address would not change. Maybe it is time to make a provider change.

I too, realized just today that this happened. I've been sending email using my own domains through verizon's SMTP relay for years.

However, as an IT person, I was surprised when they allowed this. I took advantage of it, but I was actually very surprised it worked.

I have both a business and a residential Internet connection, with a static IP for the business. So I can easily get around this, but I'd rather not. My hosting account with Godaddy will allow me to send directly to them, but I'd still rather use Verizon's smtp gateway.

No help from Verizon on this matter?

Yup I have perhaps 20 email accounts that are active and the only way to handle this is to use an email client -- and the relay technology is what makes this practical.

I also have been doing this for MANY years. If verizon had an issue with a specific user they could have handled it directly rather than breaking their email system. I can not image anyone actually using a verizon email address. We probably would not hire someone if their return address was verizon.net!

It is the method used to s/r mail on an ipad that has no filter support for spam.

"Foreign" addresses in From field not permitted as of today - with no backup info available

"Foreign" means an address that is not sender@verizon.net

I discovered this in the morning of 11-16-2016 when I sent e-mails from my desktop computer using the Pegasus mail client using an e-mail address like myname@mydomain.com; myname@verizon.net works just fine.

Also no problem for those who use web mail.

For me this a major pain in the neck, not to mention Verizon turning the switch with no warning to its customers, and no details available available.

I can't believe I am the only one to whom this matters. Let me hear from you if it affects you.

I'm filing a complaint with the FCC. This is rediculous. If they want to make it a manual opt-in to prevent spam, fine. But arbitrary and capricious changes to the service that impede legitimate use is something the FCC cares about. If VZ can identify spam, then because they are making us go through an authenticated port on smtp.verizon.com then they should know *who* is doing it, and should deal with those customers individually. Instead they are crippling the service they are supposed to be providing, to the detriment of all customers.

I have this nightmare as well. NO notice reached me prior to the shutoff. I have used this for years without problem and it took several hours to figure out. My evening is destroyed and now I have an urgent problem to cope with tomorrow. Absolutely furious at Verizon!!!!

Forum readers, if this bothers you and since the techs are saying it was a corporate decision, you may wish to file a complaint with the FCC, which just takes 90 seconds via their web form: https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us

The four reasons that I complained were (1) reduction in our email service capabilities without a reduction in price; (2) failure to give adequate notice since apparently many of us were surprised and our lives disrupted; (3) loss of net neutrality, since Verizon will no longer allow third-party domain names through its outgoing email servers and that is simply a type of data; and (4) anti-competitive / restraint of trade because Verizon is forcing customers to adopt a verizon.net domain for email usage, which makes it more difficult to switch Internet Service Providers.

Although I have been a satisfied Verizon customer (and shareholder) this particular decision is a bad one, and by applying pressure via regulators, we can hope that they will change.

Thanks benerus. I have filed a complaint with the FCC against Verizon. Not only did Verizon cause a massive service interruption by this change, but Verizon has also put its customers at a huge privacy and security risk because now we have to scramble to find an external SMTP service provider and give them access to all of our outgoing emails, instead of using the internet provider's SMTP server. These are the kind of corporate decisions that will make Veriozon and its likes extinct. It's very common for people to run SSH, web, and mail servers in their homes and some Apps even rely on that. Security should not be an execuse for blocking access. Disabling functionality is not the proper way to enhance security.

Couldn't agree more that this is totally unacceptable. I've used a personal business domain for 15 years without any problems and now, without any notice, it is taken away. Total waste of one day so far, and I still don't have a solution. This is no way to treat customers. If I can't resolve it soon, Verizon will lose my internet, tv, and cell phone business. Ridiculous!

I went to the private message site, following the directions the best I could, and the reply I found was just stated the obvious, namely that Verizon will not longer allow custom domain names in the FROM field.

