I went into the store as well and wasn't able to purchase AppleCare+. I tried calling AppleCare but after 45 minutes waiting to talk to someone, I had to go take care of other things. I'll try to call them today to see if I can talk to someone.
I'm going to. After spending 1 1/2 hrs on the phone with Apple yesterday, they gave me a case number and asked me to call back. Their servers were overloaded.
Yes, I am too but the last two times I tried calling their servers were still down. So the nice guy on the phone gave me a case number so the next person will know whats going on.
But FYI you cannot go into the store and purchase it as everyone originally thought.
I called a couple of hours ago and bought it just fine!
I went into the apple store yesterday right after I recieved my phone and they said I could not add it. But I was on live chat yesterday with apple and they said we have to call them to add it.

I just wanted to take a moment to clarify your concerns regarding the purchase of the AppleCare+ protection plan for your new device.
The AppleCare+ Protection Plan must be included with your iPhone 4S order to ensure the device is protected through the AppleCare+ Protection Plan. AppleCare+ is currently not available through VZW. Any VZW customer who purchased a iPhone 4 (8GB) or iPhone 4S device through 11/14/2011 can purchase an AppleCare+ Protection Plan directly from Apple via this exclusive toll free number: (800) 275-2273.
After 11/14/2011, orders for AppleCare+ can only be placed together with the iPhone 4 (8GB) or iPhone 4S order. Verizon Wireless will not sell AppleCare+ to any customer with a Florida address. This includes Direct Fulfillment orders with a Florida Ship To address. These customers will need to contact Apple to purchase. This was very helpful. I called the number in the above post and waited about 15 minutes before a representative answered. Within five minutes the transaction was done and I was signed up for Applecare+. No questions of service provider or phone condition were asked, apparently the serial number is all the information they need, other than the billing address for the credit card. For those unfortunate souls who may have broken their phones since last Friday, this may be your mulligan.
But truly it was painless, and for those who may still be in doubt about this, you absolutely cannot sign up for this in the Apple retail store. It's only through the corporate phone line mentioned above. The grand total was $99, no sales tax charged.
