Outlook "Your POP3 server is providing inconsistent information"

My mail server for Outlook 2010 was ported over from Verizon to AOL years ago without a problem. Now, suddenly, I can no longer receive my emails. I get the error message: "Task '[email address removed per the Verizon Terms of Service] - Receiving' reported error (0x80042110) : 'Your POP3 server is providing inconsistent information. The number of messages returned by the STAT command does not match the number of items returned by the UIDL or LIST commands. Contact your POP3 or Internet service provider.'"

AOL is no help. They say remove and re-add you account. It does not work. Microsoft is no help. Microsoft says to update your emails settings . . . to what? Using the same settings yields the same problem. Does anyone know what to do? (I am getting email on my iPhone but not my computer.)

Outlook 2010 is old and out of support from Microsoft. It's possible something has changed on AOL's email servers that it can't support. Can you try with a supported email client? If you don't want to pay to upgrade to Outlook 365, you could try an open-source email client like Thunderbird.

This is an AOL problem. Verizon.net emails stopped downloading to Outlook 2013 on computer and Android app on phone 5 days ago. Reset generated "app password " on both devices. Error 0x80042110 like original poster on Outlook. Now must use Aol website via browser to access emails. Aol "help"refuses to acknowledge problem.

Your suggestion sounds correct, but how did you generate a new app password? I am hoping you found a way. Microsoft says to go to their Security basics page, select "more security options," which does not exist, and under "App passwords," which isn't there, select "create a new app password," which cannot be done. You can change your Microsoft password, but that is not the same thing.

My apologies. I wasn't clear. The AOL app password (generated on AOL site) did not work. Because both my android phone app and Outlook 2013 stopped downloading emails at the same time the logical conclusion is that the AOL Verizon.net server is at fault. I spent (wasted) some time on the phone with AOL free support last week. The agent wanted me to agree to pay for a yearly AOL subscription before she would escalate this to a higher level of support but refused to even acknowledge the problem. I'm afraid that the hedge fund (Apollo) that purchased AOL and Yahoo is uninterested in supporting our legacy Verizon.net email accounts.

I will keep searching for a solution and in the meantime use the ad laden aol website to retrieve my mail. Oddly enough (or not) I can still send out on outlook but as to receiving I get the 0x80042110 error.

I you get yours to work please post back here. I will do likewise.