Same boat here. Been checking blacklists, refreshing DHCP IP, about ready to redo my SMTP configuration completely....and on my "relay" account I find a notice about this being turned off. Thanks Verizon! Time to start looking at what Comcast has for their package deal.

The best part about this is that the notification that they were going to do this didn't go to the forwarding address you set up for your account. Somehow Verizon's marketing emails make it to the forwarding address, so you might assume that the forwarding is working, but when they have a service announcement it just sits in the verizon email account that you thought you didn't have to check.

Update- Good news, I hope. I still use a Windows 7 machine with Outlook 2010. After the change yesterday, I could no longer send through non-V* domain accounts. A while back, V* did a similar abrupt change, forcing us to change the SMTP config of the non-V* accounts to use the V* account.

However, as of the 11/15/16 change, i could no longer send from these accounts, nor could I change the config. Outlook 2010 would just freeze when I tried to change them. It occurred to me that something had been corrupted, so I tried deleting the e-mail accounts in Outlook, then I added them back in as "new" accounts, though I used the same old PST file.

The difference this time was I changed the SMTP host from V* to my third-party provider. Outlook still hung, so I killed the session with Task Mgr, relaunched the Win 32 bit mail admin, and verified the new accounts were there with the correct config.

I then launched the Outlook client and was able to send a test mail from the "new" third-party account. I hope this stays, but who knows...

What in the world are you thinking shutting this down? As with others, no notice that I saw in my case either. I've spent the better part of the day trying to figure out why my fulfillment system no longer could send order confirmations to my customers and then more time on the phone with your agents who had no clue.

No, it very likely does not affect the majority of your customers but for those of us who do rely on sending mail through SMTP using non-Verizon addresses for a variety of reasons it is a critical requirement. I cannot contact my customers via email sent from some random Verizon email address. That's a ridiculous expectation. Even more so when I'm sending out through my own **bleep** ISP. I can understand that you may not want outsiders bouncing through your relays but you know the origin of the traffic in this case.

Seriously, this is one of the most boneheaded things that I've ever seen a provider do. Other than the FCC and alternative providers to move our business, who do we contact at Verizon regarding this? The person who made the decision should be walked out of the building immediately. This is rookie stuff. I'm not sure that it really even serves any purpose on your end. All anyone would need to do to defeat it would be to tag a verizon.net on the end. Someone abusing it won't care that nobody can get back to them. We do but not via a Verizon email address!

Same issue for me. I have multiple domains, some without SMTP servers. This is absolutely appalling. I received no notice and had to debug the issue. Email addresses I have been using for years no longer can send email.

The kicker for me is I signed up for another 2 years with Verizon a month ago, had I known this was about to happen I would have definitely shopped around.

I am curious if I am still bound to the contract if the service was degraded without notice.

Re: contract renewal: I am not a lawyer, but it is obvious that they unilaterially changed the terms of service, and you should win if you fought against any early termination fees.

Verizon should either open outgoing port 25, or allow access to their SMTP server with custom domain in From address. Is it ridiculous to have both blocked, because that completely disables Email, which is like the most basic use case for the internet. There must be a monetary motive behind this move, but I don't understand what it is. It certainly has nothing to do with the "security enhancement" lie that Verizon is telling.

Yes, a third party SMTP could be a workaround, but it is not acceptable for Verizon to expect its customers to use a third part SMTP service. That has serious security and privacy implications because it requires giving a third party full access to outgoing emails. Verizon is putting its customers at a huge risk by this stupid decision.

Effective, November 15, 2016, the ability to change the "From" address or the ability to use a non-local "From" address on outgoing email has been removed. This feature allowed customers to change the @Verizon.net SENT email address to something different. Example: gina@somecompany.com instead of gina@verizon.net.

ISTR, they've flip-flopped, i.e., a while back I had to configure my Outlook clients for each e-mail account to use the V* SMTP, but after 11/15/16, I had to switch back to my mail host's SMTP. Once that was done, I could send from those accounts.

