Shouldn't be any fees, aside from a $30 upgrade fee, though this is assuming you don't have anything remaining on a device payment plan that would need to be paid off.

As has been stated, there are no fees to upgrade other than the $30 upgrade fee.
HOWEVER, if you have a PRIOR agreement to make monthly payments on a device you previously purchased, you MUST complete those payments over time or in 1 lump sum before Verizon would allow you to enter into another agreement to purchase a phone by making monthly payments. If you simply want to upgrade by paying for a phone up front and in full, you can do so at any time.
If purchasing an iPhone, you may want to look into getting an unlocked version directly from Apple. That way you would not have to pay the $30 upgrade fee. You only pay that $30 upgrade fee when you purchase an iPhone from Verizon OR purchase the Verizon version from Apple. If you purchase the unlocked version directly from Apple, the only difference is that it will not come with a SIM card. Simply take the SIM card out of your current iPhone and place it into your new iPhone in order to activate it.