On my Win 10 machines, it was a simple change, just edit the SMTP entry, adjust the account info, and adjust the STMP port per third-party host settings.

On my Win 7 machine with Outlook 2010, it was a bit of a struggle. I had to actually remove each account, then add them back-in manually, so I could reuse the old .PST file. However, once all the config had been done, Outlook 2010 appeared to freeze. I used Task Mgr to kill the session, then relaunched, and thankfully, the changes had stuck. My test e-mails were sent successfully.

I've been using FIOS for 10 years and just signed a 2 year contract, and I am hoping that your change will allow me to get out of it now. This is the only reason I even used your service. Please return access to all of us so that we can use the outgoing smtp server with our domain names.

PS: Even your tech support thinks this was a crap move. They said they spent hours with customers on Tuesday trying to figure this out because they didn't even know it happened. VERY poor service.

I've been troubleshooting for a few hours until I stumbled across these posts. Very frustrating, does anyone know if this action is grounds to get out of my 2 year contract?

I am having the same issues --2 things--I have webhosting (and have had my business there for many years >15) for a web presence and a POP3 e-mail system with the company name ABCD.com. I got the outgoing mail to work by using their SMTP and also using VPN - piping it directly to them to send messages--incoming is fine. However the issues still remaining are:

1. You need a VPN package --- decent ones are a few $, but if you travel domestically or international on business it is a good policy to use it as a level of security anyway.

2. VPN will prevent your office printers, unless connected into the computer directly (USB port) from working until you disconnect. I am going to write a script to connect VPN periodically if my mail is open and send outgoing say every x hours and then disconnect so the printers will work.

3. So far so good--I also have Verizon cell phones for myself and employees--TROUBLE - their mail no longer works--no VPN on the cell. We are dropping this service next week--have had it for many years. Suggest if you have Verizon cell to check mail and (most likely) drop the service.

4. I spoke to some folks at the AI human to machine interface conference prep going on in Munich Germany last night. They suggested after reserching it to file a compalint with the FCC as this is a violation (in their opinion) of the Net Neutrality laws --Verizon is simply trying to increase business with this practice. The more filings the better --there are forms on line.

I just wasted two hours trying to fix my outgoing email problem when I finally hit upon the right words in google to find this forum. I have had this setup for over 11 years since I never could get the outgoing SMTP to work with my email provider. Guess I'll have to finally figure it out or keep my temporary setup in Thunderbird using the "reply to" with my real email address and the from showing the Verizon email that I never use.

Time to start checking out providers. Lousy customer service.

That document stating 'reply to' can be anything, is a lie.

That is the problem we are experiencing.

Up until about 2 weeks ago, I could use smtp.verizon.net to send emails from my work address (mail.nih.gov). Then, that stopped working and only could send emails with my verizon.net address This is the case with my cell phone and from my Apple mail application. I use POP accounts. Work IT has said that is appears to be happening at Verizon's end. Any suggestions. It is a hassle to connect by VPN everytine I want to answer a work email.

Just stumbled onto this thread. Have been struggling with intermittent SMTP issues for several weeks, and completely stumped. Has anyone found a workaround? I can't believe Verizon would do this. I've been a loyal FIOS customer since they first introduced the service - I was one of the first customers in the state. But this is completely unacceptable. Many of us use a different domain for email.

In general you can use reply to as a different valid email address.

People with Business account should be able to negotiate something with Verizon.

This still isn't fixed. It's as if Verizon wants to lose its customers. This needs to be fixed immediately.

Except for those who have business accounts and include that in their service, it makes perfect sense for them to not allow custom domains.

This is still broken Verizon. I have been unable to send email for MONTHS because of this screw up. Still waiting on you to return our service. This has been a huge inconvenience. Worst customer service ever, a fact of which everyone is already well aware. Just thought it warrants repeating in this situation.

The From address has to be @verizon.net

However the return/reply address does not have to be that.

End of story - Sort of solved.
